    Outbreak Survivor Miniatures

Love the Rabbi... And the farmgirl.
  2. So, I got all of these as part of my recent order from Reaper. It arrived yesterday, and I started these this afternoon. It took me around two hours to paint them all. First off, the medium fire elemental: I cut off the wings because I want her to represent a character in my D&D campaigns, the half-fire elemental wanderer Riishaad. Riishaad is an ex-soldier, often found in the company of her old SIC, Thomaj, and her protege, the young sniper Virill. She roams the land restlessly, avoiding as best she can her inevitable visits to Tenebris Citadel, the home of her old commander and beloved lord Arram, who she is desperately in love with despite the fact that Arram cannot return that love. She serves as the second Avatar of the Phoenix, the counterpoint and balance to Arram, who is the Avatar of the Kirin - they are irrevocably shackled together, and it cuts her deeply since her predecessor, Liliander, is the man Arram loved most in the world, and the reason Arram can never love her. Second, one of her companions, the fire elemental and erstwhile wolf Arryuna: Arryuna and her mate Urruk were birthed as fire elementals without form, thoughtless creatures of heat and light with no sentience - and, indeed, no need for it. They were pulled from the Plane of Elemental Fire by the Avatar of the Phoenix, Liliander, as gifts and guardians to the half-elemental child he and his beloved Arram had taken in - given genius and thought and elevated above all other common creatures of flame as his direct servitors. When Riishaad bears a human form, they take the guise of hulking grey wolves - identical in every way except that Arryuna has blue eyes and Urruk grey. Third, the Burning Spheres: In addition to Arryuna and Urruk, Riishaad can call her own attendants - tiny fire drakes. The creatures are intelligent, and have a rudimentary hive mind - they can speak to each other, Riishaad, and the Wolves without issue over many miles, and Riishaad can cast spells on and through them as advanced familiars. Unlike Arryuna and Urruk, however, they are very weak, and can be persuaded to serve another if they somehow fall outside Riishaad's influence as long as it's not directly against her. I have another Large Fire Elemental for Urruk that I'm hoping to get together in the next day or two, and they I'll be basing them - just a simple mix of gravel and tea that I'm going to paint like coal and ash. I'm also going to do Riishaad's human adventuring party: Riishaad's human form, who's going to be Nalani, Dancing Girl, Virill and Thomaj, who I'm undecided on, and Arryuna and Urruk, who are going to be a pair of Wargs. All of these were painted by drybrushing Pumpkin Orange lightly for definition all over, then hitting the whole thing hard with Sunshine (or maybe Marigold) Yellow. I hit the high points with Linen White (pretty hard on the Spheres) and then slathered everything in the Citadel Shade Casandora Yellow, which is a really amazing, perfectly clear yellow-orange glaze that does amazingly on even the plain orange plastic. Really gives it almost a dayglow effect. Might go in for another 6 of the spheres and some walls sometime - these are great, and I'm sure I'll get tons of use out of them as regular elementals, too.
  3. This is part of my campaign world, The Children's War. It's a post-dystopian setting - after a thousand years of constant warfare all across the world of Fidel, between ever-shifting sides, the Goddess of Law Kirin, and her consort/partner, the God of Chaos Phoenix, chose to take mortal guise and end the fighting. They took the form of two generals, Arram and Liliander, and set about rallying their own army - an army of children. The war that ensued was known as the Children's War, a devastating wash of bodies across the continents. It ended when, in a particularly fierce battle, Liliander was shot - with an arrow fletched with a Kirin-feather, the only thing that could not only slay him, but mortally cripple the Phoenix, the very Concept of Chaos, himself. Arram went mad without him to counterbalance her, and calling on her divine right, slaughtered the opposing army, leaving only her most loyal soldiers to bear witness to what would later be known as the Devastation of Issin'see. Still loss-mad, the Kirin's avatar would have slaughtered them, too - save that her apprentice and second, the fire-born Riishaad, was near enough to turn aside her rage. Riishaad gathered up what remained of the Phoenix's immortal energy, and took Liliander's place as a Chosen of the Phoenix. She is enough to hold Arram on the brink of madness - but only on the brink; she is too weak to keep her sane. The campaign takes place in the decades after the war; the Issin General Arram has retreated to her Citadel Tenebris and the company of her loyal soldiers alone to grieve, still mad - her death, or the extremes of her madness, will be world'send, and they try to keep her grounded. The world is rebuilding, recovering - and the God of Death, son of Phoenix and Kirin, has found a mortal lover, who fights to free mankind from the tyranny of the gods... by killing Riishaad and the other CA soldiers, and driving the Kirin from the mortal planes.

Just recieved my crate'o'figs. pics to follow, but it's... a lot of minis. 2 things of note: 1) When they said 250 1" bases for 7.50, they meant it. When they said 250 2" bases for 14.50, THEY STILL MEANT IT. ALL REAPER'S BASE ARE BELONG TO ME. 2) I got a copy of The Eldest Son as my box'o'stuff extra. It looks excellent.

    Release the Kraken!

Not magma bugbears. Magmabeasts, which look close enough to bugbears for the bugbears to be able to act as substitutes. But there's nothing Gnollish in Barsaive. PIRATE WEREWOLVES is all I'm sayin'. Don't have to be local. And this is Earthdawn, right? As I recall, weren't there Jackal-weres or something down in Creana? I based a whole tribe off them in my homebrew setting, but as I recall, they're pretty much exactly gnolls. You could have a bunch of them who were... say, stolen as kits and sold into service on a ship, who later killed the captain and became pirates since they know nothing of any life but the sea. Or merchant traders, bringing their goods to the sea to sell. Or smugglers, moving goods inland from the ships. Or heroes, trying to rescue their own kits (who are being sold as slaves).

    Release the Kraken!

With the gnolls, you say? And you have magma bugbears? The answer is obvious.

    Feathered Dragons

Some scale comparisons for the Reaper dragons and gryphwings: Silver dragon, Bones Gryphon wings, Reaper Greyhound Gryphon wings (03662), Bones Fire dragon body... Fire dragon with 03662 wings... Fire dragon with Bones gryphon wings (the metal version tho.)

Randomness IX: Incoherence is our superpower!

    Release the Kraken!

Lava kraken! Seriously, yeah you'll get more use out of a water kraken, but who wants to fight one more than once or twice anyways? Either way you'll use it like once per campaign - but the water kraken will be an "oh yeah, we did that" while the KRAKEN OF FIRE will live on in myth. Seriously, we still talk about the time we almost got TPKed by THE SEVENTEEN-HEADED PYROHYDRA. That was awesome. Be awesome.

    Feathered Dragons

The Reaper Gryphon (not the one in Bones, this one: http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/gryphon/sku-down/03662)has really good wings for this. They're about 2x the size of the Bones ones, and they're much broader, shaped like traditional dragon wings but feathery. Obviously that's a bit much for conversion bits, but I have two of that gryph that I grabbed for ten bucks a few years back (months? IDK) - I can put them next to some of my dragons if folks want, although they probably will only fit the silver dragon... (And now I'm tempted to do that conversion myself... and I have a fire dragon and a PF red without wings... poop.) ETA: I have a Partha Giant Gryphon, and I can confirm that those feathered wings look the same as the ones on it.

So I just made a small... you know, itty-bitty teeny-weenie... purchase from Reaper... Just a tiny little thing, a couple of paints I was running out of... 09061: Linen White $3.29 x1 09136: Walnut Brown $3.29 x1 A few insects that I felt would make good enemies... 77032: Oxidation Beast $2.49 x3 77394: Filth Beast $3.29 x2 77006: Great Worm $2.99 x3 77126: Vermin: Spiders (2) $2.49 x3 77025: Giant Spider $2.49 x5 77395: Cadirith, Demonic Colossal Spider $15.99 x1 A handful of demons and devils... 77324: Frost Devil $2.99 x3 77326: Lemures (2) $5.29 x2 77327: Hell Cat $2.99 x3 Some abberations, just because... 77043: Eye Beast $3.79 x2 77115: Shoggoth $2.49 x1 77114: Faceless Horror $3.29 x1 77048: Mocking Beast $2.29 x1 Some more rats, for my rat swarms (sewer levels, ho!) 77016: Rats (6) $3.49 x2 77293: Wererat Berserker $2.49 x1 77294: Wererat Stalker $2.49 x1 77295: Wererat Assassin $2.49 x1 A goodly collection of elementals, since that's been something I keep meaning to work on... 77081: Burning Sphere (3) $4.99 x2 77083: Medium Fire Elemental $2.99 x1 77082: Large Fire Elemental $8.99 x1 77311: Large Water Elemental $7.29 x1 77185: Large Earth Elemental $6.99 x1 A pair of giants... 77103: Nor'Okk, Ettin $4.99 x1 77313: Hill Giant Krug $8.99 x1 A peryton... 77392: Peryton $2.79 x1 And let's call it five hundred bases, because I'm going to need them after all this. 74130: 1 Inch Stnd RPG Bulk (74035) Qty 250 $7.75 x1 74135: 2 Inch Stnd RPG Bulk (74036) Qty 250 $15.50 x1 All in all it came out to a buck thirty nine after the gift card that the lovely LadyStorm sent me for helping out at PAX. Got a few cool projects in here - the fire elemental crew is going to be a major NPC in my campaign, the half-elemental form-shifter Riishaad, and her two companions/manservants, Arryuna and Urruk, two Huge fire elementals (I have a second Large Fire Elemental already) who take the form of wolves when they're serving her in human form. The fireballs are her attendants, a group of mind-linked small fire elementals that take the form of tiny, coiling dragons, who I'm going to paint curled inside each sphere. Should be enough to tide me over until Bones 3 arrives, huh? ETA: and my first Transformers Omnibus arrived today! Woo! Just gotta... not touch it till the monday drive to Cape Cod... Guh.

Instead of cinder blocks, use cast iron plumbing pipe. Drill holes, use flanges to support the shelves, and everything screws together. Three pipes on each side and two or three in the center for support, and it actually looks good and it's not as heavy. And if you do decide to do this, make some thick felt risers for the bottom layer or it will ruin your floors.

    New England Paint Day

You! JACK! where did you get the pralines btw?
  16. Box arrived with me three days ago. Gonna coordinate with the rest of NE to see if I can pass it off next paint day and avoid the 13$ in fees, if that's cool and won't delay things too much - wish I had had it to pass of today...

    Pronunciation of miniature

... Huh. I think I do this too.... Okay guys, but now we have to all say "miniature" to each other at ReaperCon to hear the different ways. Everyone make a badge with your pronunciation and we'll see who can collect the set.
  21. Aard_Rinn

    Pronunciation of miniature

Interestingly enough, I pronounce the noun (the thing we paint) the four sylable way, but the adjective (small) the three sylable way. So it's a min-a-churr min-ee-a-chur

    Foundations 3

Hm... might go in for a few sets of the gravestones - I do like them...
  25. Huh... I actually just painted all four of my little guys this morning. Ah well - I have another set. I will say that these are some of the worst casts I've ever dealt with in Bones. Flash absolutely everywhere, and I can barely tell what's detail and what's weird molding... and the blue one doesn't have a face? With that said... they look alright painted...
