Amazing wings!!
-
Just a couple quick questions. First, how do you guys feel about the P3 paint? Seems like it is decently priced on ebay, so I was wandering if its worth the money at all? Second, whats the difference between dry brushing and over brushing? Is there a difference?
-
This is a little off topic but don't want to start a new thread so please forgive me. When using a wet palette I still need to thin the paints, correct? The wet palette is only to keep the paints moist and does not thin the paints on its own?

I love wizards and have been thinking about painting this guy. I love his robes! Beautiful!

Those eyes though!!

They look awesome! I really like the Storm looking female wizard! Also that giant mini of the white cat in the back is AMAZING! How did you paint the fur like that?
-
I think you should keep him as is. I just recently started painting and my first mini was not so good. But even after just a few minis I can see that I have already improved a lot and that first mini serves as a reminder of how I have improved (it truly is a good motivator). Also the nice thing about Bones is that they are cheap! If you don't like this one and pictured something better, than just go buy the same one for a couple of bucks and try it again. On my first Show Off post of my first mini, someone suggested to go back and paint that first mini like once a year and that can really help you see how far you've come. Lastly, I don't know how good those instructions are for the paint sets, but even if they are great check out YouTube. There are so so so many videos that can help you learn techniques and get the idea of how things should look.

I'm glad this was posted I use a dry palette and was thinking about (pretty much decided) to start using a wet palette. These tips should help a lot. Although I'll probably start with paper towel, parchment paper, and one of those plastic sandwich boxes.

Question about P3 and techniques
NecroMancer replied to NecroMancer's topic in Painting Tips & Advice
Maybe I'll try them. It's only like $15 for 6 pots. -
I just have my son use craft paint and let him go to town. I don't know about your son but if I had him using the reaper paint he would have the whole bottle used after one session. I love him but he has no concept of conservation! I think the craft paints help him get an understanding of how to paint with less expense. That way too if he decides he wants a new color its not too expensive and I can get a couple chores out of him and can buy him 4-5 new paints for just a couple bucks. This also gives him a chance to spend some of that chore money on a mini as well. So where he could maybe earn a bottle or two of reaper paint he can get several colors and a mini or two. But I guess this depends on your budget. Once he's knocked out some more minis and learns a little self control with paint amounts I will up grade him to the better paints. Also remember kids this age are still developing their fine motor skills, if your son is like mine, I feel like the written instructions would only frustrate him and maybe discourage him if he doesn't do it exactly correct (which he might not be able to physically do at this point). We watch YouTube videos to get an idea of what to do I think this is a lot less pressure on him. That's just my two cents though. Either way having your son interested in something that you are interested in is priceless.

Hey guys I am thinking about getting an airbrush and I need a little help. I plan on mostly using this for priming and base coating and terrain. I don't feel like I need anything fancy since I don't plan to use it much and am on a budget. I figure I can always upgrade if I get super into it. That being said, I don't want to get completely ripped off. I have looked at a PointZero airbrush kit that come with an air compressor, three brushes, and everything else needed to get started for $75.00. I has 4.5 stars on Amazon! But I am curious if any of you know anything about it? I know a lot of people say don't go cheap with an airbrush but I really won't use it a ton and I am on a budget. You think I should just stick with a paint brush? I'm also curious if any one has used those little fold up plastic paint booths and if they work any good? I'll only be using acrylic. I also have 4 kids so I want to make sure it works well to pull out all the paint particles. Is it quiet enough to use if everyone is sleeping?

I checked these out at my LGS and I got to say they look pretty decent. They look very detailed (this might be because they are already primed and the detail stand out more compared to the white Bones) and they are decently priced. I like that you get 2 minis in a pack or if you get one of the larger ones they are priced the same as the 2 packs. I did see some that were bent, like the Bones some times come. This worries me since they are already primed and I don't know if the hot water trick will just destroy the primer anyways. Also I read that they are a harder plastic which makes me wonder if the hot water thing will even work on them to straighten them out. Oh, one other thing that I like is that all the bows have a bow string (unlike the Bones line). Probably grab a couple just to check them out but I still think Bones is the way to go for me! But it never hurts to expand your horizons sometimes.

Thanks everybody for the insights. It give me lots to think about. I really want to get an airbrush, I just don't currently have a good place to set it up so it might have to wait. Unfortunately I don't have a paint station or desk or anything like that so I don't want to have to pack and unpack everything every time I airbrush, especially if I'm just base coating and priming. With 4 kids and a wife and no garage its hard to find room to set up my own paint desk.

These guys are awesome! Well done! Another artist for me to aspire to! I really like these guys, they are some of the best that I have seen on this site! -
Yeah that hair is on point!

One more question for you, you may have already stated this somewhere on the tread. Did you airbrush this or was it with a brush (besides drybrushing)? I am starting my DDS2 (I'm starting with the adventurers) and the base just seems pretty intimidating with a brush.

That would be so messed up! .... I'd still watch though -
Looks awesome! I was wanting to get a couple of these guys. Know any good places to buy Bones (or other minis) in the Fort Collins/Denver area? I have found 2 places in Fort Collins that sell Bones but one has a very limited selection and neither place has a very good selection of paints.

Anymore updates?

Looks awesome! At first I didn't actually the Avatar models when I first saw them but yesterday I was looking at some work people had done with them and I decided that I actually really like them. Especially after seeing this one! Nice work!
