Randomness XV: 'tis a silly place.

Yes, nearly all the holidays the wife and I take are wild-life watching based. The world total of bird species is over 10,000. So I have a little way to go. The real difficulty is that, thanks to DNA-typing, LOTS of species have been renamed, reclassified and so on. The Blacksmiths Plover I saw 10 years ago is now A Blacksmith Lapwing. All very confusing and hard to keep track of. Still, at least I'm not some sort of sad person like anorak-wearing Train Spotters are.

Randomness XV: 'tis a silly place.

In reference to all the "Scary stuff hidden in plain sight" posts recently; As you know my ships take security teams on board when we transit High Risk areas. Last year we had a group of VERY tough ex-SAS men on board. Their leader said to me that he was much happier when they went on ship WITHOUT bringing guns. "So how do you defend us then?" I asked. He proceeded to produce several lethal devices out of ships tools and ended up turning a fire extinguisher into a flame thrower in about 2 minutes. Very glad he was on my side.

Brushes?? But.. but.. you mean this 2" roller I've been using all this time isn't the ideal thing?

The wonderful thing about ornithology is that you can bird-watch ANYWHERE. It adds interest to any walk. Go to a park, sit down and keep your eyes open. How many birds can you see in half an hour? The cheapest pair of binoculars will add to your pleasure. Bird books are nice, but expensive when new. I treasure mine. I come from a family of twitchers. (Lifelist 1329, and counting...)

Things will work out in the end, but it sounds like it will be a long haul. It is no bad thing that the police have at least been in contact with your son. I'm utterly unqualified to give advice Glitterwolf, but look after yourself. Making yourself distressed will not help anyone.

Reaper Karaoke Cafe: What do you sing?

Due to my painfully bad singing voice I would choose something that involves no actual singing. When people are silly enough to corner me into performing I usually do my version of Peter Sellars "Hard Days Night": http://www.openculture.com/2016/03/peter-sellers-recites-the-beatles-a-hard-days-night-in-the-style-of-laurence-oliviers-richard-iii.html

Same as others here, the chibis are zero priority.

Don't like broccoli bases, some other detailed integral bases can be OK, it depends how far the sculptor/caster has allowed the subjects feet to "melt" into the scenery... Happy with slots and pins. If it is a figure I am "going to town" on I shall end up modelling my own base, so I will cut off the tab, drill and pin the figure to the base when all is finished.

Gnolls: Bones vs Frostgrave size comparison

Nothing to offer by way of comparison, but here are the Frostgrave gnolls made up; They are pretty much an exact match with the other Frostgrave human figures. I have done arm and weapon swaps with their Barbarians that fit very well indeed.

Opened a wall cupboard door. Then knelt down to get something off a lower shelf... and stood up into the opened door. Woken up by my dog licking my face.

Very tough for you, Glitterwolf. It is awful for a capable, active person like yourself to feel that they cannot DO anything.. Maybe I am naïve, but I would still consider contacting the police. Failing that, do you have a service in the Netherlands similar to The Samaritans?

I will have the computer on, showing reference/inspiration pictures of whatever figures I'm working on.

Yes, absolutely, I've been clamouring for a howdah on the back of the tortoise since the minute I saw the artists sketch. This figure has so much potential, a wide variety of loads for different genres/periods could be added, a palanquin for wounded adventurers, a miniature swivel gun or harpoon,,, the only limit to the items that Reaper could add are our imaginations.

You should feel justifiably proud in ensuring that, thanks to you, your co-worker has at least a fighting chance from now on. And that quiet self-esteem is worth more than any thanks from others, more even than the high regard that this forum holds you in.

The knobs or spikes on the top of lighthouses are lightning rods. Plenty of storms near lighthouses.
  22. Just bringing this back to the top of the forum page. I'm the current holder and expect to be back in UK early in March. Are there enough people interested to start another round of this going?
  23. Yes, there is a UK/Europe version of this, and @alchemist has helpfully provided a link. I am the lucky person who is presently holding the pot. As astute reader will have noticed I work abroad a lot, so it is currently not possible for me to pass it along. I expect to be back in UK in about 6 weeks time. We could think about doing another round of this then.

Getting to Know You, Feb 2019

Plans for February: Get paid! What's on my hobby bench? Dear wife has just told me that one leg has fallen off my painting table, so literally NOTHING is on it. Glad I packed up before I came away. @NebulousMissy: Very well done for doing the right thing. Situations like that always sort out the sheep from the goats. And it's nearly always the quiet, unassuming person who steps forward and takes on the problem. I hope your co-worker makes a full recovery and can thank you in person.
