  1. Painted (mostly) by-the-numbers, Anirion: This was a departure from my normal style of painting, and I made a number of mistakes, but wanted to stick to the instructions and see how it all turned out. All things considered, I think it looks decent. I didn’t worry about trying to correct the bend in the staff or any mold lines. And I added a third highlight layer (more yellow) to the robes, to make them pop just a bit more. The camera washed these out, it seems. The little details probably deserved more attention, but the focus here was clearly on the robes. I think I did learn a few new things, hopefully for the better. More practice will help. Comments and critiques welcome.

    77441 Ostarzha Elf Cleric

Since my group is traveling through Middle Earth between the time of the hobbit and lord of the rings, our last mission was to escort an elven lady to take the boat over the sea. I painted the bones Ostarzha Elf Cleric for Irime, and tried my best to paint the sigil of Fingon/Gilgalad as she was a member of that high elven family.
  3. Hi there, another PC of my recently finished Tyranny of Dragons D&D campaign: Lafisar the wood elf druid. My player loved the miniature's pose, so this Elquin mini became the party's druid. Hope you like it!

    03449: Halmar, Young Wizard

Hi there, I have another player character from my D&D Storm King's Thunder campaign to share. It belongs to a player with a phoenix bloodline sorcerer. So this is the fire guy of the party. He liked the dynamic pose and the flame of the Halmar miniature, so I painted him up. I'm not good with OSL at all, but I tried to add a little bit of light on the clothes and the hair. Have to practice more before I try glowing undead ^^ I hope you like it.

    03566: Valloa, Female Elf Thief

Sometimes you have to force your way through the rough patches. Fortunately, I recently found Valloa here at my FLGS. Given that she’s been on my “want” list for a while and their selection of metal minis was sparse at best, I snapped one up to dispel the painting melancholy. Apologies in advance for the bad images, lighting didn’t want to comply, and the closest to true color I could get has bad shine from camera flash + sealer. Here she is: I didn’t originally have plans to paint this one as a drow. But, I wanted a chance to try out the dark elf skin triad and didn’t have any other available elf minis to mess around with. The paints are fantastic though, and will likely see use outside of skin in the future. This is the second mini I’ve done with a purple cloak. I think the shadows and highlights turned out better (and more varied) than the previous attempt. And working upon previous advice, used no less than seven shades of brown overall (not that you can tell). Please feel free to comment and critique! I need to improve on things next time.

    Hackmaster/Ral Partha Elf Warrior

So I went away on vacation a week ago, and I had almost finished this one before I left, but I ran out of time and didn't seal him or put him on a base. Got him done last night though. A great Jim Johnson figure sculpted for Hackmaster around 2003 and then last year Ral Partha bought the molds and started producing them again. Anyhoos, fun figure. I've been painting up a bunch of these Hackmaster minis, using only the finest Reaper paints to bring them to life! As always having metal issues, my constant struggle, but they seem to be coming out pretty okay these days and I think the metal actually looks better in photo than in person.

    My Ghost Archipelago Crew

With our upcoming Ghost Archipelago campaign less than two months away, I thought I would start introducing the crew I plan to use, as I get the figures painted up. I'll start with are my Heritor (Reaper 77044 Turanil, Male Elf paladin) and Warden (03415 Lanura Windsong, Elf Wizard). We decided for our initial GA test game, which we are having after our December Frostgrave campaign game, that we would roll randomly for Heritor abilities. I got an interesting assortment, and depending on how things go during the test game, I just may keep them. For the Wardens we choose whatever Branch and Spells we wanted. I've had in mind wanting to use these two figures, so I decided to go with a crew of Elves. The figures I'm using for my Heritor and Warden were already painted, so given the color scheme I had used for Warden's figure I deiced to go with a Vine Warden. Heritor: Lord Hytieral Fortrywn- Retired from a lengthy military career to enjoy his wealth and his laurels. Powerful. Landholder. Doesn’t tolerate fools. Not happy that his younger step-sister has out-maneuvered him into taking her daughter, his niece, along with him to act as his Warden. She says it will be good for the girl to have experience in the world; he finds the young magic-user barely tolerable, and the fact she isn’t a true wizard is an embarrassment. Daze- 3 Evade-5 Stand Firm- 5 Surge- 5 Disarm-5 So I think the Daze is going to be interesting as the main ability. Apparently this guy is so formidable looking as he twirls his sword around acrobatically, that enemies just kind of freeze up when they see him. The other abilities I think fall in nicely with someone who was a professional soldier. Warden: Marnilyne Dewdrisane- Young. Impetuous. Curious. Argumentative. Naïve. In awe of her uncle, and a little scared of him; but also terribly excited to be a part of the adventure ahead. Brambles Plant Walk Warp Weapon Summon Animal Changed to: Water of Life after the test game we played. I chose Summon Animal as my out-of-school spell, as I've learned from Frostgrave that having an extra figure to command can make a real difference. Also, I saw this Warden as being generally loving, and being connected to, all living things, plant or animal. During our test game, I became aware of how beneficial having Water of Life was when I watched as my opponent constantly was able to heal his Heritor during the battle, while mine slowly was worn down to half strength.
  9. All these Zombies I've been working on lately have got me wanting to get to started something a little less speed painterly. So I decided to pick up my Christmas Elves from my reaper order over Christmas and get working on them. I got into the grove painting up the naughty elf so all I have is where she stands now. I liked how she was painted up in the store so I used that as my start. Here is how she looks at the start of the WIP: And of course here is the nice one patiently waiting in primer to be started:

Deadly Grace: Dark Sword Elf Warrior

Finally got around to taking photos of my ReaperCon entries for 2017 and this was one of my entries in the Painter's category. This is Dark Sword's Female Wood Elf Warrior and I wanted to paint this one up for a long time but could not decided on what color scheme to use. All I knew was that I wanted to do something different than what you would expect for a wood elf but I did not know what. It finally came to me, use mainly purples and greys and make her a drow. After determining that, the base plan came to me pretty quickly, place her in a cave with natural crystals and spiderwebs. The webs were created using UHU glue. She ended up being my entry that was judged for that category and I was very pleased to receive a gold medal. Any feedback would be appreciated.
  11. It's been a while since I've posted anything here. I have some making up to do. Forgive me. Dub Bullock. A most unpleasant painting experience. Mine was badly cast so I had to fix up a few spots. This is not something I'm good at. Greenstuff is my enemy. Thorvald, Dwarf Hero was an experiment in blue armour. I'm not sure if I'll do that again. Baeldrinahr, Rogue Fighter. I've painted this one before with a similar scheme.

    03667: Nonalla Ellinad, Elf Wizard

Reaching into my box of Unpainted Things from Four Years Ago, I drew this figure. It looked simple enough, but turned out to have an awful lot going on: This is probably the most fun painting I’ve ever had, there is so much going on! Shirt and boots are Gory Red, and cape is Royal Purple. The fireball is a random assortment of Lava triad colors with some Candlelight Yellow tossed in. Even got to do some freehand on the book pages, to questionable effect, but not disastrous. C&C appreciated, though I am curious as to the origin of her name...

    Ral Partha Female elf thief

Good evening all, just got this figure painted last night and photographed at lunch today. I usually have a pretty good idea who the sculptors are for Partha, but this one eludes me. A female elf thief, I started originally thinking about foresty colors, but her black hair soon gave way to purple clothes and soon thereafter all thoughts of the forest went out the window. Anyhow, here she is, enjoy:
  15. So here is another one in my little series of old and new. I was actually going to post this yesterday as well, but I didn't have a good front shot. So this is a Grenadier Elf or Half Elf fighter, from their twenty-piece woodlands adventure box. I painted this figure way back in the eighties to be one of my player characters Renny back in the day when we played D&D at Star Realm in Omaha. Back then there was a buy named Bill if I remember correctly from Offutt who was our DM, another guy, I think Roy, and then another random assortment of teenagers. and a shot from behind, where you'll see there's lots of grass stuck to the base. I think I just didn't wait long enough for his sealant on the base to dry before I stuck him into the grass. I always paint the base black again and then seal, because I will have ultimately made a mess all over the base while painting it. Not too worried though, these are being painted just for fun. and here's the front shot I was missing yesterday, where you can see a bit of difference in the shield and face: and then just some shots of them in the same photo: So there you have them, a small journey into my adolescent past, up to my current almost 50 year old self, who as per my beautiful wife, is still probably somehow stuck back in the past with my fascination for "muñequitos". Like I mentioned in my previous posts I've got a few more of these yet to be started, that I'll probably do when I'm "between projects". Anyhoos, enjoy!

    07262: Tuilin, Female Elf

Hi everyone, I finished Tuilin tonight. Color scheme was dictated by my wife and 5-year old daughter, right down to the sapphires and yellow flowers. I like her a lot. This was my first attempt at black hair. Critiques welcome!
  17. Hey, @ub3r_n3rd, here's the figure that I managed to finish. The top clear coat makes it a bit shiny, but I've got it under harsh lights. With the very zoomed in picture I'm not exactly happy with the shading on the right hand side where it transitions from light to dark in the middle fold, but that was vexing me for a long time. It's the way I want it to look, but I'm not sure everybody's eye will interpret the shape that I wanted to illustrate. There's also a woodgrain painted on the bow, but it is very subtle and doesn't look to show up here. I guess that should have been something a bit more stark. Really feel that she's missing an arrow in her hand, since she seems to want to be nocking an arrow, but there's nothing there. Need to work on my eyes for the next figure, but that's a common refrain.

    SG's Summer and Fall WIP

Well, I finally got to a point on these where it would be worth it to post. These are my major projects that I will be working on for the next few months and all four are planned ReaperCon entries. Right now there is not much to see as they are just at the primer stage but the bases are built and also ready for paint. So from left to right we have the Dark Elf Assassin from Scale 75, Tarko from Scale 75's Fallen Frontiers line, Dark Sword's Wood Elf Warrior, and Reaper's own Crimson Herald. Please excuse the blurry pics, I am cleaning my apartment and this was the best place to take pics.
  19. I was stuck on another project, so I took a break and painted some other minis. This one looks better in real life... Color correction seems to be destroying the image :-/ Yendrensovith is an NPC in my currently-paused campaign; a drow of spectacular violence and a complicated past. For the curious, more information is available here.
  20. Stared work on this guy finally! I sculpted the base myself. I really like that he is slight bending at the knees which made him standing on the stairs i made look more authentic. On to the painting! Texture is the name of the game from this weekend. GW: Vomit Brown (which is like a yellow brown) on the tunic. Several coats until I could not see grey from the primer. GW: Vomit Brown & Leather White (my favorite paint bottle ) [4:1] - To do some upper highlights on the all the raised areas. Dotting or Stippling with a Mixture: GW Vomit Brown mixed with Walnut brown. So the color was a little darker than the tunic's primary color. Then stippled or dotted with Walnut brown over THE ENTIRE THING. After that I did some diluted brown washes pushing into the recesses and some re-highlighting, re-shadowing, etc etc. The pants: Painted in Leather White highlighted in PURE White washed in Muddy Brown (which is a green brown.) The bag: Painted Royal Purple, highlighted with Leather white then washed in Muddy Brown

Link to the Past mid level kit

A while ago, Sodapop Miniatures released the Deeproot Scout- a character I think we can all agree had some inspiration in Nintendo's favorite elf. Naturally, my favorite incarnation of the Hero of Time to base him on (Link to the Past) as seen here The hair is red (even pink) because I was working from the pixel art rather than the art in the book. More recently, Sodapop released a resculpt of the character- so I decided that the best thing to do would be to level him up a bit. So here is my Deeproot Scout painted up as Link with Blue Male, the reforged Master Sword, red shield and boomerang.
  22. Another wip, this time is alastriel the sorcerer, i wanted to give her a dark elf look, and now feels like im gonna explode trying to paint the hair
  23. For your consideration, I offer Nolevniss Azrinae: Reaper Miniature 60162. Or in this Multiverse: Elariel Moonshadow This elf Magi was an active sculpt to paint. The robes and cloak are dynamic in portrayal of wind movement and direction. The robes were long and laying folded in back, which suggests weight and volume. Limited palette with work on suggesting different textures of cloth. Teeny eyes. Delicate sculpt too with the hair and features. And the familiar was an enjoyable if not surreal sculpt. I was told by the person who wanted this painted, "And paint the baby dragon gold." When I popped my Opti-visor on I was like, "That's not a dragon..." This creature reminded me of the haemonculus familiar from earlier Dungeons and Dragons editions, while the head reminded me of an eye-less vampire bat. What you see is the result. Cute. (But you don't want to be left alone in the same room with it.) The staff is a weapon of Power - like Purple Name power. Spell book and scrolls along with bandolier pouches told me a story of a travelling Mage - even his staff clutched a simple stone at the foot to act as counterweight. But not a nice guy. I hope you enjoy him. :) Peace and blessings.
