DSM7315 - Elf Warrior With Sword

This has taken a lot longer than I anticipated! First of all, It's a MAGNIFICENT piece of work by Tom Meier. It is 30mm (small). Like any Meier sculpts I do, I provide myself with an extra challenge. I am going to have to either dig down deep, or reach to the stars to paint it where I am happy, so I go all out. This one is no exception. I was really keeping myself to control, color wheel mixing, and having a vision besides the show off work at DSM. I wanted something different. I went with a bit of simplicity, and I placed him on a rocky terrain (another challenge to myself). The satisfaction of painting this was quite a rush ! Your comments, and critiques are great appreciated and I look forward to your feedback. Jay. Here is Meier's Elf Warrior w/Sword.

    Hans the Loner DSM4601

I saw this Mini and it was a gift from my son. I saw the way it had to be constructed, and that the sword was very bent in shipping; it was a Tom sculpt.. Deal with it was all that went through my mind. Mieer sculpts are teaching sources for me, so I set out to learn from this one. Don't think I had one kick my Elf so bad in a long time..ROFL. It took four tries to pin it, and the small size made it more challenging. I ADORED working and learning on this one. I had to baby it in some ways, and some how it caused me to work with more simplistic colors, pay more attention to detail, and work my color wheel (or colour for our friends above in Canada, and across the pond). So here is Hans the Loner. As usual, C&C are always solicited and desired. Let me know what you think ! Jay Here are some photos:

Male Knight With Axe - DSM7202

Another quite challenging Mini. I seem to be wrestling with these characters more than I would normally. I have the suspicion that I am doing rather more difficult mini's, and using a lot more ideas, and experimentation than I have since starting this incredible hobby. I was originally going to use the broad sword that also came with this sculpt, the sculpture demanded and rejected the sword every time I put it in place, I finally gave up, axe went on like a piece of cake ! I chose to mix all my most difficult colors to paint him up. Robinh will be very happy with one color choice..LOL. When I first started painting I wanted to do a bronze and other color mixture, never could quite get it where I like it. I remembered it, and this time I pulled it off. There are three bronze colors that I mixed for the armor (two color's of green, and the Blue for the rose medallions, and face on the armor. I tried to make everything complimentary as I went about the mini. Here is my interpretation of the Male Knight with Axe. As usual your input, commentary and likes are appreciated. So without more words, Here he is: I just made a new photo of the miniature next to a quarter. This is a 30 mm miniature. Think this shows it better, and gives everyone a better look at it. Using my new phone...

    Greenskin Wars

  5. I decided to post what I am doing with this mini, since I just decided that I was not following my usual routine. He has been broccoli clipped, cleaned up as best I could do, and Primed. Rather than line him with my usual brown liner, I decided to use a black wash. It gives me a lot of contrast, but I don't have to paint over that usual brown. The black should work for my intentions. Nice to see all the fine details on this one. The beard makes me shiver in AN-TIS-I-PAT-ION. Tom did a magnificent job on that, as well as the right hand at the base of the staff on left side. He always sneaks in a detail you aren't expecting. I am planning on basing him on some tree bark to look like a mountain ledge, and some tree's around the base. I'll try to make sure I show my various steps to completion ! So here are a few photos of where he stands now.

    Tywin Lannister - DSM5059

I thought this mini was going to be a piece of cake. Surprise. We have spent twelve days fighting it out. NOTHING was going to be easy on this one. Shadows were a bear, highlighting took much longer than I thought it was. Even basing (which I thought was going to come together easy fought me. So, after saying that, I am quite happy with the way this miniature turned out. Here is Tywin Lannister as I thought he should look like (remember, I don't look at television). Oh.. If you want to see the miniature in more detail: Hold down the CTRL key, and press the + key to enlarge the photo. Then Press the CTRL key plus the - key to return to your normal viewing. As always, your comments and critiques are welcomed, and sought after. Jay

    Tyden, RM-02608

Yes - It IS a Reaper Mini ! and Not anthropomorphic. With all the events happening in the last several weeks, I barely was able to get much painting in. CC Numbers stolen, Bank being bought out and account changes, then finishing off the language course all threw me for a loop. Concentration became quite difficult. I am happy to report that the mini has finally been painted to my satisfaction. Thanks to our local Barbarian for tracking down one of his relatives for me. Tyden., Barbarian. She is really small, and I had a lot of fun painting her. As always your comments and critiques are greatly appreciated. Blonde hair, bronze "shield"... I almost painted her blue, not much to that female armor ! Here are a couple of photos.

    DSM7455 - Dragonkin Rogue

Ever since I saw this mini I have wanted to paint it. I was given it as a gift. I hope that the giver has noticed the hours of pleasure I have enjoyed bringing this figure to life. Tough, and challenging, and yet SOO rewarding. The image of a dragon always appears in my mind associated with lava, smoke and treasure. So I decided to challenge myself (like the figure isn't enough), to create a lava base. Your comments and criticism are always welcomed, and sought after. Please leave me a comment ! So here is my interpretation of the Dragonkin Rogue. I also created a WIP while I was doing this. It is located here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69750-dragonkin-rogue-dsm7455/

    Dragonkin Rogue - DSM7455

I have been itching to do this mini since I saw it in the catalogue, and then my son sent it to me ! Now that I have done a Tom Meier miniature again, I have earned the pleasure of painting this one. I did a slight mod when I was assembling it. I did not like the right arm so low to the ground, looked like he was running, I raised the arm up so that he looks like he is fighting. I think it has a bit more tension in it. Here is "The Dragonkin Rogue" prior to priming or adding brown liner. Just a couple of views. Some of these details are VERY shallow, almost hints. I love the folds in the materials. I am thinking of some rich, and deep blues in those shadows, and lighter blues for highlights. Beyond that, strap on your seat belts.

    TBM3016 King Pelenore (on Foot)

The Temperature here has been in the Ninety's since I finished painting The Hawkman. I didn't think I finish this next one today. Too hot to go outside, so had extra time to devote to it. Firstly, this is 25MM (that is the size of a U.S. Quarter). The shield is about 1/4 inch in size. I usually keep the basing simple on the Arthurian's since I intend to base them all together into two Dioramas when they are done. When I learn something new, I go back to my beloved Tom Meier sculpts and repeat what I have learned on a much smaller scale. I adore Tom's work, and I will always come back to them to learn to control the new technique. I have added a few adjusted photos, to incorporate some requested modifications by UB3R, and robinh. Think they were RIGHT ON with their suggestions. I have done the mounted version of him already, you can find it by clicking the Jasonator tab above. Your Comments/Critiques are earnestly sought after. Please leave me a comment if you like what I have done. Here is the Dismounted King Pelenore.

Jungle Lord - Tin Man Miniatures

I've been trying to make sure that I do Miniatures that teach me things at this stage of the game. Lots of Muscle on this one, and small details. Its challenging to get the balance right, and deal with all the details. I've enjoyed this one, especially mixing up the flesh tones, and the basing. As always, Comments and Criticism welcomed and desired. Here is my interpretation of the Jungle Lord:

    DSM1307 - HAWKMAN

Here is my interpretation of the Hawkman from Dark Sword Miniatures. Fun is an understatement, delightful and challenging miniature. I totally enjoyed the basing, and the challenge of sculpting in Greenstuff, I hope you like what I have done. Comments and criticism are always sought out. Only way we learn is from experience and each other. Here is the Hawkman protecting his cliff side nest.

    Hawkman-DSM1307

Ever since I first saw this mini I have wanted to try my hand at painting it. AS usual, I will ignore what colors they have used in the original only view of the mini. I want something different, and I have a few ideas about how I want to base the Hawkman already. Just priming, and putting the coat of brown liner on it was a terrific intro into what can be done with this one. Love the folds (thinking rich shadows, and great highlights). That Hawks head.. hmmm... its a birds head to me, though at least a Raptor. This is going to be a fun bumpy ride.. Yee-Hah !!! Here is what he looks like to begin with. Jay

    Reaper warlord marilith/ Snake Demon

Here is my latest work, the metal Reaper Warlord Marilith snake demoness. I tried to give her an otherworldly appearance with smooth blue skin and lava-orange serpentine scales. For her clothing/armour I used gold as it has something of a Mayan or Aztec look.

    Hedgehog Bard - DSM8039

This has been a learning mini. First it is SMALL. 25mm tall, 25mm long. There is no gluing to be done, but that mean its really tight to get into and around. Basing will also be a challenge, since it is the size of your 25mm base also. I removed the broccoli base it came with, and pinned it. Its a lot of fun to paint, and that face and needle/spiked fur of his is quite the challenge. So here is the Bard reclining in a meadow of rocks and flowers singing to himself.. "Prickly Love" which he is composing for himself. Note the bottle of wine, and I have NO idea what is in his little orange bag next to the vino. Let me know what you think of him please. Your comments/critiques are always welcome and solicited. Jay

    DSM8039-Hedgehog Bard

I've been working on this guy for a week now. He's 25mm tall, that is the size of a U. S. quarter. Now, I'm going to point out how difficult this Hedgehog is to paint. It doesn't mean I am unhappy, its teaching me tones, its the growing pains I'm complaining about ! LOL This is one tough to wrestle with mini. I thought, okay, little brushes and we are off.. Yeah.. Dream on kid. This mini has wrestled with me for every layer of Paint or liner I have put on. Getting the angles correct to apply a coat of paint is SOOO frustrating ! I finally have gotten to the point where I'll let you see what I am doing. I have removed the base that it came with, its pinned. Getting the spikes to not look like fur was complicated. The face has a lot of personality. I've started on the base already. so, now that I spoke about him, here is the Hedgehog bard in the painting stage. I'm ignoring everything that was done on the dsm site showing how they painted him. Photos retaken. These are a bit better. Hard to focus on this small mini. Jay
  18. I have been working on this cat all week, having a blast. I'm not going to make this a "WORKING WIP", just figured I would post what I am doing when I get the chance. As usual, the anthropomorphic figures are highly entertaining. I continue pushing my envelope with each of these. This one has OSL going in on face, book, hand and left shoulder. Never thought I would be doing that actually. Fur on this one is quite the challenge ! Don't let that angelic little face fool you, he IS a warlock ! So here is what I have been working on !

    Mouse Warrior (DSM7956) WIP

I have been working on this mini for over a week. Glue-up was a pain in the elf. I am working on solving that problem. It is finally pinned, primed, and covered with bown liner. I tend to use the brown liner as a discovery process. I find all the little interesting details in the miniature with that brown liner. The little leather pouch on his belt, has a cats face carved into it. I will try to find some way to display that. I tend towards being photo heavy, and I will try to document what I am doing (If I know). I have no idea what direction this mouse is going to go, except that right now he has pink ears, and will probably be a gray mouse. Once I get painting, all bets are off, I don't use anyone else's painting to copy, and I mix my own colors. So here I begin to paint the Mouse Warrior. Note that most of the broccoli base has been removed. I left the area around the tail, since it is to fragile to survive without the support. Edited to add: Please note that above You see a line of buttons (TAGS) that tell you about the mini. If you click on Jasonator it will do a search and post a link to every miniature I have in the WIP's and Show Off section. I recommend that EVERYONE uses this feature. Folks can see your previous work, and YOU can find what you did. It takes just a second to do, but benefits are amazing.

    DSM7956 - Mouse Warrior

I have been painting this over in the Show-Off Forum for the past two weeks. Here is my Mouse Warrior completed. If you want to see how I got to this stage of the miniature, check out the Mouse Warrior WIP by clicking my name tab below the title. I can honestly say that this was a total delight to paint, So many options, and some real challenges in there. All that fur and really fine details added to my enjoyment. I especially enjoy the decision making process of what can I do with this. So here he is. You comments/Criticism is always solicited, and greatly appreciated. Let me know what you think please. Jay

    DSM7910 Frog Minstrel

Yeap, I painted another Frog. ROFL. A few words about the Frog Minstrel, Roll up your sleeves when you go to do this one. This is a really tough frog to work on. I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this. I thought it would be straight on... NOPE it isn't. The choices are phenominal. Little fiddley bits show up in the dangest, most difficult of places. At one point I found it Boring ! How can a frog be boring. So I resolved that thinking of our good friend Malefactus. So Here is the Frog Minstrel on a lily Pad, with his two Conger Eels playing a bagpipe, and a horn! Yes, I did intend to make you laugh ! I can't stop giggling. I kept hearing a certain song in my head as I was painting this. Your comments and critiques are appreciated, and sought after. Here they are performing: "I'd like to be under the sea In an octopus's garden in the shade He'd let us in, knows where we've been In his octopus's garden in the shade"

    DSM-7976 Guinea Pig Wizard

For those that were following along with me in WIP as I painted and based this Mini, Thank You. I had forgotten how much fun it is to explain what it is, and why you are doing something. I set a goal to base the mini on a bark base (which is a LOT of fun to do). I was also doing a lot of experimenting. The Crystal, and using my color wheel to get Contrast, and also to use Triads, for colors. The challenge has been a delight for me. Hope you got an idea how I approach a mini when I am painting it, and basing it. Thank you for your comments and suggestions as I went along. Your C/C are always welcome and sought after ! Leave me a comment please. Here is the completed Guinea Pig Wizard. Here is the link to the Work In Progress Thread: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/68089-guinea-pig-wizard-dsm7976/ Jay

    Guinea Pig Wizard - DSM7976

I've decided to do another WIP after not doing so for quite some time. My son gave me this mini and my friends want to see it painted, and based. I have gotten into basing thanks to many on the Forums, and so that is part of what I am up to. I'm planning on using bark in the basing on this right off the git go. Secondly, I started clipping off the broccoli base that DSM come with. I've had to modify some of my methods, and a bit of how I do things. I still mix my own colors, I use brush on primer (gray), and now I take my time, and really water down the colors. I just get richer and better results (in my opinion). I was given a marvelous gift that I am going to share right from the beginning. It is a plastic vise, with a suction cup bottom. Now that I pin the base I need something to hold it. For me this is perfect. I can hold in my hand, I can suction cup it to the desk and file, and or prime, and line if I desire. It makes me remember to remove that broccoli. So here is what I am working on now. Firsts photo is of the critter on the vise, then raw, then primed with brown liner. I love this thing already ! Jay
  25. USPS tracking has been a bit uneven for me this time around, but it lists a delivery time of today and has been in the correct town since 4:30am, so I'm going to call it good. It was marked as delivered while I was typing this. If however you go by SGHawkins09 and haven't picked up your mail today, stop reading and savor the anticipation for a bit.
