Over on the Something Awful forums, they have an Oath thread where you promise to paint a model (taking a time-stamped picture to show it's unpainted at the start of the month) and then get extra points for following the month's "Jurnal" (generally a theme of painting and a technique). This month it was money and a technique you hadn't tried before. You only get one point regardless, but I decided to go for both. For the money theme, I painted the prospector striking it rich with a gold nugget. And for the technical challenge, I decided to try some freehand. I haven't really done much in the way of freehand, and I was struck by Rhonda Bender's version of the model. I decided to try something similar. As you can see, it didn't come out quite as neat and tidy as hers. My lines still need a lot of work. I gave the shirt a glaze of yellow to try and make the stripes look like part of teh shirt, but I feel that may have just made them look muddier. The jeans also have a crosshatch pattern in them. I was trying to copy the way she did the jeans on hers to give it a fabric pattern. Again, my lines aren't quite as tidy as hers. Nor as thin. Still, I don't think it came out too horribly, and it was an interesting experiment. Here's the back view. You can see a bit more of where i was putting the lines on the jeans. He's awfully proud of that nugget. No one tell him it's iron pyrite. One annoying bit on the mini. While Reaper normally has really good quality control, the mold had clearly slipped slightly on this guy, and it took a crap ton of filing and cutting to get get him looking right. The pickaxe still has a pretty sizable gouge on it.
