  1. Alright, tonight is my first proper large game of CAV - Two buddies and I are playing tournament-style, "pick-your-force," that is to say I've built three, 6000 point forces (Adon, Templar, Malvernis) all with distinct playing styles. BUT ALSO we are fighting it out on a 6x4 sci-fi city! I haven't made any major changes since the last time I posted pics of about 1/3 of this thing, so the roads are still unmarked, but honestly I just want to get playing. Battle report to follow (probably), but pictures NOW!!!
  2. Just a quick post with a single pic - last week my friend and I had a tough time getting through 6,000 points, so we scaled it back a bit: 5,000, two squads each, no upgrades or specializations. We got a lot farther, but we still couldn't finish the battle in two hours (though it was getting to a sort of spillover point - kills were starting to pile up, CAVs had moved into their best firing positions, and so on). Anyhow, only managed to snap a single pic at the beginning of deployment, and it's not great, but: HILLS! I took some time off from working on my dissertation to build six hills out of pink insulation foam. They dried just in time to have a battle! The river, if you're curious, is from a company called "Wargamers Terrain." I have no idea why my friend put a bus in the ruins.

    CAV City

So definitely a work-in-progress, but getting very near the point of "I cannot look at this anymore without screaming," I present: CAV CITY! Details follow the pictures for any interested parties. DETAILS: This is a 4x2 section of game board. Full-size, my board is 6x4. I have enough road and buildings to cover the whole thing in a decently dense city section, especially if I throw in a tree-filled park, hill, or river. Buildings are blue electrical boxes spraypainted with "windows' painted on. Road is Styrene sheet painted with stone textured spray paint. Cars and buses: Ordered off Amazon - basically off-brand micro machines. Fun detail: only the buses are articulated enough to notice this, but these are UK-style "Drive on the left" vehicles! No idea how long this actually took to build as I work on it in my spare time, but I'll say that I started buying blue boxes in, I think, January. STILL TO DO: Road lines, a few more building details, and tidy up the edgework on the game board (you can still see wood in a few pics). STILL WANT: A bridge or two...that's about it. Otherwise, IMHO, it fits the bill for a futuristic / alien pre-fab city. An FTL ship jumps into system, dispatches a handful of dropships loaded up with snap-together plasteel and ferrocrete shelters, industrial rollers lay down pavement, and eager colonists are ready to begin their exciting new lives right up until they're declared collateral damage as a bunch of big, stompy robots smash them to pieces! Happy gaming!

    Second Batch O' Cavs!

Technically, this is batch 3 - I painted 10 more Malvernian CAVs before this round, but: ADON! Since I have so few Adonese units, relatively speaking, I figured I'd dive in and knock out the whole force at once. I managed to pick up those APCs on the cheap, so I am very tempted to add some infantry, but the rumor mill says there may be some new space-elfy units coming up soon, so I'm pumping my brakes. Paint job: Speed paint. Pic quality: rushed. Still, hope this helps people get motivated to paint!

    Homebrewed CAV: Swallowtail

The Swallowtail is a heavy recon chassis produced by Borsig-Spline for the Adon Economic Confederation. Roughly the size of the Mantis, the Swallowtail sacrifices armour for what is an impressive speed for a CAV its size, preferring to flank enemy forces for a surgical strike with its twin Herker heavy PBGs. 6. These are two kitbashes I assembled years ago that have been languishing in the Limbo of my parents' house until the day I live close enough to retrieve all of my hobby stuff. I visited briefly last week and had a chance to grab a few quick pictures to share. The first is a substitute for the RMI Bishop, which (apologies to James Burrell) has some of the ugliest arms in the CAV range. I filled in the leg-spaces on a Spider body and mounted it on Sabertooth legs. Then I removed the side missile packs and replaced them with a pair of the Warden's GGC turret. The second is intended as an RMI-styled substitute for the MK4 Ghost, another of my least favorite sculpts. This one was fairly involved. I started with Sabertooth legs, a Sultan torso, and Chancellor arms. I built up the legs with brown stuff to give it a bulkier feel and visually distinguish it from the Sabertooth and the above kitbash, and filled in the indent where the Sultan's missiles normally sit (if I remember right, the other brown stuff on the back was just covering up a slight miscast). Then, in the most challenging step, I cut out the middle quarter or third of the Chancellor's gun barrels and pinned them back together. I used a fairly long pin in an attempt to keep the barrels straight.

    130517 78th Legion OPREP

************************** 0215Z MAR 18 78th Legion 19 Maniple Whitewald Outpost 0605 0705 0805 0905 Investigate reports of enemy activity in sector. Check viability of recently acquired Rach CAVs as a recon force. Made contact with an Adon recon unit in the church district. Eliminated threat. Heavy equipment loss sustained. Wyvern, Chancellor, Challenger Sultan It appears they were scouting the area for use as a forward base. (4)CAVs Full loadout Frank Bergmann, Evelyn Azevedo Cavalcanti, Lesław Woźniak, Pauli Sillanpää, Nancy J. Hill, Nives Mađar, Amber Piddington, Aiden BlacketTiamat, Dictator-B, Weasel, Vanquisher Weasel makes for good recon but lacks sufficient strength to engage multiple targets. Dictator-B and Vanquisher preform well in solo and support roles. Tiamat was highly capable but need to work on targeting system as friendlies were caught in strike zones. We came upon the Adon force as they were conducting recon and were able to take up a strategic position. They noticed the Tiamat setting up and began to take cover. The Tiamat provided covering fire while the Weasel, Dictator-B and Vanquisher advanced on their positions. The Vanquisher and Dictator-B moved up to the central building and provided covering fire while the Weasel attempted to make a flank up the left side. The Tiamat was able to heavily damage the Challenger, forcing it back under cover. The Weasel was able to fit through an archway but was unable to locate the damaged Challenger. It's rush left it out in the open and it took heavy fire from the other Adon CAVs. When the Weasel went for cover it stumbled across the Challenger. With heavily damaged systems the Weasel was unable to take on the Challenger even in close combat. The Vanquisher and Dictator-B took advantage of the diversion to move into gun range. The Dictator-B was able to get off several solid shots but was unable to shake the Wyvern's targeting system. The Wyvern and Chancellor rushed the Dictator-B to take it down. The Tiamat tried to provide some covering fire but the CAVs had come in too close and the Dictator-B was caught in the blast. It was still able to take down the Wyvern and Chancellor with help from the Vanquisher. The Challenger had repaired during the firefight and came out from cover and took down the heavily damaged Dictator-B before it could get back to cover. The Vanquisher was able to take out the Challenger but went down to direct fire from the Sultan. The Sultan attempted to get inside the Tiamat's missile range but the Tiamat was able to keep the distance long enough to land to solid salvos bring the Sultan down. All pilots and WOs were able to eject safely and were recovered 2vAQG89YNM49UPqb52N166EZ0RfY1HUK **************************. DISCLAIMER: Reaper was out of some CAVs when we were there. Linkinatutu is using the "new emperor" as the Sultan and the Rhino as the Chancellor. Linkinatutu Blue Ludo Red Before you fight, you must have terrain. Got some of Pegasus Hobby Gothic terrain. Technically its 28mm but I think it looks good with the CAVs. Plus its fun to walk the CAVs under the arches. Setting up. It begins! The top of the cathedral fell off so we left it in place and declared it rough terrain. Weasel down! Sorry for the glare. The final fight. It came down to dice. Don't know why the photos are small but you can click for the full versions.
