  1. I started a second first giant queen recently. I've done a fair amount of work on her so far but still have a long way to go.

    Hail Hydra!

I've been working on some really large dragons and some time sensitive commissions as of late. So it was nice to have a client say, "Take your time, no rush" and give me details on what they wanted. I wanted to go with some muted colors on the hyrda. I've burnt myself out on reds, greens and blues for dragon/lizard skin. So I went with a red brown instead. Namely Ruddy Leather and the Redstone triad for the upper scales and the Olive Skintone triad for the belly scales. I painted the left and right side head first, then the middle head and body, then attached them after they were done. Thanks for looking!
  3. Some time ago I picked up some Vallejo Verdigris, but I'm not sure I ever used it. This skeleton was a test case to see how the wash handled. Like most Vallejo, it was a little thick out of the bottle, but the color is right. With a some practice it'll make for easy aging of metal.
  4. This is what I'm working on at the moment. I had to start over a few time due to issues with the sculpt. Before I even got started I had to, well I didn't have to but I chose to, fix some of the more obvious problems with the sculpt using Apoxie Sculpt. Some of the mail had no detail at all, so I add it in, and there were some just terrible mold lines. I finally just decided to say forget it and move on with the painting. I was going for more of a grey skin, but ended up with a greener skin. I'm ok with where it's going, but on the next Orc I'll adjust the skin tone. Sorry the pics are a bit wonky.
  5. One of my goals this year is to work through my pile of unpainted Bones from all the kickstarters. First up, a mini that was used as a test piece and then put back to gather dust for a few years. It was painted fairly quickly using glaze technique, which helped keep me from fussing over the details. One mini off the shelf of shame (or rather, out of the plastic box of shame).

77580: Ma'al Drakar the Dragon Tyrant

My take on the classic coloring for notiamat. The process was quite a series of trial and error. This one has been taking up a lot of space on my shelf of shame and over the holiday i decided to make the final push and finish the project! these are just phone photos, i will take better shots and add them when I figure out how to get her into a light box! This is probably the largest (but not the heaviest) project I have tackled to date. i started with an assembled model and wound up tearing it apart to finish the job. I hope people enjoy her. I think it came out reasonably well. I did like the way the stone base came out and also the way the 5 colors are integrated into the body without making the dragon look patchwork or giving one color dominance. i had considered fading the wings through the 5 colors but it distracted too much from the heads. Well she is finished now, I just need to apply some dulcoat and figure out where to display her. Let me know what you think! I will post close ups later

    Bones Ogre

I finally got around to painting up one of the ogres from the last kickstarter. I went with a nice standard paint theme, nothing too suprising.

    Viridus - Autumn Monarch

Everyone, meet Viridius. He's a hefty boi. No Ma'al or Kalladrax, but still pretty big. He doesn't even fit in my light box, as you can see. I've thought a long time about how I was going to paint him up, I don't think I'm going to go with the standard green dragon look. Instead I'm going to take my inspiration from the time of year, and make him an autumn forest dragon, whose coloration changes with the forest around him. So I'll be doing him in mostly golden yellows to oranges and reds, but keeping some greenish tones as the base of scales and other places, to kind of give a reminder of the verdent glory he was before. One thing I'm choosing to see as an opportunity is that the tops of his wings are very smooth, ideal for some freehand work. The question is, what to do? Some kind of leaf like pattern, or perhaps a butterfly like eye pattern (in the leaf colors, of course) Out of the box bag he was in pretty good shape. The usual mold line cleanup, though he has some gaps that will need to be filled. I followed up with reshaping the wings a little with some boiling water. I forgot to get a complete before picture, but below you can see the before and after for the right wing I've had to fully assemble him, I don't like the way the wing joins look without greenstuff, so that's going to be the first order of business. So painting around the wings might be a chore, but it's nothing I haven't dealt with before (Although, not in recent history) I begain the gapfill on the right side, but after sticking a finger in greenstuff twice and having to flip him back to touch up the texture, I decided to call it a night and do the left side gaps later.

  13. Deathsleet, DDS2, Narthrax, Nehyrmaul, Fire Dragon, Shadow Dragon, Ebonwrath, Jabberwock, Pathfinder Read, Young Fire Dragon, Kaladrax (and all the others not currently showing up with a search for "Bones Dragon", such as Velocithrax, Cinder, and Blightfang from the Second KS campaign). What D&D/Pathfinder Size category are these? I'm having a hard time guessing, and wanted other folks' opinions. Also, if this has already been discussed, please send me a link, and we can lock this thread.

    Shub Niggurath

Started painting this THING a week ago. Wasn’t sure if I was going to like it, then about half way through the dang thing started to become on of my favorite miniatures. Constructive criticism is welcome. Easier to paint than I thought it would be. Enjoy.

    77333: Mountain Troll

I worked super hard on this guy. I think he's some of my best work. I hope everyone likes him.
  16. So yeah, been a long time. I had actually quit painting for some time. 5 or 6 years at least. I had a few false starts getting back in to to the hobby in that time. But yeah, pretty much the last several years, my brushes were dry, and my paints were unopened. Flash-forward to this past August, and I kinda got the itch again. The minis in the Nolzur's Marvelous Minis line for D&D really caught my notice and got me pretty excited. So, I bought a few, got my brushes wet again and, well, the picspam speaks for itself, I think. I have some success, some not quite as successful, but, lots of finished output since August. Also pictured: a WIP of a Blightfang mini I received as a gift a few days ago. It's nice to be painting again.

    Airbrushing Bones

So my lovely bride got me an airbrush setup for Christmas, and I played with it for the first time last night. Over all, it worked out ok, but left me with some questions that the Airbrushing: The Compendium thread didn't answer: 1. I "prime" my Bones with Brown Liner. When I tested on some Orcs last night, this seemed to work pretty decently. But given the hydrophobic nature of Bones, I didn't thin the Brown liner at all at first, then started adding a bit of water. It definitely seemed to help with the spraying as I thinned it, but I was worried about it beading up. So how do you deal with that on the first layer on Bones minis? 2. how do you guys tack down your smaller Bones minis to prime with an airbrush? I found that that the pressure (around 18-20psi) was blowing the orcs all over the place, which led me to having to prime them individually, which defeated the purpose of being able to do a bunch at once. 3. I got a sample bottle of the Stylenz primer at ReaperCon - I tried it on some CAVs, but it just beaded up. Was that an issue with me and the airbrush, or just an issue with Stylenz and Bones?

    77472: Rogaku, Oni

Hello all, this is my version of Rogaku; this is the first time I've painted a Bones mini and I found the details a bit less sharp than the metal minis I've painted till now, but maybe it's cause of the Vallejo brush primer I used on it and, probably, the zenital dry-brushing hi-light. Anyway, my choice for the skin color had been red, as the iconic Oni is, usually, red skinned, and blue for the skirt (is it a skirt? ) cause it would make contrast with the orange of the pumpkin flask; curiosity: the kanji on the flask just means "Oni" (really creative ). Green belt and jade bracer to contrast the red of the skin; and classic blue/black hair. As always the wood is somenthing I cannot achieve as I wish, it looks really flat I hope you all will like it, any comment and advice is welcome! Thank you for reading

    77434: Yeti Chieftain

It got late, so change of plans and here he is: Painted in 1 evening, using only 4 colors. I'm pretty happy with how he turned out. Colors: Splintered bone, Turkey Brown, Nightsky Blue and Blackened Brown. I was just going to use the first 3, but decided I needed something darker to finish it up.

    77106 BONES Frost Giant Jarl

This was my entry for the Reaper Fan Facebook Page Paint Your Giants Contest. This is the biggest thing I ever painted not on a canvas. The last time I entered one of these, I felt like it would have done better if the base told more of a story, so that is what I tried to achieve with this one. I wanted it to portray REVENGE! The Jarl had his left eye gouged out by a young upstart white dragon. He healed, regrouped, and hunted down the dragon to enact his revenge. I hope you like it. The final results have now been posted. He placed 4th behind some mind-blowing work. I wanted some orange on the model to play against the blue skin, for color theory. Originally, it was going to be glowing runes on the rock and skulls, but I abandoned that for the sake of time/completion. I settled with orange tones in the leather. I wasn't really sure how to get the TMM of the crown to look like a gouge, or how to make his blue skin look like a scar. I'm not entirely sold on the result, but I'm sure I'll try again some day on a different model. The Monster Manual suggests blue skin with white/gray/dirty blonde hair is the usual coloration. I tried to go to full white for the highlights of the face to make it the focal point. I wanted him to look like he was wearing a polar bear pelt, and that all the fur trim was also polar bear. I tried to make it look a little muddy on the bottom, and on his shoes. This was how I wanted to weather the inside of the bear skin, to make it look like it had that dried cracked appearance. Not sure how well it shows up in the picture. These were some WIP shots. The black and white was to figure out how to highlight the sword. I wanted the sword and stone items to look like shiny flint. I hit the sword and most of the other stone items with high gloss varnish to help sell the effect. The front and back of the sword. Finally, some more details of the base and the white dragon victim. I wanted to base the dragon as a purple in the recesses, similar to the effect going on on the cover of Hoard of the Dragon Queen module. This was the BONES Temple Dragon I sacrificed. He is smaller, but his tongue sticks out perfectly to sell the dead dragon effect. And he's not as expensive to replace as Deathsleet! I pained his eyes half-rolled into his head to complete the idea. I tried to freehand some anatomy on there: vertebral body, muscle groups, esophagus, carotid arteries/jugular veins. I also tried to be accurate with the blood spray coming from both arteries, and didn't want to go too crazy with the gore. Finally, I wanted it to look like his hot blood had melted some of the snow. Overall, this was a wild ride. The early part of the contest saw him at #2. Then he gave up some ground and sat at #3 for a long time. Then another Frost Giant (Queen) made a great surge at the end to unseat me out of #3 into 4th place. To be honest, there were so many awesome paint jobs, I'm just humbled and honored to be in the top 20. Thanks for looking. C&C Welcome.

  23. Here is my entry for the Yeti contest. A co-worker thought he'd make a good Grinch, so I went with that. A little Greenstuff to make a Santa Hat, and here were are. The gift box was tough. I mixed my own metallic blue paint, and freehanded wayyy too many snowflakes. I included other shots without the box to show off his details. Enjoy.

Finished this guy up for Ladystorm's winter contest. Fun one to work on, pretty quick paintjob between commissions.
