  1. So, I got quite a few responses when I asked about what people listen to, now I want to know what you READ! I mean we can't always be painting minis, otherwise no one would be filling up the forums with questions and pictures....ETC I am assuming that most folks have read Tolkien, I mean can you be into fantasy minis and games without having read them???? But some others that some people might or might not have read and enjoyed or hated... Heroes Die, By Mathew Woodring Stover. I used to work for B&N, and as my staff recommendation I picked this book with the claim "If you don't like this book, I will buy it back from you out of my own pocket!" I sold a lot of books, NEVER bought one back... The jacket blurb says "Day of the Jackal meats Lord of the Rings!" Believe it! Three Hearts and Three Lions, By Poul Anderson Just finished it for the Nth time, great book Thieves World, Edited by Robert Aspirin This is a 12 book shared universe series. Chaosium Games made a multi game supplement based on the first 1 or 2 books. The cover art of the first books is AWESOME! The Eternal Champion Cycle, By Michael Moorcock This includes Erekose, Elric, Corum, Hawkmoon, etc Really something every fantasy buff should read.... MM also writes music with Blue Oyster Cult, and has /had a band called Hawkwind. A very nice British Gentleman! Name of the Wind, By Patrick Rothfuss The best new fantasy author to come along in a very long time! Read it, and the sequel, "A Wise Man's Fears" Jack of Shadows, By Roger Zelazny Most folks have read about Amber, This book is as good as the original Ambers... I will add more as I find time... Gotta paint now! 8) George
  2. Okay prepare for lengthy thought..... (Before it dies of neglect and loneliness....) Whilst on the hangouts over this weekend, the old "dungeon romps" that we used to do in these threads was mentioned, I believe by Adept Legacy. As we batted the Idea around, we wondered if people would be interested in painting up their "Forum Personae" for use in a diorama. It would go something like this, (Maybe) People find a mini that they feel represents them self in their "forum personae" IE A Drow Elf for myself, the axe toting Barbarian with an INT dump stat for Ub3r, a Jedi Hamster for David B, etc (you folks get the idea!) and paint it up by ReaperCon 2017. (That would give us over a year.....) Someone (Some group?) that builds terrain, and lives close enough to Reaper HQ to be able to transport it there, could build some dungeon terrain of various sorts to place all of the minis on as our erratic, eclectic, eccentric adventuring party..... (Hopefully with a mushroom patch or two.... ) (Size to be determined by number of folks that 'sign up') Everyone brings (or mails for those that can't attend) their contribution to the thing, and it is set up there for us all to look and smile and remember things.... Then, everything gets donated to Reaper for display in their corporate HQ, as a THANK YOU! from all of us for hosting such a wonderful Insane Asylum forum for us all to play in..... Would anyone be interested in doing something like this????? And does Reaper have a place that they could display it? Maybe it could become a yearly thing, that new folks bring "Themselves" to add in, and if folks change their personae, they could change their mini too! I can only imagine some of the possibilities.... (Certain 'people' sneaking and peeking from air vents for example.....) George
  3. I have read some really outstanding and excellent writings by members...I don't know if this has already been done someplace (if so, I have not found it)...I know that there are talented artists among our members...I would love to see some of their art works...both from advanced professional/semi-professional artists as well as the novice doodler/sketcher. I am not an artist by any means, but I have done some amateur b/w pen & ink stuff for varied private usage! Are there any out there who would like to display there work(s)? I would really love to see them! Paul (Catdancer)
  4. So, I'm heading to Connecticon next month; a multi-genre convention about 30 minutes from home. While there I plan on getting some gaming in, most likely some Pathfinder Society and some of the 5th edition Adventure League. I have never actually played either one of these games in a con setting. I've downloaded and read the player guides for each and have a general grasp of the rules: Make a character, join a level appropriate game and have fun. Beyond that I'm not sure. Does anyone have any advice for a first timer? Anything in particular to avoid? Recommended classes, factions, and so forth?
  5. Oi everyone! My fiancé has given me the BESTEST (yes, bestest!) birthday gift EVER: over 30 miniatures which arrived just yesterday, along with a sample bottle of MSP paint (thank you Reaper packaging team)! :D I finally feel like I'm getting serious about this hobby. This, and I've watched easily over 5 hours of YouTube vids just about painting techniques... Let's be honest, I'm no professional, and I'm not using professional tools (except for my brushes). But this is fun! I'll be posting my work here, and if you have some tips especially for the scenery, I'll be glad to read it. I just bought a bit of stuff to glue to my bases so they don't look dull, and I'll take any advice I can! For the time being, here is a dire boar (#02527) I finished not too long ago. I did glue on some lichen-grass thingies on the base to try it. I'm pretty happy about the contrasts on this one, I finally managed to make a wash that looked good. Oh and sorry about the lighting, I don't have a lightbox or anything, so it's my cell phone and a light bulb doing the job. ;) I'll be posting pictures of my barbarian girl soon, just finished her two days ago! Feel free to give honest feedback! And for those of you interested, here's what I use for all my minis: - Rosemary & Co. brushes Series 33, sizes 2, 0 and 3/0 (along with old brushes for drybrushing) - Americana craft acrylic paints - Delta Creative gloss & matte varnish - Krylon grey primer - my brand new set of jewelers' magnifying LED eyeglasses (eBay $7!)
