  1. I'm a bit of a glutton for punishment, so have managed to talk myself into another rainbow dragon... Since I have ol' Pathfinder Red sitting in the Drawer of Doom and no real plans for him, I thought I'd randomize him (not that I don't have enough other projects that haven't been finished (or even started)).. So, here goes: 3 Star challenge on Pathfinder Red (#89001) Primary : Blush Pink (although I might substitute in Breast Cancer Pink since I have 3 bottles of that from last month!) Secondary: Brilliant Green (needs to be ordered or fetched from the FLGS - I have Forest Green but that's too dark to match, i think) Tertiary: Heather Blue (do not have this, but do have a Sample bottle from a past order that is very close and will be used in its place.. I smidged some paint on a sheet of paper for comparison and have decided that Blush Pink is much brighter than BCPink, so I'll probably use the Blush (unless I decide to go thematic again and donate this fellow to a survivor since I know a few). Also, Forest Green is indeed way too dark to substitute in for Brilliant Green.. Here he is in all his boxed plasticky glory!
  2. So I've finally joined. Ebonwrath was the first dragon I managed to grab from my pile of Bones. Now assembled and brown line primed. Here are the results, based on my modified list. 15: Alien Goo, main 3: HD Fireball Orange, secondary 17: Solid Blue, accent So this is YOUR doing Pezler! Guess I'll try for the 3* challenge. It'll feel like my early days of painting when I owned a very limited palette.

  13. The Sith Revolt He walked calmly into the dark chamber, the Emperor's Throne Room and saw his master, Lord Vader, standing before the throne deep in thought as he stared out at the star that his space station had just made into a super nova. Darth Cerrak quietly pulled the light saber from his belt and unleashed a powerful blast of the force at his master! Darth Vader was ready for the blast and had been expecting his apprentice to one day try to destroy him, he wouldn't be a Sith if that wasn't part of his personality and how Vader trained him. He easily deflected the blast with one of his own. Laughing through his mask, Darth Vader pulled forth his red light saber and proceeded to try to force-choke the young upstart... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is my entry into the Spaceship Superstar Contest! Figures: Zargun, Assassin from Guild of Harmony with Karick-Dar's right hand and Darth Vader from West End Games Star Wars Miniatures Materials: Metal Diorama Materials: Poster board Emperor's Throne: Scratch built using Super Sculpey Firm and Greenstuff. WIP Thread can be found here. Thank you to everyone in the WIP thread for your advice, comments, compliments and critiques. I couldn't have gotten it done without you all! C&C are welcomed and appreciated. EDIT: I fixed the diorama to lessen the open spaces after comments below. I also removed from the removable bases and placed directly into the scene. I think it works better and looks cleaner now, but will still appreciate any C&C that you fine artists have for me. Thanks!
  14. Anyone know the names of the winners in the painting contest this year at Origins?
  15. The Story - Two years ago, a friend, who used to run a gaming store, asked if I wanted all his old minis left from when he closed the store, since they were just taking up space. As I have no willpower, I said sure. He said there might be 3 or 4 Diamond boxes worth. There ended up being 9 boxes... Fast forward to last year, when the Kickstarters started rolling in. I now have even more minis I will never really have time to paint. So what to do with all these minis in the boxes? Well, I could sell some on ebay or something , but that sounds like work. So how about I give some away? I started by giving Cartmanis's son a few figs to paint. Then used some blister packs as packaging material for Secret Sophie. Still an awful lot of stuff, running out of room for KS stuff. How about I do a contest? A Sci-Fi contest, because I've got a ton of Sci-Fi stuff, I really like Sci-Fi stuff, and I don't see enough Sci-Fi stuff being done on the site. So, here we are. Paint up some cool Sci-Fi stuff and, if you place, you'll get to pick out some (hopefully) cool Sci-Fi stuff and I'll send it to you. TL;DR - I have way too many Sci-Fi figs that I will never paint. Paint up something Sci-Fi and maybe I'll send you some. Contest rules: -- the theme is Science Fiction. Any Sci-Fi is good. But if you want to do cowboys, they had better be Space Cowboys, and there coats had better be brown. -- entries can be of any manufacturer, or sculpt your own. -- any figure which was painted and finished between May 1st and the deadline is eligible -- the deadline for entries is September 7, 2014 at 11:59 pm CST -- you may enter as many times as you like, but only one prize per person will be awarded -- each entry needs to be uploaded to the appropriate thread. Please attach your entries using the forum uploading feature or hotlink from the Inspiration Gallery. We want to make sure they're visible at all times. -- you may submit between one and four images of each Squad or Single Figure entry and up to six images for Diorama. They do not need to be stitched into a single image file. -- you are allowed to enter miniatures that will also be entered into other contests that might overlap this one. -- the judges or Reaper reserves the right to remove entries if deemed inappropriate, but we're pretty laid back here and this is just to cover our butts. -- the judges and Reaper can clarify and amend rules at will. Categories: There are three categories, Diorama, Squad and Single Figure Diorama: A Diorama is defined as two or more figures on a scenic base that helps to tell as story. Judging Criteria -- The over all possible score for each entry is 100 points. The judges will look at the following when deciding: Composition: layout, how well it tells a story, etc -- 50 points Painting Skill -- 25 points Overall Presentation of the miniature (basing, colors used, and so on) -- 25 pts Squad: A Squad is defined as 4 or more figures painted as a cohesive unit. Judging Criteria -- The over all possible score for each entry is 100 points. The judges will look at the following when deciding: Cohesion: how well the unit ties together -- 50 points Painting Skill -- 25 points Overall Presentation of the miniature (basing, colors used, and so on) -- 25 pts Single Figure: A Single Figure is just that, one fig, any size. A vehicle with a driver/rider would be a single fig, but a vehicle with a crew would better fit in squad or diorama. Judging Criteria -- The over all possible score for each entry is 50 points. The judges will look at the following when deciding: Painting Skill -- 25 points Overall Presentation of the miniature (basing, colors used, and so on) -- 25 pts The Prizes: The items I have available are mostly VOID and Warzone figures, including a number of box sets. There may also be a few Sci-Fi items from Star Wars and some really old TSR Gamma World stuff. I will likely split the items up into categories, so a winner may get to pick one from the "boxed sets" list and X from the "Blister packs" list (for example). I reserve the right to throw more stuff in the box if there is room after packing your picks. Picks will be done by where you placed, in the order of Diorama, Squad and then Single. So 1st place Diorama will pick first, 1st place Squad will pick second and so forth. The prizes in each category: 1st place - picks: 2 Large and 20 Small 2nd place - picks: 1 Large and 16 Small 3rd place - picks: 1 Large and 12 Small lucky drawing - picks: 1 Large and 8 Small Best Reaper - Reaper provided award for the best all Reaper entry - $15 Reaper Gift Certificate, plus I'm going to throw in 4 Small picks (just cause I'm like that) See attached pdf for complete list of picks available. contest_minis_list.pdf Image Enhancement: -- digital enhancement ("Photoshopping") of your entry is strictly prohibited. -- no clone brush, healing brush, airbrush, or other brush work. Fix your paint with paint, not with Photoshop. -- no adding or removing background elements from the image -- cropping, global color balance, and global level adjustments are allowed ("global" means "the entire image." You may not "pop" colors by only selecting some areas for level adjustment. )
  16. Okay, so I really wanted to participate in the Painting Excuses: Paint Into A Picture Challenge contest but I just couldn't find the time to get anything done ... until today ... the day before the deadline. Well, after some dithering, I decided I'd still give it the old college try and started working on it today. Unfortunately, I'm probably not going to complete it in time to submit it to the contest since my plan has always involved major mods to my KS1 Bones version of 03547: Juliette, Female Wizard and, as I'd never actually used Green Stuff before, I didn't realize how long it takes for it to cure enough to be sanded and painted (4-5 hours, according to the instructions that came in the tube, with 24 hours to reach full hardness). In any case, since I'm waiting for things to cure up, I figure I would start this thread and post the photo's of what I've already done. First, here's the photo that the finished Juliette is to be placed into. It's kind of large, so I'm hiding it behind a spoiler tag. What I'm doing is converting Juliette into a Japanese Geisha Fan Dancer. My first step was to cut off most of her hair and then use green stuff to turn it into something more like a Geisha's hair style. Then I removed the scroll in her right hand and the scroll pouch hanging off the right side of her belt and used green stuff to smooth out the rough patches left behind. Finally, I decided to give her a high collar and change the top of her blouse from a "keyhole" to be an open, low cut neck line. Next I created two fans for her to hold. I did this by using short wire segments to serve as the ribs of the fan with a thin layer of green stuff laid over them and sculpted to suggest an open fan. So that's what I'm waiting to cure up, but I believe I have shortened the wait a little. I found some advice online noting that green stuff cures faster when in an warmer environment so one can accelerated the process by warming things up a little, even by just aiming a desk lamp at it from a close position. It also noted that some professional sculptors create a little "green stuff oven" using an old coffee can and a desk lamp. Not having a coffee can to hand, I McGyvered something together by lining an empty plastic container with aluminum foil (shiny side visible), putting the figure and the fans in there and then placing my desk lamp right above it. So hopefully things will have cured enough for painting in maybe another half an hour to an hour (I stopped "fiddling" with the various green stuff bits around 5:00 PM PST and it's 7:31 PM PST as I'm typing, so two and a half hours have already
  17. Hi guys, I'm not sure if this is the right place for my post. I am the active mod of reddit's minipainting board. We're having a little paint contest for the month of February, and I just thought some people here would be interested, since at least a third of the posts on /r/minipainting are actually reaper figures. Bones are very popular. Here's the link. The theme is "deep blue" -- basically, it's a contest to see who can paint the best blue miniature. Thanks for your interest! See you and around the boards.
  18. Moving this discussion to it's own thread.. so far Demons and giants have been discussed..

  20. March Miniature Challenge

Hey everybody, just wanted to give you guys a quick update on whats going on over here, before we jump into the miniature challenge segment. We are nearing completion of our first set of sculpts for our commissions and out online store. Also we recently purchased out very own pressure casting chamber and we have all the mold making materials on order. As we begin winding down the February Miniature Challenge, with just over 4 hours left to submit. We would like to thank all of you who participated , you did a wonderful job on your entries, and we will begin grading them soon. Within the next few days you should see your name and the amount of points you have earned, appear on our website, under the painter standings. Link in signature. We would now like to announce the theme for the March Miniature Challenge. This month your challenge is to paint up a miniature to represent your favorite console RPG videogame character. Whether it be Cloud from Final Fantasy 7, or your favorite character from the Dragon Quest series or any other Japanese RPG. We wish you all luck and cannot wait to see the entries start flooding in. Please note that characters licensed by any D&D game do not qualify for the theme of a video game character, the idea behind these contests is not to just paint a mini, it is to creatively interpret a miniature to represent a character that it clearly is not. (ie: cloud and link are acceptable entries, Drizzt and Conan are not) if you are in doubt , ask before you start an entry. If you decide to go against this rule, you will still get points , however they will be greatly reduced. If for whatever reason, you are not a fan of console RPG videogames, you may choose a character from any other videogame you like. And remember to take plenty of pictures of your progress, and provide a picture reference to the character you are painting. For complete rules and guidelines please follow the link below. http://www.rpgstandard.com/apps/blog/show/23179761-rpgstandard-s-challenge-rules-and-guidelines All submissions are due before midnight on April 1st Good Luck and Happy Painting!
  21. A new year and a new Contest. People liked the theme based scoring we did with the Halloween contest so I'm bringing that back, to a degree, but don't worry for those of you who don't like themes as we have an open category where anything will be acceptable, as long as it's Reaper. Also, to encourage more people to enter, we've got a random drawing for a prize in each category! So even if you're not the best painter in the world you have the chance to win something! So without further adieu: Categories Theme: Winter wonderland or horror-land! This should be fairly self explanatory. For this category there will be extra scoring based off of this theme and they are not lenient at all. Just throwing snow on a base will not net you many points. This category is not limied to a single figure but does not need to be a diorama. Single Figure Decorative base: My favorite category. There is no theme to this at all but still requires some work to make an over all presentation. This is not a diorama but is intended to be more then just some basic flocking. For this category judges will be extra scoring based off the base. Open Single Figure: This is a free for all. Enter whatever you like, as long as it's reaper. The judging is also more lax as it's more like the original Painting Excuses contests where a judge scores based off if they like the figure but aren't required to look for\at anything in particular. Prizes (each category): 1st--$50 reaper online gift card 2nd--$25 reaper online gift card 3st--$15 reaper online gift card Drawing -- $15 reaper online gift card General Rules: All entries must be made by Reaper. Entries must be in by February 25 at 11:59 pm MST Enter as many times as you want but only one entry per person per category can win. Each entry needs to be uploaded to the appropriate thread. Please attach your entries using the forum uploading feature or hotlink from the Inspiration Gallery. 24. We are back for round two. Reaper has once again offered to provide prizes for our little painting shindig so lets get started. First off we are changing the categories a bit from last time as we thought there wasn't enough focus for Diorama so this time around we're making that part themed based and so large based figures are being moved under Fantasy and Non-Fantasy. So our categories are: Single Fantasy (Pathfinder, Dark Heaven Legends, Warlord, Bones, LJC, Mouselings) -- Large base and fancy bases go here as well Single Non-Fantasy (Chornoscope, Savage Worlds, CAV) -- Large base and fancy bases go here as well Diorama – The theme is "Monster Hunter". Unlike last time we will require there to be more then one figure in this category. Prizes (each category): 1st--$50 reaper online gift card 2nd--$25 reaper online gift card 3st--$15 reaper online gift card General Rules: All entries must be made by Reaper. Entries must be in by September 3rd at 11:59 pm MST Enter as many times as you want but only one entry per person per category can make it to the final voting round. Each entry needs to be uploaded to the appropriate thread. Please attach your entries using the forum uploading feature or hotlink from the Inspiration Gallery. We want to make sure they're visible at all times. Link to Fantasy thread Link to Non-Fantasy thread Link to Diorama thread [*]You may submit between one and four images of each entry. They do not need to be stitched into a single image file. Diorama entries should have between two and six images. (If you can catch it all in just one picture, is it REALLY a diorama?) [*]Digital enhancement ("Photoshopping") of your entry is strictly prohibited. No clone brush, healing brush, airbrush, or other brush work. Fix your paint with paint, not with Photoshop. No adding or removing background elements from the image If you add a logo or a watermark Reaper cannot use your image in their gallery. Note that if your image is selected for the Reaper gallery, you will be credited by name under the image. Cropping, global color balance, and global level adjustments are allowed ("global" means "the entire image." You may not "pop" colors by only selecting some areas for level adjustment. [*]You are allowed to enter miniatures and dioramas that will also be entered into other contests that might overlap ours. [*]We are not going to police your entries as to when they were started\finished. We hope that people would paint something for this contest and not just enter something they finished a while ago as this is a fun and friendly contest. [*]The judges or Reaper reserves the right to remove entries if deemed inappropriate, but we're pretty laid back here and this is just to cover our butts. [*]The judges and Reaper can clarify and amend rules at will. Basing and Diorama Rules You do not have to use Reaper produced stuff for your bits for basing or in the Diorama. Voting Rules Voting will be done using the Instant-runoff voting system by our judges. http://en.wikipedia....t-runoff_voting
  25. I'm so excited to share this news: Game Empire Painting Tournament March 25, 2012, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 7051 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, #306 San Diego, CA 92117 858-576-1525 Cost: FREE!!!!! Prize pool includes store credit, brushes from Army Painter, cool stuff from Games Workshop, Reaper minis, and more! Basic supplies, minis, basing materials, and drinks will be free to participants. Da Roolz: Minis from any company, current or defunct, are acceptable. Mini must be primed and assembled when registered. (This rule can be bent, but will waste your precious painting time.) Primed and assembled minis will be made available in the “up to 28 mm categories”, while supplies last. Pre-painted minis not accepted for this tournament. Please register with a monitor before beginning to apply color. We will number the bottom of your mini. Use your stuff, use stuff from the supplies. It’s all good. Seasoned pros are likely to have their own supplies and should leave the communal supplies for the amateurs. We’re not sticklers, it’s just good manners. Don’t be a jerk. If you’re nasty to the other competitors, you may be asked to leave. Even young’uns are expected to have good manners. Basing: (That means adding cool stuff, like rocks and sticks to the floor of your mini.) This isn’t necessary, but highly encouraged. And it sure makes your mini look awesome… Due to their overwhelming awesomeness, Game Empire employees are not allowed to enter this contest. Too bad you rock. Categories: Young Bloods: up to and including age 14—must have ID or a guardian to verify age. No professionals. Prizes awarded to first, second, and third places. (all sizes) Pro: If you have ever been paid to paint minis, this is your category. Two size categories: a.) up to 28mm, and b.) over 28mm. Yes, Virginia, there are professionals under age 15. Get over it. They might just kick your hiney. Amateur: No professionals. Two size categories: a.) up to 28mm, and b.) over 28mm. (If you have ever been paid to paint minis, enter in the pro category. We expect you to be honest about this.) People’s Choice: All entries from other categories may be submitted. Anyone may enter. This is a special award judged by the public. Schedule Registration is all day, beginning at 10 a.m. Please register all minis and hang on to the claim ticket we give you! 4:45 p.m. All entries must be completed and ready for judging. 5 p.m. Judging begins. You need not be present to win… but your mini does! Minis will then be placed in our chess case for People’s Choice Award. This will be voted on by the public (one vote per person—duh!) over the next week (March 25-31) and tallied April 2. Winners will be announced April 2. (Yes, you can vote for your own mini. Yes, kids can vote too—it ain’t the presidency.) Our fabulous Judges: 2012 Broadside Bash Award-winning Allan Pyle Golden Demon award-winner Bob Felix. (Subject to availability, but it looks good!) Judges’ decisions are final. These guys are pros and know what they’re looking for. The judges reserve the right to move an entry into a different category if they deem it appropriate. COA Clause: Once in our care, we will take special care of your minis, but we can accept no responsibility for loss or damage to individual entries. Models are entered into the competition at the artist’s own risk. If they come alive and fly around the store, we’ll talk later. Rules lawyers should talk to Desiree about rule changes BEFORE the tournament. Suggestions about future tournaments will be given consideration. This is Desiree’s first shot at it, so give her a break. If this topic should be moved to a different forum, no prob. This was my best guess!
