  1. I recently got my ReaperCon goodies from my convention buddy. Since I caught a cold right before coming home from Kuwait, this mini felt especially relatable to me. I looked over Buglips' and Guindyloo's versions of the mini, and they informed how I went a bit. Guindyloo's eye in particular was something I wanted to try replicating. I think I did an okay job. I should have picked a lighter color of blue, though. The pupil doesn't really stand out from the iris. My tissue box's lines ended up not being quite as clean as I would've liked. I need to practice my freehand more.
  2. 01588: Ungorth, Cthon Summoner

Hey all! Got this resin fig at ReaperCon 2016 and decided to base him using a Basius basing pad with some swampy/murky/creepy terrain. My goal was to emphasize that this disciple is unconcerned with his cleanliness, and is a deadly foe. I managed to work up a color scheme that speaks to faded Christmas colors which led me into an adventure idea wherein this summoner is bringing a twisted version of Krampus into existence for the holidays
  3. Hello fine people (and other assorted things) of the Reaper forum! Continuing in our project of teaming up to show you two different methods to go about painting the same miniature, Buglips and I decided that we would do a WIP thread for Con Crud, Convention Zombie from the 2017 Reapercon swag bag! He's a great little figure, sculpted by Gene Van Horne, that we thought we could have some fun with. This will be our second shared WIP thread in this series of ours, in case you missed it, check out our first one where we painted Thanis the Bonecaller: As with that one, I will be covering my usual method of painting for display, and Buglips will be approaching the figure with his own usual "fast-but-decent method." As with the last one, Buglips' method will be much faster than mine will be and you'll get to see where our two styles diverge. We will be sharing our own issues, thoughts and methods with you in the hopes that someone will find such things useful. So on to the mini! Here's my Con Crud, fresh out of his blister: I prepped him in my usual way, with some diamond files to grind off the mold lines and bit of flash that you can see on his outstretched foot and hand. He has some notable mold lines through his hair and back and down the left (his left) side of his face. I'll show you throughout the process how I'll tackle those. So here he is after I primed him with Reaper's Brush-On Primer in white, thinned down with some water. As usual, I only did one thin coat so as not to obscure the details on him and I took a couple of additional shots from different angles so you can see some of the mold lines that I'll need to work on a little more down the road.
  4. Howdy, For my twelfth day of International Mini Painting Month I present Ungorth, Cthon Summoner - Reaper Con 2016 exclusive... Kev!
  5. Kev!'s 77410: Foo Dog

Howdy, Here is a model I painted at ReaperCon 2017... Also the Overlords Casualty Marker, Kev!
  6. Savonarola - Fire Mage

Entry four of four at ReaperCon. Another great sculpt from Greebo Games. I had a lot of fun with the flames, and was my first go with wet blending. Comments and Critiques welcome.
  7. Kenobo

This was an old Soda Pop miniature that I think I received as a promo. It's been setting in a box for 10+ years as one of those models that was waiting for me to be "good enough". He was a blast to paint, and I was kind of amazed at how well flesh tones worked for hair color. Entry three of four at ReaperCon. Comments and Critiques welcome.
  8. The Dragon Queen

This is the end result of my WIP thread This was the first bust I had painted, and the second of four entries at ReaperCon. Comments and Critiques welcome.
  9. I Painted A...Thing

Despite life being awry, Number One Son and I made it up to ReaperCon for a few hours. One of his favorite features of it is the Paint and Take table - he's really beginning to get into mini painting, and tries to finish at least one while we're there. As I am a social wreck who's very set in his ways, I generally hate to paint away from my comfy setup at home (even though it's been a while since that setup has been used). However, as NOS was asking for some tips, I figured I'd need to lead by example and eventually painted...this... He's pretty rough, but hey - he's a ratman, innit? Fairly fun, simple sculpt - easy enough to do even with unfamiliar brushes and less than optimal lighting. AND I actually managed to paint something! Think I'll add him to my "dungeon crawl critters" box. Time to get back to thinking up excuses why I haven't worked on my Chariot of Fear in the "Works in Progress" forum :D
  10. Whilst sitting in class with Bob and Julie, they asked us what we would like to see taught next year.. Then I was asked if I could post it on the forums... So here you go.... Try to keep it real.....
  11. The Adventure... ReaperCon 2017

See you all soon in TX!
  12. Knarthex Paints the 'Girlblin'

So, The very first mini I pulled out of the BOGW when I got it, was a Malifaux mini.... As soon as I saw it, I knew how I had to paint it! So I give you @Sylverthorne the Girlblin! Hope you like it!!!!!! George Abbreviated WIP here (Didn't have time to record everything with the need to get it done for Wednesday.....)
  13. Right, so I finally decided to do a WiP on this guy, mainly in the hopes to get some good feedback on the painting process. This will be one of my Reapercon (in the Open category, being as it is a scratchbuild). First off, some older pics going back a few months, showing where I started from. I started by sculpting a few faces and picked one that I thought would do the job. Then I built a basic armature, established a pose and then began fleshing it out. I'm afraid I didn't get any more WiP shots of the sculpting after this, so on to the finished figure (pre painting that is). Here is the final figure prior to painting, complete with scenic base. And because I really would like to show off all the work that went into it, here are a lot of detail shots of the various elements. The discarded helmet was a little bit of a trick, as I wanted it to actually be hollow. I dealt with it by sculpting the basic shape on the end of another tool, then carefully pulling it off and carving out the face plate and widening the rest of the interior. The backpack and pistol frame were stacked sheet styrene, with added details in greenstuff and wire. The base was just a couple of cutup corks with greenstuff textured over it. Next up is painting. Digging around online for inspiration I came across this image, which is supposedly of a 1950s era US Navy pressure suit. I liked the olive drab and beige combination (though I may skip the white helmet), and decided I would go with something similar, but with warmer colors. The palette I wound up choosing for the basic flight suit is below. For some reason the special edition colors have become some of my favorites. Carnival Purple was a special edition paint for Reapercon '13 (I think), and has become one of my go to colors for shadowing, while Pumpkin Orange has become another one of my mainstays. Here is the figure after the first round of painting. I went in with the intention of giving the suit a much ruddier look that was the case in the prototype (hence the Pumpkin Orange), but tn the end the orange really dominated the palette (which doesn't really bother me, so long as the end result looks good), The figure was primarily bascoated with black primer, while the head was done in white. I don't recall exactly how much time it took me to get from there to what you see below, but I think it was close to two hours or so. Whatcha' think so far? I've always been better with a hobby knife than a paint brush, and this year I'm really anxious to up my game a bit. Any and all input is welcome!
  14. I made a SNAFU and double booked myself for the Paint by Die Roll. The great kaiju has used his powers of internet and corrected it. However the Friday event had to be canceled. My apologies to everyone who was so kind to preregister. We have scheduled 2 new Paint by Die Roll events, One Thursday and one Saturday. We also added Survival Speed Paints after dinner every night. They are on the schedule and can be reserved. Again my apologies for messing up people's schedules! ~Ludo
  15. So my painter's entry is done.... Provided of course, that no one sees anything that I mucked up.... Kill The Maggots! Thanks for looking and commenting! Wip here G
  16. Mina Splinterheart (ReaperCon Exclusive)

Well, since Ron has posted pictures of her on FB now, I suppose I'm free to share Mina with the world! She was a very fun miniature for me, though she provided a couple of challenges along the way. First, I originally worried that her attire would look a little too dressy on top/ragged on bottom, but I hope that the striped pants (which are always quite enjoyable to paint) help tie her together and make her the right level of ragged-fancy all around (like a pirate is supposed to be!). Second, believe it or not, this would appear to be one of the darkest skintones I have ever attempted, so I didn't have a tried-and-true recipe to fall back on. Nonetheless, I think things turned out okay, though (with all skintones) I really need to push my use of different shades of blue, green, and etc. to really bring life into the shadows. Better skintones have been something of a quest for me recently, and so I'll have to continue to practice, but each new miniature seems to be a step in the right direction! I hope you like her!!! And remember, even if you can't pick her up in person at ReaperCon, she should be available during the convention through Reaper's website! Thanks for looking!
  17. 2017 ReaperCon Forumite Bingo

Hey all! Last year I did this via PM, and it was a PITA. So this year I will be doing it out in the open. So, those of you who were on the cards last year, or got a card last year know how the game works, so you can skip the next paragraph. What is Forumite Bingo? It's a convention game I came up with last year and was well received so I will do it again this year. The game is just like what a bingo game would be, but rather than calling out numbers to fill your card, you must go around and introduce yourself to members of the forum who are on your card. Say hi to them, and you can cross their box off. Once you've made "bingo", return to me for your Bingo ribbon. Blackout isn't required, but several people did it for the grins. And there's nothing to 'prove' you met those who you have said you have, just the honor system. You only punish yourself by cheating yourself out of meeting wonderful people. Last year there were more volunteers than spaces, so not every one was on every card, and hopefully there will be enough volunteers again this year. It made for a good variety. So, this thread is not for signing up to receive a card to play. This is a signup for people who are willing to be on a card. The cards will be freely handed out at the convention. Just come find me, and potentially my wife who may have my materials. Be aware, volunteering to be on the card will mean that complete strangers will be coming up to meet you, and they may not be actually signed up and be on this forum. That happened more often than I thought it would last year. If that makes you uncomfortable, then reconsider volunteering. So, a bit few ground rules: Last year I excluded all the Reaper peeps since they are all pretty accessible. The game's purpose is to meet the less visible and vocal. I will continue that. Sorry peeps, we love ya, but I feel that's best. The free square in the middle will be me, since everybody has to meet me to get the card it seems the fairest way. You must be going to ReaperCon to be on the card please! And if possible, the full Thursday to Saturday at least. It's unfair to those whose card you are on if you don't show, or are a Saturday only person. I will not exclude you if you are a Saturday only (or similar) limited attendee. However, people who have you on their cards will get to cross you off without meeting you if you aren't there when they need you for bingo. By replying with the information below, you are giving your permission to use the picture provided and your name provided, and to be inundated with people introducing themselves to you. Once I've printed the cards (much closer to the con than I want), they are set in stone. I can't remove people from the cards, and they're a bit pricy to just toss. Plans change, life happens, and if you become a no-show, you simply become a gimme square and are crossed off automatically by those who need your square. It already happened last year, and well, it will probably happen again. We'll just roll along in those cases. Signups will be open from now until October 1st. That gives me a mere two weeks to randomize the cards and have them printed on card stock. I'll get a mod to lock this thread on that date, and once the thread is locked, no more volunteers will be accepted. One does not need to be very active on these forums to be on the card, but it helps people to recognize you. But I will not turn away anybody that isn't very active if they really want to be on the card. If there's a question about any of these numbered questions, please quote the text since the numbering is automatic and I can't control it if there's an insertion. I will update these rules as questions and issues come up. All ready to sign up? Good! Here's what you need to do. Reply to this thread with: The name you want to use. I prefer your forum handle, so people might have some idea of who you are. They can always write your real name across the square as a way of crossing you off. What picture you wish to use for your square. Again, I prefer your forum picture, but if you are someone who changes it often, I might grab one that isn't current so having you explicitly give me one helps. What days you will be at ReaperCon. I'm planning to put the days you are there on the square somehow, and this will help us know if your are there that day or not. I'm only using Thursday thru Sunday, with Wednesday as a simple bonus day. I think that's it for now. See you all in a month!

  19. Hall of Fame Update & Bios

Please help me with who was the 2016 Hall of Fame Inductee. The Reapercon link https://reapercon.com/halloffame is missing that and the Bios for Jason Wiebe (Gwydion Green) and Debbie Lewis (Dancin' Debbie) . Thanks for any help you can provide. BTW NOT trying to be hyper critical I know web design is terdious and upkeep is difficult the dropdown menu could use a link to the HALL OF FAME. If I am a pest or wrong please forgive me I am ACD and also just had eye surgery.
  20. Hey, @ub3r_n3rd, here's the figure that I managed to finish. The top clear coat makes it a bit shiny, but I've got it under harsh lights. With the very zoomed in picture I'm not exactly happy with the shading on the right hand side where it transitions from light to dark in the middle fold, but that was vexing me for a long time. It's the way I want it to look, but I'm not sure everybody's eye will interpret the shape that I wanted to illustrate. There's also a woodgrain painted on the bow, but it is very subtle and doesn't look to show up here. I guess that should have been something a bit more stark. Really feel that she's missing an arrow in her hand, since she seems to want to be nocking an arrow, but there's nothing there. Need to work on my eyes for the next figure, but that's a common refrain.
  21. Lighting @ reapercon

Being my first reapercon I was wondering what lighting at classes is like. Does bringing your own work in terms of better lighting and is electrical available. Did search first but did not find a thread. Thanks in advance.
  22. So I decided that I needed to get off of my deceased donkey and paint something for Reapercon, and decided to paint myself! I say this because the miniature looks like me in one of my Ren Faire outfits.... Started with the eyes, GW Scorched brown, WC One Coat Beige, GW Snot Green, then began the ski with SC 75 Arabic Shadow... Hopefully, I will be able to get this done by con.... (This is a cropped pic from GenCon 09 so you can see what I mean....) yes it isn't exact, but....
  23. Hakuna Matata WIP

For one of my Open pieces for the ReaperCon Master Open, I am going to recreate a realistic version of the classic log scene from Disney's The Lion King. To this end, I am going to use the lion cub I sculpted for Dark Fable and the Warhog and Meerkat I sculpted for Reaper. I'm not actually sure which meerkat I am going to use, all will need conversion: The decision really depends on how "realistic" I go with it. In the movie, Timon marches along, human like. In reality, meerkats scamper on all fours. So I am torn between being true to reality or true to the movie. But I can leave that decision point for a bit. I cleaned the other two minis and removed their bases. I did some damage to both in the process. Also, I found some sculpting errors I had made on the Warthog (it was only my 5th sculpt, and I was pretty green back then). I cleaned up the minis with some re-sculpt in mind and made spikes on their feet. Here they are ready for sculpting: Last night, I re-sculpted Simba's feet (not happy with the middle one). I also started making leaves, which I intend to cast many times over in pewter in my foundry. I plan on making lots of leaves, ferns, mushrooms, and such. This will give me lots of basing stuff to put around the log, and I can replicate as much as I need. Have a great day, Andy
  24. Forumite Pictures @ Reapercon

So we have discussed different times and days as to what is the best one to take the "Forumite" group pictures, and there has been no real consensus as to when / where/ how.... Thought- Take one EACH DAY after the dinner meal before everyone retreats into the Kraken bottles at the firepit? what does everyone think?
  25. I'm not sure how here reads Figure Painter Magazine, but for those interested, there is a nice write-up on ReaperCon 2016 in the current issue (#44). This issue also contains an interview with Marike Reimer. Worth the read.
