  1. I'm starting to get lost here, so I figured I'd make an index of stuff I've posted. Many of these are loaded with enough pics and text that they're almost mini-tutorials. Questions and comments are always welcome. If you don't get a reply within a couple days, find me on Facebook, or add me on Battle.net (Xumenicus#1118). 89006: Seoni, Iconic Sorceress

This one was about doing some more experimenting, such as: Painting eyes before skin (I think I'll keep doing this) Painting the base for the eyes with a color instead of just black (I went with purple, and the fact that I feel compelled to say that probably shows how ineffective it was at looking like some colored eyeliner instead of a black outline) Painting the base early (I don't think I'll keep doing this, unless it's for a specific reason with certain minis) Trying to create a fair skin tone with warm undertones (I liked what I was able to do for this) Trying to do blonde hair (turned out a little darker than ideal, and it needed more highlights, but at least it was reasonably blonde-ish) Trying to combine washing with layering highlights on the same part (I think my biggest mistake here was not doing some layering on the shaded zones, since I relied too much on base coat+wash to fill in that side of the gradient) More blacklining (really liking the effect this has, though I need to work on the neatness and thickness of the lines) More pictures and thoughts as I worked on it at my blog: link Overall, I like the results, but I'm really annoyed at how stark the transition between the shades and highlights on the skirt turned out. Looking back, I'm not sure why I didn't do some glazing on it, because I could tell that it was too much even while painting the rest of the mini. I guess I'm still new enough to the hobby that I'm going to have stupid oversights like that. Anyway, C&C welcome
  3. I keep meaning to become more active on the forums. Let's see if it happens this time around. ;) This is all about the Seoni bust I brought with me to ReaperCon this year. I wanted to sculpt a bust this time since I had a lot of fun converting Jason Wiebe's Grudge last year, and while I don't play Pathfinder (this is mostly 40k/Magic city), I really dig a lot of the artwork. I sculpted the head/torso out of Beesputty. This was my first time working with it, and I liked it a lot more than Fimo, or Super Sculpey. Still, though -- I sculpted the head/torso multiple times until I was almost happy with them. The eyeballs are Green Stuff -- I would have ordered steel bearings ahead of time, but I didn't know what size I needed until I was ready for them. At that point, I spent an hour or two rolling out maybe 100 tiny balls of Green Stuff, and then I came back the next day to see what looked right. The date on this pic is 10/2, but all of September was nothing but a month's worth of mistakes, implosions, catastrophic disasters, etc. And Kev White saying, effectively, "Her nose still sucks." :) Yeah, yeah, I know. No time to fix it. 10/2 was my cut off day. I *thought* I was being generous with time. This is the start of her clothing. I made a pattern out of aluminum foil, and then used it as a guide for cutting the entire top of her dress out of a single sheet of Green Stuff. After taking a couple more sculpting classes at ReaperCon, I think that if I do this again, I'm going to approach this differently. The cloth is way too thick. I'll use the method of filling in gaps, and then adding a small amount of texture onto the body instead. Cloth thickness also made it difficult to do the bias tape/ribbing along the edges of her dress. Added some of her necklaces and hair structure here, too. My first attempt at doing hair. It sucks. Bad. I watched a couple videos on hair, and everyone seemed to use Sculpey. I gave it a try, and liked it more than my Beesputty attempt, but it still sucks. All the feedback I received at RC was the same: "It sucks." Lol. Detail of the staff/wand. I've done tons of conversions for friends, and this really only took maybe an hour to do. The gems are leftover eyeballs. The ab armor plate took a couple tries. The base is Apoxie. I made maybe 5 patterns out of paper before I was happy with the size, and once I had the shape cut out, I draped it over Seoni's waist for the shape, and let it cure. I'm mostly happy with the design, but next time I'll work slower, and square off the edges a little better. All the pieces together. Primed, and sort of base coated. Sort of. I was mostly happy with the tones (I wanted to paint her in a dark skin color -- something a little more Varisian), and in the future I'll be doing that. Hair suckage is more evident here. Her nose is blue because she fell over. :P No time to do stuff right! Let's go! The "final" piece. I really wish I could have had another 20 hours to paint, but October was pretty messy as as far IRL events went, though. She'll still get her 10-20 hours of paint. Maybe. This was more of a learning experience/"Can I actually do this?" kind of thing. I'm actually more motivated to start completely over, and correct a lot of the mistakes that I feel I made during the entire process. Am I content with what I turned in, though? Yeah, I am.

    Seoni, Original Version - 60034

Painting is taking me longer and longer now, I remember when it only took an evening up to a week . Now two weeks to finish a model. Not sure why I am getting slower. Currently painting Miniatures for the Pathfinder Adventure card game to use in place of their picture cards on the table. I hope this character gets picked and I did not just paint her to sit in a box. lol. Anyway hope you enjoy my version of Seoni. :)

    60009: Seoni Secret Sophie

Whew! I've been biting my nails hoping Kay would get her and she arrived! So now I can post her here! I painted up Seoni for Kay using her requested color of pink! Enjoy! C&C always welcome! So, the colors are: pink: old west rose, shaded with spattered crimson (I really love that color) and highlighted with porcelain rose and leather white with the freehand in pure white. blue: soft blue, shaded with midnight blue and a bit of walnut brown, highlighted with leather white and some pure white in the freehand along with snow shadow and leather white gold: ochre gold triad with mahogany brown and pure white browns: I also used the ochre gold triad but used more of the chestnut brown and added some walnut and mahogany for shadows skin: rosy skin, shaded with the spattered crimson and highlighted with fair skin and leather white, then I glazed in palomino gold for more contrast. the reindeer moss I painted using the moss triad I had fun with the base- it's cork, sand and greenstuff. I made a little turtle-like critter. My only gripe with this miniature is the mold lines. They run right over the face and were a pain to clean. Otherwise she's a beautiful miniature. Very dynamic!

Seoni is so hot. I painted this after taking a short hiatus, she still turned out ok though i think.
  7. I am painting up a bunch of pirates for 50 Fathoms one-shot and hopefully a campaign. Pretty fast paint jobs, i didn't spend a ton of time on these tabletop Bones minis. First up Gruff Grimcleaver (70133), now nicknamed The Swede: Next Mariel Twinspar (70135): And last pirate recruit Seoni (Bones 89006), painted up as a 50 Fathoms water mage.
  8. I'm planning on painting Ulf Gormundr soon, and I want to get him as close as i can to the painted example on this website. So maybe someone can help me out with some of my questions. To be blunt: How did they do that blue chainmail? How did they do that NMM Gold? How did they get the blonde hair to look so real? On the subject of blonde hair, I have the reaper 3 tier Blonde paints. It works well, but it doesn't come out looking as good as Ulf's hair. While i'm on the subject of blonde hair, I'm also planning on painting Seoni, as she is on this site, and her blonde hair looks post worthy as well. Appreciate any help. Sorry so many questions.
