  1. Turn order ... Some games turn is one full side gose, then the other sides full force gose, easy to keep track of but first shooting or alpha strike army's can make this a kinda lopsided go of it ... Some alternate unit activation witch keeps both sides active and reduces overwhelming fire but leads to several smaller units trying to bleed out the 'activations' of the other player before throwing out an end cap ... their big shooty unit going last one turn then first the next to effectively double tap ... Some have randome activation (colored dice in draw bag) or dice for following activation with command roll ... both good options ... Other popular turn structures ? Turn mechanics ... You know, player A rolls to hit, then rolls to wound then player B rolls to save wounds then maybe a moral check ... I was thinking of cutting this down to Player A rolls for hits ... player B saves vs wounds (putting wound modifiers and armor modifiers together in one roll) with a possible moral roll ... Kinga of war also has a kiss system but player A rolls to hit, to wound, and against player Bs moral value on his turn with player B making all rolls on his turn ... So I have been working on a semi randome (with some player influence) unit activation system with the player A rolling to hit with B save but now wondering if active player making all roll would be more or less intuitive ?
  2. This thread is something ... different from other works I have been done. I guess it's not entirely in accordance to the board rules, so you may forgive me and accept my humble bundle of roses, choclate and other stuff that will easy your severely upset minds. When I am in the mood, I am doing so many speed builds up to the point of painting (means assembly, basing and priming), that making them all into different threads I would flood the forum with an unnecessary number of threads. So I will keep this limited to the building process of my different tabletop figures, armies and stuff and transfer the finished figures to their respective painting threads. What's on the table at the moment?   3. What makes a good table top war game ... model count, system complexity, special characters, great background fluff, core rules ... what really makes one system more fun to play than another ? I have noticed several folks are working on a system as finding one that is 'just right' is almost impossible and if you do its tied to a model line you don't have ... I'm one of the folks working on a game system but I'm aiming for model independence ... a solid system that is not tied to any model line but open to use with any force you like ... I just want a good game I can bring any army I want to, and stll have a fair and balanced game with others bringing any army they like ... Most of the open army systems I have looked at are too light or over regulated and most don't have a viable point system ... a solid point system might never be perfect but it's the only viable medium for pick up games and turnament play in an open army game system , so I'm starting with ... A universal point system, based on force type templates. 1d10 based for all randome resolution. Smooth and straight forward game mechanics , with some special rules but keeping the system simple / fast is a primary goal. Looking for player preferences, likes/ dislikes , why one system stands out over others, what worked well and what just never seemed to get it right or seemed sooo wrong ... for all of us poking around at what could be ...

    Skellyman army (wargames factory)

    Hi everyone! So looking back at 2017, I am absolutely ashamed to see that I had only completed 5 (five! Only five!) Miniatures this year. Granted, I didn't have access to my painting stuff until April, and had five major life events happen this year both good and bad. The minis I did complete I am very happy with, and I did really push myself to get better and learn some new techniques. I also started about 30 miniatures that have not been finished, so I did more painting than it seems. When looking at my paint desk it has become apparent that I have far, far too many unfinished projects- including a few from more than four years ago. Therefore I have 3 goals for 2018: 1) paint 52 miniatures within the calendar year. Any stand alone miniature counts. 2) of these 52, complete at least one CAV force to bring to reapercon 2018. 3) complete two unfinished miniatures before starting a new miniature. In that vein, I have started my resolution a little early: These are 20 skeletons from wargames factory I assembled and primed this summer, but never finished as I had airbrush problems. Tonight in about 2 hours I blocked them in woodstain brown and began dry brushing with terrah khaki- a nice bone color by the way! My intention is the shade and highlight them, then arm them. I want to use these guys as an excuse to try verdigris... I am very excited to see how it turns out. If i get these guys done I'll already be more than a third of the way to 52 miniatures. While waiting for washes to dry on an exchange fig this morning, I decided I'd try getting a decent paint job onto a fig I pulled out of the latest BoGW that @robinh let me browse through last week. I pulled this fig because I thought it would work well as an evil mage type in the Savage Rifts setting. But I didn't think I'd use it for the current game, as the last encounter is tonight, before we switch over to 5th Ed for a while. But what the heck, I'm going to see what I can do with him anyway. Here's about 40 minutes of base coating. Robes/gloves will be dark red, tassley cloak thing will be purpley greys. Lots of metals. Anyone able to identify him? GW? Warzone maybe? (Identified below.....)

    And now for this week's minis, the spikeshell warriors. These guys were painted to tabletop using the same artists paints, but one was over white and the other was over black. The shell patterns are also different, but I ended up liking one more than the other. Thanks for looking.
  7. I expect this is going to be a long-running WIP thread. My intention is to convert this heap of vintage lead into war games armies to allow me to field forces for a variety of Tolkien situations, using only vintage Minifigs. For those who are younger than me, Minifigs produced this line of Tolkien-inspired figures starting in 1972, and, as far as we've ever been able to determine, it was the first range of specifically fantasy miniatures ever produced. They were the first that I bought as well, and I will freely admit that this is a nostalgia project. I posted a batch of finished elves this morning. Here's what I have left to do: two elf riders, an elf king to form a second command stand, 14 elf swordsmen, and 9 elf bowmen (three of whom have lost arrows and one who's been redone as a standard bearer for the command stand.) For the era of the Battle of the Five Armies, they have some dwarf allies. Here's a dozen, representing all three stock numbers that were produced. Each stock number was a strip of two. I have a batch of seven already finished and based. Minifigs did not issue any specific Lakemen, nor, for that matter, any specific Rohirrim on foot. For the Five Armies-era humans, I'll have to reach into the historical and use some figures from their NS (Norman/Saxon) range with round shields. I've got about three dozen available with which to work. They should also serve as dismounted Rohirrim when needed. Beorn and Gandalf are also available, and a token eagle... To continue with the good guys, there were two catalog numbers of actual mounted Rohirrim. I have two completed so far, and about 22 available, including a few Later Romans or similar Dark Ages figures which blend well. A few spare horses remain to be found. The Gondorians were represented by five different figures, a citadel guardsman, two rangers of Ithilien, a spearman, a swordsman, and a foot knight. I've got at least a dozen of each, plus a total of two dozen of ME53 and 54, Rangers of the North. The Dark Lord's forces can be lead by the imposing squadron of flying Nazgul, of which I have four: I have 18 wargs (plus a few already finished), but only two of the goblin riders: Large orcs came in three poses, with sword, axe or spear. I've got about 85 to be done: Smaller orcs came in four poses, a bowman, a swordsman without shield, a swordsman with shield, and a well equipped armored goblin with shield, spear and bow. Of that latter, I've only got a handful, all completed. Of the first three, I've got about seventy from a recent purchase: There is also one pose of little goblins. I finished a few of them last month. I've got more, but they are sitting in paint stripper at the moment. Sauron's human allies were represented by four poses of figures; there was a Haradrim spearman and a mounted lancer, of which I've got about 30 and 5 respectively: There was also a Southern spearman and a mounted swordsman. I only have a token 3 of the spearmen, so they won't be a unit on their own, but I do have nine of the mounted swordsmen, so they can be. Last, I have a hobbit militia of about a dozen, plus a couple of mounted hobbits. The foot hobbits came in strips of three, and one strip is much easier to find than the other... My basic plan is going to be to play these with Dragon Rampant, which generally uses units of six mounted or twelve foot figures, with provision for heroes and large monsters as exceptions. However, some of the teams will be big enough that I could use Chaos Wars (also in sixes and twelves), and I expect that an actual Battle of the Five Armies game my brother and I have been discussing will take every orc/goblin that we have painted. Edit: Ooops! Forgot the Dunlendings; there are enough of them to make a unit, and given Saruman's forces a bit of distinctiveness...

  9. Back in December, when I finally had some time and motivation to get back to painting, I decided I'd really quickly do up some IMEF marines. Just table top, didn't even clean up mold lines or anything. Well, do primarily to being easily distracted by......what was I saying? Oh yes, easily distracted by other bright shiny objects, it took me over 4 months to get them all done. Here is a quick group shot. I still don't have any real futuristic urban terrain to use to shoot these guys. Reggie and Torch still need to be sealed, but looking at the forecast it could be June before it stops raining. The rest have already seen combat as some mercs for hire last week in Savage Rifts.     Jasper and the Panzerkampfrad

    Yet another German war machine (in case you were wondering, yes I also have Russian, British, US and Japanese stuff, I'm just doing all the German at once so I can paint them all at once). This unusual creation came out of the recent Panzermech Kickstarter by West Wind. A giant War Wheel. Should be a pretty quick and easy assembly to get it ready for priming. All I've done so far is washed the resin.

    03566: Valloa, Female Elf Thief

    Sometimes you have to force your way through the rough patches. Fortunately, I recently found Valloa here at my FLGS. Given that she’s been on my “want” list for a while and their selection of metal minis was sparse at best, I snapped one up to dispel the painting melancholy. Apologies in advance for the bad images, lighting didn’t want to comply, and the closest to true color I could get has bad shine from camera flash + sealer. Here she is: I didn’t originally have plans to paint this one as a drow. But, I wanted a chance to try out the dark elf skin triad and didn’t have any other available elf minis to mess around with. The paints are fantastic though, and will likely see use outside of skin in the future. This is the second mini I’ve done with a purple cloak. I think the shadows and highlights turned out better (and more varied) than the previous attempt. And working upon previous advice, used no less than seven shades of brown overall (not that you can tell). Please feel free to comment and critique! I need to improve on things next time.
  13. I'd planned to get started on these a bit ago, but got distracted by other bright shiny objects... Forged in Battle (West Wind Production's historic line) are currently doing their third Kickstarter for their War and Empire line of ancients with a little over a week left. I figured it was time to get started on some of mine from their first Kickstarter for that line, from a couple of years ago. I don't really know what I'm doing with these , and my knowledge of history from the era is primarily from the Iron Maiden song about Alexander, so I'm going to have to do some googling and ask some questions (apparently base sizes and number of figs per base are of some importance....). So to start off, I opened my box from KS1 and grabbed a pack, making sure it wasn't cavalry or camelry or chariots or elephants or anything super cool, since I'll save those for after I know what I'm doing a bit. The pack I grabbed were WE-RP02, Roman Velites, from the Punic Wars. Now in the Kickstarter I picked a couple of stater armies that they had pre-defined. Apparently these guys are from one of those. I'll have to track down which ones I picked sometime soon I suppose. I've got a spreadsheet somewhere..... Anyway, I dumped them all out a sorted them by pose. Looks like there are 4 standard poses, plus a command and a standard bearer. I cleaned them up and got to here: Looks like I got 6 of 3 of the poses, 7 of the other, 2 commanders, a standard bearer, and an extra shield and banner. That adds up to more than 24 figs, which is apparently common with these packs. So, I "think" I need 1 commander and 1 standard bearer, and presumably 22 other guys. And I "think" they go 4 figures on a 40mmx20mm base. But I need to check on all that. And I need to figure out what I'm going to stick them too for painting....
  14. Since I don't have enough projects on the go, I decided to start another one. When the Bones III Kickstarter came around I really liked the Blackstar Corsairs, so much I ordered two sets. When the giant box o' Bones arrived I was surprised to see them on their sprues still and in pieces. Not a problem, it just meant I couldn't play with them, err, inspect them when I was sorting my figs. So they all went in a Ziploc. Today while pondering which project to work on I noticed them (they were hiding behind another project I have't even started a WIP on yet....). And tonight while pondering how the Olympics ruin TV for everyone, even when it is night where the Olympics are being held, I decided to go take a look at them. I found it interesting that all 5 come with the same "accessory" sprue, which contains a bayonet, a belt of grenades?, the visor, a sheathed knife and a gun with right hand. But 80076 and 80080 come with the same gun on their parts sprue as well. So you end up with a couple extra guns. Each guy comes in 4 parts btw, lower torso, upper torso and each arm. My plan is to do the first 5 as designed, then do some mods on the other 5. May need to look for some weapons to swap. At this point these guys are just clipped and friction fitted. I'll get them cleaned up and glued together sometime soon. The middle 3 will likely need the right arm and weapon left off until after painting the body. Not sure if I'll use all of the accessories on all of them or not. I'm very happy with these guys, glad I got 2 sets. They will likely play a role in my Savage Rifts campaign at some point. And maybe the IMEF have a new enemy to battle....
  15. I've been running a Savage Rifts campaign (Pinnacle did a Kickstarter to adapt Palladium's classic Rifts setting over to the Savage Worlds rules). So I decided I needed some things painted that would work in that setting. As the Coalition is ever present but I have lots of "guys in armor" I decided to start with some Skelebots (The Coalition's disposable killer robots, designed to look like skeletons, as the Coalition is all about the skulls). I have a bit of an issue with ordering anything from Palladium these days (Robotech) combined with their existing Skelebot figs being from the early 90s and pretty rough by today's standards, so I went for Reaper's awesome Cyber-Reavers as substitutes. I ordered a couple of packs at Christmas then found 3 more that were left over from another project. The plan was for a nice quick tabletop paint job, but it still took over a month, as I kept getting distracted by other things (like big stompy robots, and actually doing game prep). Finally got around to finishing them yesterday, and sealing them today. @Glitterwolf requested (and provided) a fancy background, so I printed it out and grabbed a Sci-Fi bridge terrain piece for them to stand on.     I speed painted these zombies probably a month ago, I just haven't been in the mood to take pictures or hobby since I finished 'em. Well, I had a pretty good day yesterday, and I think my mojo might be back, so you get some pictures. I think I spent about 7 hours on them as a group, and they're painted to a tabletop level.   17. I'm going to be running Savage Rifts some in the new year (at least until everyone gets tired of either 1) dying, or 2) being indestructible, or 3) wants to go play some 5e. For those that don't know, Rifts is Palladium Games "everything and the kitchen sink" game setting; magic, psionics, sci-fi, monsters, giant robots, dragons, aliens... you name it. Its actually the game I started out my RPG journey on, many, many years ago. So when Pinnacle decided to Kickstarter a Savage Worlds version of Rifts, I had to pledge. Since we had an open time (one game ended, our other one is on break due to renovations) I figured we could try it out. Palladium has some older Rifts minis, and I got some of them ages ago. I'm planning to paint up some of those as needed. I'm very reluctant to buy any new ones from them (until I get phase 2 Robotech figs, or the world ends in some apocalypse, whichever comes first (I'm guessing the apocalypse)) so I'm also looking for other alternatives (also, the Rifts minis are pretty dated, small compared to the current scale, and even then the scale seems to fluctuate between figs). Suggestions are welcome. Some of what I'll be assembling/painting are proxies. I've seen nothing in 28mm that looks much like a UAR-1 Enforcer, but I have a nice big stompy Weird War 2 mecha from West Wind that will be at least (scale) 20 ft tall. I've got a couple of old VOID mechs that should get some paint on them. And starting out I've got some Reaper Cyber-Reavers I ordered aas part of the 12 Days of Christmas promotion. These will be painted up as Coalition Skelebots. Just cleaning them up an removing mold lines so far. Haven't decided yet if I'm just going to put them on the slottas with a little putty or find some resin bases. They are just mooks so keeping it simple would make sense, but they are also easily posed so could take advantage of some interesting bases. Bases I'd need to find, in boxes......hmmmm.

    West Wind SOR-G03 Tiger Mecha

    As mentioned elsewhere, I'm running some Savage Rifts, so I'm in need of a bunch of Big Stompy Robots. Now while I don't have any Rifts specific ones (mostly because as far as I know they have never been made), I do like me some Big Stompy Robots. As we're playing using 28 mm figs, that ruled out CAV, Robotech, etc. But, as luck would have it, do have some others. So the first one I'm building is West Wind's SOR-G03, the Tiger Mecha. I recently received this as an add-on from their Panzermech Kickstarter. When I ordered it I didn't really realize quite how big it actually is. This thing is massive!! This is where I'm at so far. Just glued the lower torso to the base. There will be some gap filling to do around the feet, but that's not bad, its just dirt and rubble so should be easy to add to. The turret is all prepped and I've been prepping the many metal pieces (the ones on the paper are ready, the stuff on the mat is for the next session). I haven't done much resin (not to say I don't own lots, just none of it is done ). I'm tempted to magnetize the center pivot, so the turret could rotate. A couple issues with that though: 1) I need to find my magnets, 2) I got my magnets for Robotech (6mm scale) so I'm not sure I have anything big enough, 3) I've never done magnets with resin, 4) I've never done magnets with that much surface contact, so don't know what wear on the paint would be like. Thoughts? Paint scheme will be using the late war German paint colours from Scale 75, as I got those most of a year ago for the panzer I was going to do during the actual Panzermech kickstarter (and which is still sitting on top of my desk in a baggy). Secrets of the Third Reich takes place in 49 (with the war having not ended) so that seems appropriate. I'm not planning on using an airbrush (since I still haven't learned to use mine...sigh, or even have it set up currently). So we will see how it goes. At least it is smaller than Khanjira.

    Painted this guy up to act as our dwarven barbarian for some Adventurers League gaming at an upcoming con. Messing around with skin tones. I may go back and add some tattoos before I finish coating him with varnish (he's got one coat of gloss right now). Am not sure what to put on him, other than maybe the rune for anger.

    89004 - Pathfinder Goblin Warchanter

    This is my first to-completion detailed mini outside of the three LTP-2 figures. I'm looking to start a Rise of the Runelords game and needed a warchanter figure; this one from Reaper is wonderful in its detail and goblinesque insanity. Unfortunately, I think the molds are a little off-kilter on the Bones version; there are several spots on the figure where one side butts up against a flat spot from the other half of the mold - you can even see one of them in the Reaper website image. I found myself departing from the LTP painting order and starting with "inner" areas like eyes and mouth as well as isolated details like the whip and blades. Skin and leather were left until late, with details on top of those the last. Don't know if this is a good thing or not, but I felt more sure in painting up to those areas rather than filling them in and inevitably splattering over multi-layered skin tones. Thanks to the folks at CMPA for the painting tips as I'm learning. Wish I could have been to the holiday party; finished this ravaging beauty as compensation.

    Jasper's MERCS:Recon WIP

    Got my Wave 1 of MERCS: Recon last week. Wave 1 consists of the two versions of the game: Counter Threat, which has the CCC and EU as the MERCS, and Assassination Protocol, which has the KemVar and Keizai Waza. Each faction consists of 5 MERCS, and each box also comes with 10 SecFor (Security Forces): 5 SecForII with Shotguns and 5 SecForIII with machine guns. The sculpts for these are all the same in a box, but the sculpts are different between boxes, so you end up with 2 different sculpts of each time 5. Wave two will include all sorts of KS exclusive figs as well as a whole mess of faction boxes for all the other factions in the MERCS universe. From the posts I've seen today they have just hit the water from China. While the SecFor figs are cool and will get painted, they aren't needed to play the game. The box comes with tokens for each of the SecFor so you can just use those to begin with. But they don't provide tokens for the MERCS, so need to get at least one set of them done so I can play (yeah, I could make print off standies or something to start, but nah....) I decided to start with the EU, just because they looked like they could all be fully assembled before painting without being too annoying to paint. So far, I've got 3 assembled. From left to right they are the Medic, the Sergeant and the Leader.
