  1. I need an excuse to get out of a painting rut, so challenge accepted! The Dragon: Ebonwrath (because the Bones 3 dragons are not yet in the online store) Let the randomness begin. The fates have selected: Primary color: Cloudy Grey (16) Secondary color: Lemon Yellow (5) Tertiary color: Orange Brown (4) Oh my. I'll have to think about this one. With those colors, I'll go all in with the three star challenge. Why not...
  2. So I decided to do this random dragon challenge thing. My rolls. Main 20 9039 Pure White Secondary 6 9227 Brilliant green Miscellaneous 10 9023 Imperial Purple And my intent is to do the 3 star challenge, I was planning this before rolling. Interesting colors, I have the pure white but not the other two. The arrival of Deathsleet with his Halloweeny reinforcements, and the missing two paints. And here he is ready for the paint. I started with giving him a primer of brilliant green cut with 2-3 times as much pure white.
  3. I have accepted the Rainbow Dragon Challenge I will be painting 77110: Deathsleet To keep it truely random i will be calling on @pcktlnt to roll my paint colors.
  4. I'm kinda on time! Please see the main post here for rules, questions and general chatter, while using this thread to keep a list of links to your show-offs or show-off related comments in a single post: A reminder to please adhere to miniatures posting guidelines as usual. http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/72577-resolutionary-painting-challenge-2017-chatterquestions/ All the information you need should be here. Due to the revised format, there will be more than one bonus challenge available for this month. Including a "Hard mode" which Is some combination that may or may not have a source behind it. Your challenge is: 9! Bonus Challenge: The First! (Is this a re-hash? I don't recall.) Fall! Modify/paint a mini/minis to be falling/fallen. (Translate fallen how you will.) Bonus Challenge: The Second! December 14th is National Bouillabaisse Day. For those unfamiliar, this is a Fish Stew from southern France. Paint a mini that incorporates a fish motif. Hard Mode Challenge! Under Wraps: Paint a mini so that anything that any armor-weapons-cloth-etc looks like it's patterned wrapping paper. This is assuming a humanoid figure. Dragons or such apply the same challenge to the whole body. Stop the presses! Bonus, The third! With the breaking news of our beloved space pope leaving Reaper - let's see what you can paint up as a tribute to him. Bonus points for actually making a "bryanzilla" mini accurate to the avatar. Good luck The game is made up and the points don't matter
  5. Right, so for those of you who haven't seen it, Cyradis, Sirithiliel, and Pezler the Polychromatic launched the Random Rainbow Dragon Challenge last month (check it out! http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/76666-the-seers-and-a-wizard-present-a-random-rainbow-dragon-challenge/), and I couldn't resist the temptation to enter. I chose Kryphrixis for my, er, test subject, and I wound up getting Cloudy Grey for my primary color, Violet Red for the secondary color, and Lemon Yellow for the tertiary color. I took the 3 Star challenge, which meant I could only use the original three colors I rolled, plus black and white. WiP is here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/76990-ironhammer-is-taking-the-random-rainbow-dragon-challenge/ So here is the finished figure! This really was a speed paint in the end, all told it took me somewhere around 4.5 hours. Cheers! Thanks to Cyradis, Sirithiliel, and Pezler for organizing this, I had a lot of fun with this guy!
  6. Stuck my thumb in the box of unpainted bones and pulled out a Kyphryxis. must unbag bag and dry fit, trim mold lines and scrub, but first, the random colors... 15, ah what could that mean? I'll look later. Let's roll another. seven! Good. Nicely spaced numbers. Will look it up in a minute. For the third roll... Well darn gotta wait for the full minute so the time shown is different... Finally! oof! One! Critical miss. Well, it's probably a boring color at the top of the table. Let's see what this means: 15: mint green 7: olive green 1: fire red huh. Whadaya know. Time to go see what I've got for colors... (To be continued)
  7. I had a lot of fun with this guy, even though I was initially a bit intimidated by the colors I rolled and am not thrilled with the scale pattern now that I've worked on him... Contest Thread Combined Show-Off thread WIP The colors rolled were 1) Orange Brown, 2) Cloudy Grey and 3) Imperial Purple and after a couple of base layers, he started to look too much like a pumpkin to not call him Pumpkin Spice.. It will be noted that I did a completely terrible job on the flocking - only my second attempt at flocking ever and doing it with a headache and lots of kids running around meant that I didn't notice until it was way too late that he's got grass growing all over his feet now! Also, pay no attention to the goldish mush-piles.. again, trying to mold with distractions didn't work out too well (not that I'm particularly adept at that either ) PS's frontmost foot was badly bent even after a boil bath, so I made him stepping on a shield. The shield, sword and bones were donors from the Ghouly Grab Bag since I got a 77242 Skeleton Warrior in my October order. oh, and I need a better photo-booth than white paper taped in front of my paint stand!
  8. Right, so I finally saw this challenge on the forum today and couldn't resist jumping in! Probably a bad move with Reapercon coming up, so I may be a bit slow until after October (alternatively, if the Dragon goes really well it might turn out to be one of my entries ) I picked Kryphrixis, since I already had one handy from Bones III. I rolled Cloudy Grey (16) for the primary color, Violet Red (11) for the secondary, and Lemon Yellow (5) for the third. Not bad I suppose, as I've sort of got all three primary colors going (Cloudy Grey does kind of have a touch of blue to it). This should be interesting! A trip to the store will be in order next to pick up the paints, as I don't have either the red or yellow. I'm thinking I'm going to go for the Star 3*** challenge and see what happens. Oh right, and the objective evidence.
  9. Painting a dragon with random palette of colors was a fun challenge. One of the most fun to paint this year. (tied with Hippo King) Contest Thread Combined Show-Off thread WIP Insomnia started out as a storm dragon, but I chose to go with ocean waves instead. I didn't have a sea dragon, and was having fun with water bases. at 3 weeks of painting it is the second fastest dragon I have finished. Really it just flew by, and I kept making more time to work on him. His name is Insomina because of more than the usual late or middle of the night painting sessions. was aiming at high tabletop quality. Officially rolled : Mint green, Cloudy Grey and Marine Teal with no further ado
  10. Blah, can't win lately. Con, sick, travel, travel, drama....sorry I'm late y'all. Your challenge is: 8! Bonus Challenge: The First! September 25th is national comic book day! Paint a mini to resemble a comic book character of your choice (Bonus points* for any from the "League of regrettable superheroes/supervillains" Bonus Challenge: The Second! 3 Families of color only. The 'typical' halloween colors of orange, purple, and black. You can only use colors that have "orange" "purple" or "black" as part of their names, and all 3 colors must be present on the figure. Hard Mode Challenge! Modify a mini (besides the gelatinous cube/large fire elemental) to have an actual flickering light-source inside of it (with the battery concealed somehow), like a jack-o-lantern. The more creative the better, obviously. Good luck *The game is made up and the points don't matter
  11. Congratulations, you have found the thread for posting your completed Random Rainbow Dragon!! The original quest can be seen here: Please provide a link to your Show Off Thread (which should include the model # you chose in its tags), a link to the Work in Progress thread, a brief statement of what colors you rolled, a statement of what dragon you painted (for search purposes), and photos of your lovely dragon. The Mods may make grumpy faces and remove chatter-posts from this thread. For chatter, please go to the original quest thread. You receive +5000 experience, +3 to skill Crafting (Mini Painting), and over 9000 Internet Points (redeemable whenever, wherever, for bragging rights on the internet) for completing this quest. Thank you for your participation. May our flock of dragons fly together forever in the pixels of this thread!
  12. So it appears there is a contest going on with a long list of rulz. The roll: But I own none of those paints. In fact, I own none of the paints on the list, so it is substitution time! Can you guess the brand? So raise your hand if you guessed correctly. If you did you win a cookie, provided by the contest organizers. (highly likely their cookies are safe) It is somewhat hard to tell from the swatch, but I think my paint is actually more intense than the Reaper red. The ink might end up being a closer match. Currently I'm thinking of doing the second challenge. The only thing that might change my mind is if I really don't like a red eye, as it would be my only color option.
  13. My dragon arrived! Deathsleet for me! The Ebonwrath is for my BF. I rolled a 15, 9, and 3. Ooooh boy. This is going to get funky. Mint green primary. Heather blue secondary. Lava orange miscellaneous. I am going for the base unstarred challenge because this roll is scary and the last dragon I did was like... my 3rd figure ever, over a decade ago unless you count the fairy familiar dragon. Including previous dragon in pictures. Must have been early because it is unlabeled on bottom for number (I labeled soon after beginning to track progress). So yeah. The mint and the blue aren't so bad. The orange?! Uh oh!! My dragon is going to need some work on the base to put the plastic in place better. Thinking of connecting the foot bases instead of two spots on the ground. I have the blue, will buy the orange and green on Saturday. Scheme? I got some time to ponder that!
  14. First off, I'm a complete sucker for rolling d20s. Second, I've been in a painting slump and can't be bothered to drag all my paints out to paint and/or I'm too intimidated to work on my other projects. Third, my hubby (a.k.a. Wise Kraken) has a conference coming up and is going to be out of town for the last week of September. I'm hoping that I can get my confidence and enthusiasm back if I do a silly project that doesn't require a lot of set-up or over-thinking. So here's the link to the rules post, I'll probably accidentally break some of them because I'm just not planning on stressing about this. (Which, I think, is the point, right??) http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/76666-the-seers-and-a-wizard-present-a-random-rainbow-dragon-challenge/ And here are my pictures: So the dragon is Kryphrixis , and my rolls were 4, 17 & 10. Which is Orange Brown, Marine Teal and Imperial Purple. It's... actually really close to doing a colorful version of a bronze dragon. I didn't cheat, honest!! I'm short the Orange Brown, ironically, but it will probably take as long to order the paint as I'll take to prep the dragon. I haven't decided whether I want to take on one of the extra challenges, it might depend on how I feel or how well the colors mix. It's super tempting to shade with other colors from the same triads, mainly since I've already got them. Wish me luck, and feel free to gently prod me to work on this guy. EDIT: Deleted duplicate image of die rolls.
  15. Hello everybody! The last WIP I attempted is on hiatus due to um...losing the figure while packing away things to clean the carpet. Dragon selected: Krupixis (spelling) Challenge level: * * * Paints Primary: Palomino Gold Secondary: Olive Green Tertiary: Blush Pink Extras: Pure White and Pure Black "Let's rock this joint!"
  16. Congratulations, by opening this forum post, you have received a quest! This quest is a challenge created by the combined forces of @Sirithiliel the Queen Tiamacrab, a Wizard Most Wild @Pezler the Polychromatic, and myself – @Cyradis the Questgiver. The challenge is this! Paint a small dragon, letting the dice control the colors! The Rules: Post in the WIP Forums “_Your Pseudonym_ is taking the random rainbow dragon challenge!” or “_Your Pseudonym_ has accepted the d20 rainbow dragon quest!” something to that extent. Select a figure from one of the following: Stormwing (from Bones III), Kryphrixis (from Bones III), Deathsleet (77110), or Ebonwrath (77102). You must select the dragon BEFORE rolling for colors. Take a photo with the figure and a clock as proof of order of operations. Roll for colors! Use a d20 and a photo, or an online dice roller with a screenshot as proof of rolling. Or have a fellow forum dweller vouch for your rolls. Use the Color Chart below to determine what the color is that you rolled. There are three rolls. Below is an online dice roller. Most keyboards have a PRT SCRN button that can take a screenshot for you. Then you can paste the photo into Paint to save. I'm sure there are better methods, but that works for me. https://www.wizards.com/dnd/dice/dice.htm The first roll determines what your primary base color is. That must be the dominant color on the figure. The second roll determines your secondary color. It should be the second color that catches the eye, and second most prevalent color on the figure. The third roll determines your miscellaneous color. This should be most of the accent colors that you use, and third most prevalent color on the figure. You might need to order paint or go to the FLGS after rolling if you don’t have a given bottle – we’ll be patient and wait for you. If you can’t get a bottle of one of these colors, here is a spreadsheet with equivalent colors from different brands. If you really can't get them, use the closest thing you got to your rolls (let us know what they are please). https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xl-x9eW3bLw5eqDeNUG2JUwn2EZwn34TDKfNIg5uul4/edit#gid=5 Number Reaper # Color Name Color Description 1 9004 Fire Red Bright red 2 9134 Clotted Red Dull red 3 9218 Lava Orange Volcanic orange 4 9201 Orange Brown Dull orange 5 9009 Lemon Yellow Bright yellow 6 9227 Brilliant green Bright green 7 9035 Olive Green Olive dull green 8 9017 True Blue Bright blue 9 9231 Heather Blue Dull light blue 10 9023 Imperial Purple Deep purple 11 9026 Violet Red A very misnamed color; somewhere between burgundy and magenta. Not violet. 12 9262 Blush Pink Very pink 13 9029 Earth Brown Generic brown 14 9122 Terran Khaki Light brown 15 9263 Mint Green Bright pastel green 16 9089 Cloudy Grey Generic grey 17 9077 Marine Teal Teal, blueish 18 9074 Palomino Gold Earthy gold yellow 19 9037 Pure Black Super black. Critical threat! 20 9039 Pure White Super white. Critical threat! You are allowed to use whatever colors to shade and highlight that you want, as long as the rolled colors are obvious visually.* Example: you can shade a red dragon with purple, brown, or black, but it must always appear as a red dragon. A white dragon shaded with grey must appear as a white dragon, not a grey dragon. You are allowed to use colors outside the ones that you rolled, but they must not take up more visual surface area than any of the others.** Example: your pink, green, and gray dragon is allowed to have bone-beige teeth. The proportions of color on the figure can be however you want, as long as the 1st roll is dominant, 2nd is less, 3rd is less, and anything else smaller. Example: 70% pink, 15% green, 10% gray, and 5% anything else. Or it could be 50% pink, 25% green, 15% grey, and 10% anything else. The tidbit colors are fine wherever, as long as they are minor. Paint your dragon according to the rolls plus your tidbits. Even if it is outrageous. The goal is to make the dragon look as awesome as possible without the benefit of planning color themes. You can add spots, stripes, eye-spots like moths have, or nothing. This is the base challenge. Star 1* You may decide after your initial three rolls to limit your shading colors to your rolled colors mixed with pure black and white. You may still use tidbit colors. Declare this if you go for a Star 1 challenge! Star 2** You may decide after your initial three rolls to not use colors outside of your rolled ones and shading colors (so no tidbits like beige teeth, only 3 visual colors shaded however you want). Declare this if you go for a Star 2 challenge! Star 3*** You may decide to do both the Star 1 and Star 2 challenges, using absolutely nothing but your three rolled colors, plus black and white for shading. If you do this, you are allowed to use the white for areas like teeth and eyes that could be really weird otherwise (or not - up to you). Effectively, you have 5 colors to work with only, and three of them must be the majority (in decreasing order of prevalence). You gotta be nuts! There is no time limit on this. However, if the WIP photos stop showing up at a normal rate and there’s never a Show Off thread, the forum dwellers may gently poke fun at you for adding this to your Shelf of Shame. Post to the Show Off forums with a “_Your Pseudonym_ has completed the random rainbow dragon challenge!” sort of title upon completion. Brag about your awesome (or hilarious) dragon. Win all the internet-points. Receive experience and praise. Thus shall end the quest. Once the first Random Rainbow Dragon has been completed, we will start up a group Show Off thread to compile all of the dragons in a great flock of rainbowy goodness. 18. 7 DAY/5 HEADS Ma'al CHALLENGE!

Well... the time is nearly upon me. I'm on my last night of work for the next six days, so it's time to tackle this beastie! Or at least it will be tomorrow, Just setting up the thread and planning my attack. I've painted all the other 'large' things, but this is the first I've seen of the 7-day challenges. I'm actually pretty excited about it. A lot of my normal strategies are thrown out the window because of the rule stipulations and I'm NOT sure I'll be able to get the result I want... I have a plan for the wings, but that may be needed to come back to after the challenge is over... Still not sure yet. I've made a reputation for making the most of the tools I have for interesting results... Just not sure yet about THESE tools.. So yeah... I've got it fitted and washed... I've replaced the paints I needed... and I tied up any brush bigger than 0 and threw them in a drawers to avoid mistakes... Just need to finish out this shift, grab a few hours sleep... and start the clock. The weekend should be fine, but I'm going to lose some time on Monday... I still think I have it in me!! Frankly the biggest issue I predict is going to be internet access. I have my phone, but I hate typing on that... hence the cut and pasting being done tonight. Still think I can do this though!!!
  19. Khanjira 7 day challenge by IT

Don't know why I'm so nervous to put this out there. Really it's just for fun and no big deal, but I'd like to enter myself into a goblin challenge starting tomorrow, May 24. Time Tbd. Khanjira is currently still in the box. Tonight I will dry fit, clean, and attempt to fix warping. Tomorrow afternoon I will begin the challenge. Just to be sure: I have a couple packs of round size 10/0, 5/0, and 3/0. Any of those would be allowed, correct? They are within the 10 mm long, but not sure where to measure the 1 mm wide. At the ferrule, just the bristles at the ferrule end or the tip? okay, now to clean the paint area and I'd some colors.
  20. March and April 2017 Your challenge is: 9! Bonus Challenge: The First! Given that (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) spring starts in this time frame - Modify (if necesseary) and Paint a figure (doesn't matter what) in a jumping/springing pose Bonus Challenge: The Second! April 22nd is National Jelly bean day. Paint a mini in tribute to your favorite flavor jellybean (bonus* points if you choose tutti fruttti) *The game is made up and the points don't matter. Hard Mode Challenge! "Disrupted" Light source (from any direction but above.) Paint any mini you choose in any scheme you choose, but the lighting must come from the sides or below, as if it was filtering through some other opaque object to disrupt the lighting. Ex: The character is standing close to a chainlink fence, so it casts a 'shadow grid' on them, or perhaps through an old window with thick beams so the there's a large + shaped shadow being cast on them. Again please refer questions to the main thread. Not like there's ANY chance for something on April 1st...
  21. If anyone wants to run this years contest, please let me know. Categories have been: 40-99mm wide/tall (Reaper only) 100mm+ wide/tall (Reaper only) Diorama Non Reaper models over 40mm wide/tall we only had 4 diorama entries this year, and a DDS2 that should probably have been in there versus the other category.. Given that we are getting so few.. I am questioning if we want to get rid of it, or offer fewer prizes. there was a request to make the non Reaper category open to Busts as well.. thoughts?
  22. Including a “Hard mode†which Is some combination that may or may not have a source behind it. January and February 2017 Your challenge is: 8! Bonus Challenge – The First! In honor of having a Friday the 13th, Paint a mini up in your best rendition of a classic horror creature. It does not have to resemble the actual creature/character in physique, just paint job. Bonus Challenge – The Second! A return of our challenge from last year: Fingerpainting! That is, except for priming and sealing, using no other paint applicator besides fingers. And no – enlisting the help of a smaller friend/family member/minion does not qualify. WITH an adjustment this time: It must be a creature of some form or another – no easy ways out with chests/crates/etc. Hard Mode Challenge! Monochrome Microbust: This is easiest with a bones figure for obvious reasons. Take a mini and cut off part of the body so that it resembles an otherwise normal miniatures bust. For purposes of this challenge, the figure must be no larger than a ‘medium’ creature (but should be at least vaguely humanoid) and “Bust†will be defined as – arms no longer than just above the elbow, and chest no further down than the navel. The exception is if the hair goes further down, you may preserve the hair but the rest of the body must still be gone. Monochrome may denote any singular color you want (even grayscale) but you may only use black and white to change the color of the base one chosen. – Please reserve any questions on this challenge for the chatter thread. PLOT TWIST! Hidden challenge: Fancy Date Night Makeover: Paint up a miniature that's wearing normal medieval or sci-fi armor/clothing into a fancy tux/suit/dress appropriate for date night. Minis that are already wearing appropriate date night attire don't count. (Think kind of like those tuxedo tshirts or similar - full plate armor with a suit and tie painted on it or so.)
  23. Okay! I now have the paints I will require, as well as the superglue and the brushes!! On Tuesday morning I will be starting my own Kaladrax Reborn challenge! The rules I shall be following are the standard. 1: No brushes will be used that are larger than a standard size 0. Also no airbrushing or finger painting is permitted!! 2: I will have seven days from my posted start time to finish the work. This will be established with a photo showing date and time on my computer screen. 3: All parts of the miniature will be fully painted. Again, all paint will be applied using a brush no larger than a size 0. 4: No prep work will be done to the miniature before the start time beyond washing, dry-fitting, and possibly boiling to correct warpage. 5: All items that come in the retail box must be painted. In this case it is all of Kaladrax and his base. I think that is the full rules for a Kaladrax challenge! My starting pic will also have images of the brushes I will use. Oh, one last thing.. My Kaladrax will NOT be painted as a Dracolich/Ravener.. I plan on making him a Wyrmwraith, as I have not seen anyone do him as one yet. :) Ok, pre-game chatter will be more than welcome!!
  24. Yes, the challenge insanity has gotten me, too. Just not quite as bad....I think. It's also a slightly different variety. I have 50 of these guys: Don't ask me why, I have no idea; I think they've been multiplying in the dark foot locker they were stored in. Anyway, the challenge I have set for myself is this: I will convert 49 of them so that no two are the same. That's right, I'm going to (hopefully) create a small horde of individualized mono-pose plastic goblins. I am going to leave 1 unconverted, for two reasons: 1) I will have an original figure to compare my conversions against. 2) Once the whole group is done I can hide him in there someplace and see if anyone can find him. I suppose you're all gonna want me to paint 'em too, aren't you? Fine, I'll do that, too. The main point of this exercise is the conversion, though; once that's done painting may take a little (lot) longer. What's the time frame, you ask? There isn't one, but it's not going to be years long or anything, either. In fact, I've already started; see below. Let's call it the last day of September for converting and painting to be done. Also, just for kicks, I'm gonna give you all some power over me (just a little, don't get any crazy ideas). You all collectively have 2 vetoes that you may use if you think I'm slacking off and one goblin looks a little too much like another. Some rules about that: 1) The basic pose will be staying (mostly) the same for all of them, so that doesn't count 2) At least 4 people need to agree that a certain gobbo doesn't cut it; I don't want 22 different people all vetoing a different figure. 3) Vetoes only apply to conversions; the paint jobs will be fairly similar in order to help me get through them. So, the first 6 are done: Fur trimmed Hun style helmet, looted human helmet, this was supposed to be a fur cap, but it just looks like hair, so we'll call it hair. Eye patch, mohawk, pirate style do-rag. They all have different shields as well.
  25. I am just putting feelers out there to see who would be interested in possibly another Bones 1 or 2 painting activity this summer. I enjoyed the Bones I little people beauty pageant and the Bones 2 beauty pageant with the sea priest. Is that something people might be interested in participating in this summer? We could select a Bones 2 mini for another beauty pageant. Or maybe do some kind of a tiered point-based or category based activity for Bones I if people still have those left and want to knock them out. Open to ideas or whether or not this is something people might be interested in. Probably an end of August deadline for a summer beauty pageant, maybe end of the year if it was a group/Bones I type of deal. If you have other ideas I'm open to them.
