  1. I've decided on the figures I'm using for this project now too, they changed since last time. I want to enter it into this year's Reapercon Diorama category (of course) and I want it to qualify for Bombshell Babes diorama, so I'm picking out 5 babes to battle the keeper (RBG) and his summoned demon (reaper glabrezu): 1) Celeste - Sorceress/wizard, 2) Khai the Huntress - ranger, going to weapon swap her to give her a bow, 3) Thorga Half Orc - Barbarian, Astrid Thunderhammer - Cleric, and Sister Vasha Fane - Paladin. This piece will be 2 stories tall, it will have a lot of details and a lot of action, with a summoning circle that the Glabrezu is inside of at the time the heroines come rushing into the Keeper's Sanctum. The badelf adventuring party! Vs..... The Keeper and his summoned Glabrezu
  2. I've started working in earnest on my diorama entry for ReaperCon... Nothing like waiting till the last minute... First I figured out placement, then carved out the wall. And now I'm working on actually painting it up. I have no idea if I'm going to be able to pull off the OSL effect or not.
  3. This is one of my planned dioramas for ReaperCon. It is going to be a post apocalyptic 'bot shop featuring Bombshell Miniatures's Maelee and an assortment of robots. Right now the structure is built and partially painted with some weathering started. Still need to put a sign together but other than that, all construction is completed. What color do you suggest for the bricks/stone? The walls are a faint blue which is hard to see in the photos and will have rust effects like the roof. These are most of the 'bots as well as the workbench. The Maelee I am using is in my travel paint kit so I did not get her out for the photo. Do you like the two toned 'bot or should I go with a solid color? Any other suggestions would be welcome!
  4. OK, so this is one of those "good enough!" moments and I am calling this done! This, actually being the stage for many of my firsts.. My first diorama for starters, my first attempt at making a wire-tree, the first time I used an airbrush and my first (albeit failed) entry to a competition. And it is the moment to call it quits, declare it finished and present to you for much desired C&C. Unfortunately my photography is still very much lacking :( Oh and the reason I couldn't make it to the competition is that I have to go on a business trip abroad on the very day that it will be held.. Oh well, there is always next year I guess.. Thanks for looking.
  5. Hi, I painted "Eric, the Paladin initiate" as a random mini from Bones 2. I like his contemplative look and pose... So I decided to make a little vignette/diorama by adding one of the graveyard statue from Bones3. I call it "Time to Reflect". The base is an Orange juice cap, and the tree is from Woodland Scenic. C&C Welcome
  6. Okay so Epic may not be appropriate, but I'll let you judge that for yourself. I got my hands on a Dragons Don't Share 2 at Adepticon (thank you reaper Bryan and Reaper Ed!) and I decided to begin a fairly substantial diorama with it. I'm still working on an appropriate name for the piece. I'll have a narrative story to go with it, but the Idea is still changing slightly as I build this. I hope to have this ready for ReaperCon 2016. So to start, This is how one carries a DDS2 home on a motorcycle... And no he will not share with you... On to the actual Diorama! The ideas started when we purchased a Lack end table from Ikea for about $3 from their as is section. We needed the legs but not the top. So I decided that the top would make a great diorama base and it is 22" which is 2" smaller than the size limit for most painting competitions near me (and reapercon). The idea is that an army of Dwarves are attempting to take down a dragon that has been harassing their kingdom. They find the dragon in some ruins near the creek and ambush him. So with this in mind, I started to lay out how I wanted things to be situated. This was a rough test to see how the DDS2 scaled to the table top. I think it worked well. So then it was on to Reaper's website to see about finding the right dwarves for this. I knew I wanted 2 team of Dwarves with chains trying to subdue the dragon. The dragons pose even looks like he is in mid attack so this works well enough. I ordered 6 14596: Kragmarr Guard to act as the chain crews. It will be a fairly straightforward swap from their spears to holding a chin (I hope). I plan to use the dwarf that came with the DDS2 set but not any of the other adventurers. Also shown is 14607 Kragmarr Ram Rider though I'm not sure if he will stay, 14379 Shield Maiden, and 02376 Brag Ironballs. I still need to order some crossbow wielding dwarves and some rank and file dwarves to add to the scene. Plus some dead adventurers and skellys to add to the scenery. right now I have 10 Dwarves in the scene with plans to add at least another 15-20. I'll also be raising the scene on cork so that the building terrain is at slightly different levels and I can add a creek. This is where I am at so far, I have to wait until payday to order more dwarves. I'll leave a nice list of all of the Miniatures I'm using as i go to make it easier. This is an over view of where the Diorama sits now with more dwarves.... Need to re-aim this group I think... Brag Ironballs showing how he got his name... Minis Used so far... 77381: Dragons Don't Share - 2014 Edition (Dragon, Terrain, and Dwarf only) 14596: Kragmarr Guard (x6) 02376: Brag Ironballs 14379: Dwarven Shieldmaiden 14607: Kragmarr Ram Rider
  7. I'm going to start a diorama soon to go inside a snow globe. I want to put snow on the base but seeing as I've never done any sort of basing at all I'm not sure where to begin. The base will be the rubber stopper that is the plug to the bottom of the globe so I'm not sure if that will effect anything or not. I've seen something at Michael's/Joann's called "snowtex" and was wondering if that might work or how well it would work? Any advice as to how to go about this?
  8. Well then - here we are. After I don't know how many hours (maybe 60?) and a few to dry - here's what I made in this WIP thread. ->Let's make a present! Hanseatic League Sea Traffic Control Center<- It came out pretty nicely - only thing I am a bit unhappy with is the glowing effect I tried to do. My first one. I guess I've got to work on that. Anyway. Here we go: (Sign can be literally translated as 'issued')
  9. And here we are - after 48 hours of building time and another 20 or so hours of drying, our beach diorama is finally done. Check here for the WIP Thread ->Let's Make a Present! Combat divers on the beach<-
  10. When my first present - please check here ->Let's present a ... present! Owl Mage<- was received pretty well by our female colleage, my boss asked me to do more. This time the task was to make a present for another colleague who left us. As he was in the military and also is a passionate diver, I thought of something military. What would be a better fit than German combat divers (Kampfschwimmer)? Luckily I found a bunch of German frogmen miniatures and ordered them immediately. When I told my boss what I had in mind, she asked me to include the following elements: 1st: Frogmen 2nd: An owl (of course) 3rd: an exit 4th: a sign that links the colleague to our work. Everything else was free for me to develop. As Frogmen often use beaches to infiltrate or exfiltrate an area, the overall idea was to create a beach setting. So I went down to the beach, spent some hours there swimming, enjoying the sun and making sketches, until I finally had an idea what I wanted the diorama to be like. The owl should be sitting on a sign that warned of mines - but instead of a mines warning there should be an inside joke written on the board we often did at work. The exit should be between two dunes and be marked by another sign. And the Kampfschwimmer unit should be astonished by what they witnessed. So I started painting the combat divers. After that I assembled the owl, used plastic styrene to cut out two signs, assembled them an started painting. Still I had one problem - the showcase I ordered ... *chuckles* didn't show up. That sounds funny at the moment but should be a problem later on. And as I was doing a second diorama at the same time, the pressure increased ... *Insert creepy music here*
  11. And here we are - after 36 hours of building time and another 18 hours of drying, the owl mage is finally done. Check here for the WIP Thread ->Let's Make a Present! Owl Mage<-
  12. Here we go again. If you don’t want to know what led to the whole “Let’s make a present”-stuff, feel free to scroll down to the first picture. I have to admit: I am not world’s best painter. To be honest – I am far away from that. I cannot remember color theory, keep forgetting important steps or read a tutorial just to throw it away ‘cause I cannot imagine how I should turn the advices into actual results. Life is hard … Anyway – it seems that persons in my proximity have caught attention of what I am trying to do and figure that it is actually *good* and from time to time ask me to do some presents. And that’s what I am doing for them. Presents. Often those presents have got something to do with my boss. She is the driving force behind this whole “You do wargaming! You can paint! You make present! Ugh!“—stuff. A specialty of her is to ask me to think of something and prepare something just to then remember me that I have got like 5 days left until the specific gift is needed. Thank you, ma’am! And – oh, yeah – there has to be an owl in it. She loves owls and she wants everyone to know. Therefore a typical process of creation looks like this: 1st. Not much time left 2nd Owls are needed 3rd No owls available 4th panic rises 5th awkward moments are happening 6th The badly needed inspiration comes to mind 7th realization of lacking skill follows badly needed inspiration 8th panic rises further 9th Finally! Owls are available! Construction may begin. So – Let’s make a present. The following present was the very first “big” present I made. I want to run you through the process of creation as it was a lot of fun for me to improvise and think of that whole stuff, and I think it would be a shame not to share it. The present was for a colleague who left us. Normally she would have gotten some kind of standard present from our workplace, but she didn’t want to. She had bad experiences regarding standard presents, so my boss was a bit unhappy. She didn’t want to let our colleague leave without anything in her hands. Normally my boss would have done something on her own. She is a good painter - I guess like Bob Ross (just different hair style … and not so many little happy accidents). But she didn’t have got time, so I stepped in. I had Five days left, and of those five days I was away for two days – not much time to come up with something. So when I came home from work first thing I had to do was checking the materials available. My boss wanted the present to be an owl. Well … as I don’t care about owls (only time I do is when they start screaming at night and keep me awake), I didn’t have got any owl miniatures. And then there was the question of what kind of present I wanted to make. I thought of a diorama, went through some stores in my area, didn’t find any helpful inspiration, and after a few hours of searching the Internet, I finally found what I was looking for: an owl mage. And that triggered a thought on the meaning of the present. Our colleague had been forced to make some hard decisions beforehand, which did not only have an impact on her work but also personal life, and my idea was to give her some kind of advisor to lead her through the upcoming time of her life. I figured this idea to be on one hand quite good and on the other hand to be somehow hilarious, so the idea was settled. Next thing I needed was a showcase. Luckily enough I had some miniature tanks which showcases I didn’t need. One of them seemed to fit the figure and leave enough space to create a small scene around it. Hm. I only had an overall idea on the topic by that time, but finally the whole concept rushed into my mind. Why not make a path, where the owl mage has a decision to make? The decision might be easy – go left or go right? Both paths will lead out of the diorama and therefore he cannot see what awaits him. He asks his crystal ball for advice but that doesn’t provide the answer and so the mage has to decide himself which way he wants to take. So I bought the owl mage and went on my two-day-trip. When I came back, the mage had already arrived. Time for me to start. First things first – I had to take the dioramas measurements and to make a plan … Then I did a first test fitting of all the elements I had thought of and made a plan, just to ignore it and continue with a second test, in which the owl mage was put together with a tree which I took from my forest box to create an outline I wouldn’t be able to read later on and started. A main element of the diorama would be the path. Therefore I had to carefully outline how I wanted to create it, especially as the parting of the ways should be clearly visible. After that was done and put away to dry, the next thing to do was the road sign. Checking my materials box, I found some balsa wood and plastic styrene. Using a scalpel, a rough file and some glue, those two elements became one to make a great road sign. Then I had to let it dry. Next thing to do was painting the owl – but that is a different story for the next post …
  13. Hey I'm attempting something crazy for Gen con this year, and I need a little help. I am doing a diorama for the MHE painting competition, and the title for the piece is kind of an important part of it. Is it common or acceptable to have the title engraved to put on the base? If not, what is a good way to make the title known? This is something I've never done before so any advice (including general diorama advice would be appreciated. I wasn't planning on doing a WIP, just puting the picture up in Show off after Gen con assuming I get it done in time.
  14. So... not having enough WIPs on the go already, my box of Bones lovelies arrived and this happened. The plan is to paint him in blues/whites/greys and MAYBE have him breathing something cold onto an opponent of some sort. Digging through my Bones and the Reaper website for ideas so he might end up on a nice frozen landscape trying to fend off someone. Currently leaning towards a knight with their shield forward or a wizard of some sort. Once the Green Stuff cures, he'll get a thin coat of blue liner and then the real work will begin while I search for his opposition. Thanks for looking.
  15. Hi all, Since I don't have enough projects on the go already , and I've had this idea rolling around in my head since the kickstarter as rolling, I figured I'm start collecting bits and pieces for it. I find these guys look a bit more steampunky/post apocalyptic than Wild West and, other than the witch, want to have them on a yellow brick road of sorts with a ruined landscape surrounding them. I was thinking that a gutted car in the background and have been scrambling through the interwebs in search of something suitable. I'm hoping for something completely burnt out with just the metal frame left, some doors missing, perhaps a touch of glass. Now most of the cars I've found in a quasi decent scale are diecast which will make gutting them a pain, I would imagine. And obviously, I'm hoping to not spend a bomb on a piece of broken decoration... Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
  16. So things were a little rushed in getting this finished a week ago, and I never did have the time to do a proper show off... And as final assembly didn't happen until Thursday afternoon..... and the results.... Thanks for all the fun, comments and following along with this!!!!!! George Forgot to link the WiP.....
  17. Here is my finished "spirit of the forest" diorama. Including a bones bird familiar and metal squirrel familiar from 02756. (The axe was from a Frostgrave plastic sprue - cultists or soldiers?) wip is here Pics Oops - meant to put his in show off. How do I fix it? Mod help?
  18. This was started as a small-ish side project, but ended up being a big-ish project. With a lot of new things for me. The ghost is an old mini that I painted many years ago, and was quite happy with at the moment. And as I started up in this hoppy again, I thought I might build a base for it. I wanted it to look dark or low-light, so used a bit darker colors as I would normally have used, but I still wanted to use colors. I'm really happy with the result, I think it's the best piece of landscape I have made. And I learned a couple new things. A big thanks to all that commented and came with ideas and helpfull tips throughout the process. The Wip thread is here. Figures used; The Ghost: I think it is an Ral Partha, as most of my minies from back then seems to be, or does anyone recognise it? Skeleton: 77018 Reaper Skeleton Archer set, converted. Skulls and grave stones: Ristuls. Vegetation: Army Painter turfts, Noch and some home-made from an old brush. Tutorials more or less followed; Hanging moss on the tree: http://laughingferret.blogspot.com.au/2011/04/to-z-spanish-hanging-moss-tutorial.html A lot of good stuff: https://daggerandbrush.wordpress.com/
  19. Hi all, Crazy idea that has been floating around my noggin for months now is finally starting to come together. Never done anything like this before so we'll see where this leads. Cinder, with gaps filled with green stuff. Her legs are a little bent so I can't quite attach her to her base so I'll use the terrain and pin her where she needs to be. Cinder, 2 hatchlings, some quail eggs and tree bark (rocks) for some of the landscaping. Plan is to have to eggs sitting on a pile of treasure. Going to hit Michael's to see if I can find a suitable base for it otherwise I'll be using cutting something out of some MDF for the base. I had thought to make this "tiered" and have an adventurer climbing up in search of the treasure but I decided to reign myself in as it's my first diorama attempt. Thanks for looking.
  20. EDGE OF OBLIVION After many miles climbing the mountains of his homeland, Torgar the Barbarian had finally caught up to the two thieves who had stolen his family heirloom, his grandmother's axe which had been used to cut the head off the great orc chieftain Yarvak. He had found their trail and followed it through the blizzard. He was raging after he had shown them hospitality and drinks, they had slipped a drug into his drink and stolen the artifact.... Now was the time for the reckoning! "VENGEANCE SHALL BE MINE!!!!" Roared Torgar, after taking the head off the first thief and showing it to the other. "YOU HAVE NOWHERE ELSE TO FLEE TO LITTLE THIEF, HERE IS YOUR EDGE OF OBLIVION!!!!" The lone dwarf dropped the artifact and realized his folly, he could jump off the cliff to his death or have his head removed from his shoulders like that of his friend... -------------------------------------------------------------------- This was a really fun project, it took me a while to get started on it and took me a couple of weeks to finish as I wanted to make it a display piece and be able to enter it into a couple of contests, one of which will be ReaperCon 2017. Torgar the Barbarian, Limited Edition 72mm resin figure from Terrible Kids Stuff Random Encounter! 54mm resin figure from FER Miniature Base scratch built out of bark and milliput along with frit and snow flock Shoutout to Thrym for putting together the placard for me! 22. This was my second diorama that I did for ReaperCon 2016. I started toying with ideas after the Mousling Award was announced and originally pictured a few Mouslings in a cave, totally oblivious to the spider on the ceiling. This changed when I was sorting through some burl wood and came across the piece that I used. I used wolf spiders as my inspiration as they like to make their home in holes and so rather than a cave, I had the Mouslings hunting the spider in a field. It just came together perfectly and I had a blast painting them. I am so addicted to Mouslings now. "The Hunt" MSP Open Mousling Third Place
  23. This was one of my diorama entries at ReaperCon 2016. The idea came to me while watching Once Upon a Time and seeing the "Troll" bridge. This bridge is a toll bridge in Storybrooke that someone renamed Troll Bridge. I was then looking at Dark Sword's Critter Kingdoms Anthropomorphic line and came across the Horned Toad Assassin and thus the Toad Bridge came to be. It was originally going to be a larger piece with a troop of three or four facing off against the toad but it would have taken up most of my carrying case. So it got shrunk down and became just the cat against the Toad. The name also evolved into "Contention of Ownership." "Contention of Ownership" Silver, Diorama, ReaperCon 2016
  24. This is what I painted for Teskeria for the 2016 Secret Sophie exchange. She said she liked dragons and the colors purple and pink. I started with the green dragon hatchling, I wanted one that looked like it was attempting to fly, and this one seemed to be sitting up and paying attention. I built up a little cork hill for Cassie to be standing on, demonstrating with her staff and her arms thrust wide. The base has little hillocks covered in static grass. The bushes and flowers are real dried miniature plants that I pulled out of my dollhouse supplies. Both figures are removable for play. Hope you enjoy!
  25. Hey, another WIP I'll start then most likely ignore for months. I finished Platypod, or so I thought. Then I took pictures and decided, nope. Needs more blending and highlights. See Frumitty and Shoamita to follow I've had quite a few questions about how I created the river on my spring exchange's base. I'll do my best to take their base from start to finish including all my mistakes (cause I'll make them) and how I fixed them. Pictures of the base concept to follow Comments, questions, suggestions always welcome.
