    All Minis Eve

So, for October this year I'm going to attempt to paint a mini a day. This will take the place of Minivember probably from now on. November's have just become too busy for me to feasibly paint everyday. This will be called All Minis Eve! I am currently in the process of making an advent calendar for October. I'll post how I'm doing it and progress, I hope to have it done before October so I can kick things off this year. How it works: I have tons of minis laying around so unless you want to or don't have enough (is that a problem around here?) minis you won't need to buy any (unless you want to). You will need 31. Once the calendar is assembled 1 mini will go in each felt pouch and you pull one out each day then plan, prep, and paint it. You have that one day to do it. Midnight to midnight. I will not get to pick out my own minis as I will have my Husband do it so it'll be a surprise each day. To start I bought: Spooky spider web fabric Adorable ghost ribbon (1.5") Tan felt (three 9"x12" sheets) Black felt (three 9"x12" sheets) Fabric glue I also have handy: Sewing needles Orange thread Fabric tape measure Ruler Scissors Fabric pencil Pen/Sharpie I don't yet have a dowel and ends for it or photo transfer paper. I will edit the above later if I've forgotten anything. Some pictures of materials: Plans: Above is a rough sketch of what the layout will be like. I have cut the tan felt into 33- 3"x3" squares and a 3"x9" rectangle. I will take 1 yard of fabric and affix the squares with fabric glue and sew them on as well for extra hold. I will leave several inches free at the top to put the title which I will cut out of the black felt. I will use a piece of ribbon to underline it and then put the squares below.

    Minivember 2017 Show Off

I finally got photos uploaded to the blog. Here's the link to them so I don't have a super picture heavy post. ETA: Most of the minis are from the Bones 3 KS. Minivember 2017 Here's a sneak peek:

    Sparrow paints a Sphinx

Okay, I promise I'll finish one of these threads one day. But in the meantime I've started painting the Bones Sphinx. I've already painted up the wings, I've just got a few little things to do. I do want to thank @Pochi for the inspiration for the wings. Photos:
  4. Well, I'm finally doing it. I'm going to start painting Ma'al. I think I've gotten enough figured out with Mini Ma'al that I can start. At the very least I'm going to start prepping him for painting...that might take a while. Blue liner and mold line removal are first! Not going to boil him because I can live with the slight bend in the wing(maybe, we'll see how I feel before I liner that wing.) Probably won't post more pictures until after I've linered him.

    Sparrow makes a Mini Ma'al

This idea is stolen (with permission) from @OneBoot. Last year she took a Bones Hydra and put wings on it to paint as a mock up for her own Ma'al Drakkar. It was most fun to watch. Husband loved the idea so much that he had to have one with traditional Tiamat colors to match our Ma'al when I get to painting him. Here is her original WIP: This is my first conversion and will be my first dip into the world of sculpting green stuff. Which I'll need to do to make it look like there are scales around the wings instead of just, well, blobs of green stuff. Okay, that's enough of an intro post so let's get too it. ETA: Sorry in advance in the pictures are big.

    Tools of the Trade

I'm going to be starting a blog series call Tools of the Trade. It's mostly going to go in depth into the tools used but will probably include a few tutorials. If you were reading something like this what kind of topics might you want to see? I'm taking all suggestions currently. This will mainly be aimed at novice painters but could be of good use to others as well, I think
  7. After a poll this seems to be the best place to put this thread. For the most part I'll stick photos under spoilers because my phone likes to make them large. So I bought a sketchbook today with the intent to catalog and show off all of my paints. I thought it was quite the appropriate book to get. First I made a grid on a page. Then added the title to each column: Name & SKU, None, Base, Wash, Brown Liner, Blue Liner. That's as far as I've gotten. Next I plan on starting to fill out paint names and SKU's. Then I will prime the squares with some plain white brush on primer (Vallejo in this case). I'm really hoping that the paper is thick enough to avoid the water from just being absorbed. If it isn't I will go to the craft store and buy a better book with different paper and can use this for something else later. Each column is a different thickness of paint/what I'll be putting it over. So None is straight out of the bottle, Base is thinned enough for a base coat, Wash is thinned down to a wash consistency, and Brown and Blue Liner will have each of them put over the primer and then a base consistency paint over that. I'm going to spend some time filling out the names and SKU's and then I'll get to priming the squares. Might go back and go over the lines with a sharpie or pen to make them a little more apparent where the lines are for my sake. ETA: I already have a spreadsheet of all of the paints I own and then sub-sheets broken down by line/company. I think there is a way to put color samples into the sheet but I've yet to figure it out. So I'm making this so I don't have to pull out all of my paints when I need to color scheme something. I can just pull out the book and go from there. It'll be much more efficient for me.

    Shadows of Brimstone Wave 2

So in the last...year? We have received the second wave of our Shadows of Brimstone Kickstarter pledge. We went all in and opted to get everything. I haven't started painting anything from it. I've primed most of it but just haven't had the drive to do it until now. This is the pile of sprues fresh out of the box. Then the cleaning process. I'm not even sure all of them fit into those pictures, I know the second picture is definitely not all of them, that was just the first wave that got cleaned. There's something like...137? minis there if I counted right. This is in no way everything we have but just what we got in the final wave. Well now the company ran a second Kickstarter to expand the game even more (I already don't know where to put all this so let's buy more!). Which should be shipping sometime this year. That one also, again if I counted correctly, has about 181 total minis. So I'm swimming in minis that need painting so I thought I'd start a WIP to motivate me. I've already got most of it written out and color schemed. The nice thing is a lot of the minis that are groups of 6+ or larger came with painting guides that are optional. I'm opting to use the ones that are available to me. I plan on using mostly the paints that came in the Shadows of Brimstone paint sets by Army Painter with a smattering of Reaper here and there. I'm going to try to get this all done before shipping of the second Kickstarter. Then it'll be time to build and paint those!
  9. Husband has asked me to paint up Isabeau Laroche as Captain Marvel. He saw some pictures of it done on Tumblr a while ago and thought it was the neatest thing. So I am going to attempt to recreate it. When I was initially asked I didn't think I was nearly good enough to pull it off but I think where I am now I can do it. I'll be using this photo as reference: The emblem on her chest will go onto Isabeau's shield as seen in original mini photos.

    Sparrow paints Cthulhu

I started painting up Cthulhu tonight. So far I've just got the base coat on the head and body. I hope to get this done fairly quickly.

    Behir: 77492

Painted this up a couple of days ago, took maybe 3 hours. This is the only decent photo I got but overall I'm very happy with how it came out.

    Dagon

I finished! Unfortunately he doesn't fit in my light box quite right so I had to just use my blanket as a back drop. The lighting could be better also. Overall I'm really happy with him. Spoiled for big pictures.

    Sparrow paints Dagon

I started painting Dagon a few days ago. He's very much still in the beginning stages. All my paints are MSP unless otherwise specified. Here's what I've done so far: Washed and blue liner-ed and started a base coat of Marine Teal. Then a little more work on the fins with Twilight Purple, Gem Purple, and Amethyst Purple but they have a long way to go still.

    Ellen Stone 80003

I finished her. It's finished but not perfect. I could have messed around with things even further and cleaned her up a bit more. I really probably could have left her sitting for weeks trying to figure out what else to do which is when I decided it's done. Pretty happy with the eyes on this one. Also, the chaps were the first time I'd attempted to do distressed leather which I think look pretty good for a first attempt. Probably could have gotten clearer pictures but didn't want to fight with the phone any longer. ETA: C&C welcome.

    TARDIS Christmas Diorama

So as some of you may know I'm making a diorama! This will be slow going for a while as I get the materials and then it should be full steam ahead. I've started by procuring another copy of the "telephone box" since I don't really like the first one I did a few years ago. It's not awful but not up to my standard for a Christmas present.

    Minivember 2017!

It's almost that time of year again! And by that I mean it's almost November. I started this last year in place of doing NaNoWriMo. Instead of writing a novel I paint a mini a day. I have tweaked the rules slightly from last year since I wasn't able to complete it the way I wanted to because life. So here are the revised rules and my calendar. I'm going to try to do this one mini each day but if that fails as long as I have 30 minis at the end of the month I'll consider it a success. Rules: Must paint at least 30 minis (1 for each day) 1 sculpt = 1 mini Prep beforehand is encouraged. No brush restrictions Calendar: I only do this for my sanity and to keep me on track and motivated. This year all but 2 of the minis are from Bones 3. There probably won't be much updating to this until November actually starts or is very near to it. I think that's it for now. Thanks for looking!
  17. Now that I've finished the Frost Giants I'm moving onto something a bit warmer, Fire Giants. Currently I've boiled, primed, and base coated skin on all 5. Several will probably need an additional skin coat but so far so good. Pictures in spoiler.
  18. I'm painting all the giants that came with Bones 3 starting with the 4 frost giants. I'm going to start off by assembly lining the skin and then go back to the queen, who I already have liner-ed, and go from there. Pics under spoiler for size.

    77162: Yephima, Cloud Giant

I'm super in love with this mini. It was so much fun to work on. And I'm VERY happy with how the eyes turned out because that's something I struggle with a lot. The lighting here is not great, I have misplaced the power cord to my light box, and somethings are off color from what it should be.

    77380: Khanjira

I painted this a while ago but am just now getting around to taking/posting photos. He was too big to fit in my light box so I had to deal with the less than optimal lighting in the apartment. I'm really happy with how he came out now that he's done. I had about a week where I wanted to throw him in a bath of simple green and start over but I got over that and called him done. I am really really happy with how his eyes came out though.

    Sparrow paints Khanjira

So I've been painting Khanjira for a long time now. Like for a year-ish now. The last time I picked it up I just wasn't happy with how it was turning out and just put it on the shelf and there it sat. Until now. I've finally picked it back up again, I'm not terribly disappointed in how it's turning out but it's still got a long way to go. I figure by making this WIP thread I will hopefully get it done in a timely manner. And by timely manner I mean by Valentine's Day. No particular reason for the date, it's just a date that I will remember. Anyway, here is my progress so far: Ignore the state of my desk, it's been worse. Also, note to self, stop putting models together before painting them.
  22. Here is a link to my blog where I posted all the photos. I didn't want to just stick them all here since there are quite a few and didn't want to overload people with photos. The photography and lighting definitely isn't the best but I'm working on that. Thanks for looking, C&C welcome. https://sparrowmarieminis.wordpress.com/2017/04/20/shadows-of-brimstone-resin-minis/

    Sparrow paints some resin

Freshly washed, only 4 of the 20 heroes need repaired. The 3 villains still need assembled but I thought it best to scrub them down before gluing. Next up: primer test.

    77290: Mousling Druid

As part of this month's getting to know you thread a challenge was proposed, try a technique you've never done before. For me that was OSL. So I used the Mousling Druid to attempt this. For a first try I don't think it turned out too bad. The lighting in my room isn't great so I hope it reads okay.
  25. Going to use this guy as my first attempt at OSL. This was inspired by Talespinner's challenge in the getting to know each other thread.
