I wasn't specifically refering to the inclusion of faction models, just general force construction. But I agree, for the inclusion of faction models to make sense you need to be able to include at least two faction models of different factions at the most common point values for a game. Currently at 25% a 2000 pt force would be able to include 500pts of faction models which (without looking at the datacards) would be barely enough for a couple of faction vehicles or low-end CAVs.

I'm not so sure I'd want to get hit by a missile with a "dog brain" AI.

1) Most low-end Faction CAVs are still in the 300 point range. You can't even get a Faction SuperHeavy for less than 500.

2) I think 2000 point games are a thing of the past, unless you're doing small demos or some kind of special Open Models Only scenario.

Like I said, didn't have the DCs handy a the moment.

Yep, I think even 3000 pts will be a "small" game of two maybe three sections.

well, yes and no.

I have been able to do plenty with 1500 points, just gets big fast when you want to include supers.

For those of us (like me) who worried about the SA's Independent factions were getting, I can tell you the Free Form doctrine is very, very, interesting. I played an Indie force at GameWyze tonight

1 Warlord
1 Dictator 60
1 Talon OEM
1 Panther OEM

2 Vanquishers
1 Talon OEM
1 Puma

And did all right with it. It got me 5 kills. ::):

Hi,

After looking at the rules, models and factions I have decided to go Independent. I want to resurrect my old battle tech regiment from 17 years (has it been that long, god I am old), Maxwell's Renegade Legion. Looking at the models and rules I am thinking of starting at 1500 with

Attack Section
2 X Falcon, avenger on each
Sultan
Sabretooth
Talon

Gunship section
2 X Dragonfly

4 smoke strikes

Is two sections about right for 1500?

I have recon, superiority CAV's, Arty, Supression fire capabilities, and I like the models.
To the everlasting glory of the Infantry

I added up the cost of your section, and it comes out to 1498 points. You wouldn't be able to afford Avenger upgrades to your Falcons without going over 1500 points.

I'd say it's basically a good mix of models. One thing that stood out is the Sabertooth; it's the only model in your section that has the Shredder SA. What you've got is great for killing hard targets, but if you run up against a section with a lot of Soft models armed with Piercing weapons, you may be in trouble (I have first hand experience in that regard). What you might do is pick a Fire Support model that has Shredder on one or more of its weapon systems.

Just my $0.02.

He's using the OEM Talon, not the Terran version.

Personally I'd trash the Smoke, your points are better spent somewhere else. Change your Dragonflys out for a pair of Ghasts for Kikyus, they'll give you the ability to handle both hard and soft targets.

Your Sultan should be able to handle any other soft targets. You can adjust your AOE down to /2 and hit with a RAV 4 attack. Even those 14 DV APC's won't stand up to a RAV 6, AOE/0 attack for long. Plus its just a damn cool looking CAV!

Yes, the ability to organize half of your sections as Specialist sections makes Independents an incredibly versatile force. I half expected this to be a Psyro type thing as I pictured it working (being able to regroup sections without a second thought, etc.)

I took the OEM version into account in my calculations.

I thought the AOE could only be reduced 2 steps -1 AOE at a time, i.e from aoe/4 to aoe/2 maximum.
same with increasing Rav at the cost of AOE.

My understanding is -1 2 times = 2 steps.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of Circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of Chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Falcon - 286
Falcon - 286
Sultan - 347
Sabretooth - 192
Talon - 169

Gunship section
Dragonfly - 81
Dragonfly - 81

4 smoke strikes - 40

1482 points.
Add Avenger/1 to each Falcon for 6 pts each and you have 1494 points. Actually enough left over to put Avenger/1 on any of the other CAVs too.

My suggestion comes out to
Falcon - 286
Falcon - 286
Sultan - 347
Sabretooth - 192
Talon - 169

Gunship section
Ghast - 105
Ghast - 105

1490 points. Not enough left to put Avenger/1 on more than one CAV though.
