This is a little off-topic for this thread, but in reponse to Adam's question, I have faced lists with a heavy DR component. I used the same (or very similar) list to what I took to RCon to take on an Elven army with 3 Mossbeards. After eliminating 2 of my opponent's 3 Mossbeards by the end of the first activation of Turn 2 with minimal losses, my opponent conceeded the game. OTOH, I used a list with just a single Mossy yesterday, and he was a major factor in winning the game. I was able to keep him undamaged late into the game, and my opponent had no real counter for him at that point.

Just more support for the fact that you are better off with a balanced army as opposed to using a one trick pony.

It depends on what your opponent is bringing really. The DV is usually quite low on DR models, and thus the number of attacks becomes more important than a high MAV/RAV. I find that my expensive DR models do great against low numbers of high quality enemies. Most armies have cheap(ish) soldier models with #MA 3, and the high cost DR models SUCK against an army with lots of those.

It follows that having most of your points invested in high cost DR models is probably not a good idea unless your opponent likes to bring very compact armies. Most opponents do however bring at least a few heavy hitters, making it worthwhile to bring one or two Onyx Golems. All of that is just my experience, I know the performance of DR models varies greatly between gaming groups because of differences in army composition and tabletop layout. IIRC the Tulsa group uses very dense terrain setups favoring rather compact armies and as a result have seen DR models perform very well indeed.

Heh....yeah, that would be my army getting moshed by Mossbeard and DR/2 Danithal (ugly synergy) ::o:

I have been trying to run a predominantly shooty Darkspawn army with limited suceess. Shooty just doesnt seem to do it against DR models. Perhaps Elfisses can pull it off. Any thoughts on making shooty more effective? Totems help with MAV. Many spells help with H2H but not so much for RAV. Fire/barrage/poison doesnt usually help (fricken non-poinsonable constructs!).

Meh, it was a nice trick, but I don't think there was awful synergy at work there; Crusaders are equally capable of using the combo of the Duke and a Guardian Beast to very similar effect.

Overlords just started to put a spell on me and so I quickly created this list. It's designed for Onyx Legion Doctrine. Making maximum use of the WA to controll the gameflow while Ranthe is able to boost the troop with Speed Burst for a nice charge. Merack and his followers going to take down those big models supported by crossbows. Incarnation trying to get rid of those mass footies or charge some serious threat when buffed with iron skin.

This list combines versatility and specialists at the same time. C&C welcome :)

Overlords - 1001P, Onyx Legion Doctrine

Troop 1

General Matisse, Sword of Venom, Spiked Armor

Ranthe, Evangelist of Khardullis

Moraia, Warbride x 2, Sword of Venom x 2

Overlord Warrior x 4

Overlord Spearman x 3

Troop 2

Merack of the Onyx Phalanx

Onyx Phalanx x 4

Overlord Crossbowman x 3

Troop 3

Incarnation of Flame

Army Upgrade:

Luck Stone

20 Models, 2 Leaders, 3 Elites, 1 Solo, 14 Soldiers (11 Melee, 3 Ranged)

NO ONE point over. Take the luck stone off. This is the reason why Albatross Amulet is available for all factions. No more excuses of this army "is only 1, 2 or 3 points over. What is the big deal?"

Maybe they are playing 1001p. We play 1003 and 1136 all the time.

wildger that's not a constructive post...For us it's okay to have 1 point over cuz sometimes we have 999 and so it's balanced.

Better shut up if you have nothing to say about the list. Thanks.

-_-

btw. we use Albatros on 1002+

Now start discussing about the list :)

And your response to him is no more constructive. Sometimes you just need to learn to leave it alone. None of that makes Wildger's point any less valid - it is not a 1K list. Don't expect to play that list as-is at a tournament. If that's how your local group choose to play, fine. But the forums are not your local group, so it is probably fair to say that you should not expect the people here to treat your list as your friends would.

As an Onyx Legion list, it looks pretty solid. Just be conscious of the fact that the Phalanx models are eating up a fair number of points, and that in general, the list doesn't have much speed. You will have control over the Initiative deck, but will be hard pressed to fully capitalize on that.

Also, what's the thought behind putting the Sword of Venom on the Warbrides? With Assassin, Frenzy, and Martyr, they are built to kill other models outright, rather than try to wound and poison them and suffer defensive strikes. I think I'd give them Spiked Armor before a Sword of Venom, and make your opponent afraid to come after them. Or, scrap both weapons, and add a Musician to either one of the troops to get them into battle even faster.

The point is 100% valid. Drop the Luck Stone, and the list looks mostly fine, but I too would lose the Venom swords.

Pretty sure we'll be seeing an appearance from a modurator in short order.

One thing to note... no where in the rules does it say that you cannot take both a luck stone and an albotross amulet. Not saying you would want to, just saying you can.

I'm not a range or magic fan normally, but the idea of having 6 Barrage chances is pretty cool. This list may get chewed to pieces, but could cripple someone within a single round. It would work better as a Merc list with Taletia as they have cheaper crossbows and I like their spearmen better... 7 points is a big difference.

Overlords - 999 points

Troop 1

Andras the Ruthless

Overlord Spearman x 2

Bondslave Survivor x 2

Troop 2

Taletia, Disciple of Ashkrypt

Overlord Crossbowman

Bondslave Survivor x 2

Overlord Spearman x 2

Troop 3

Taletia, Disciple of Ashkrypt

Overlord Crossbowman

Bondslave Survivor x 2

Overlord Spearman x 2

Troop 4

Taletia, Disciple of Ashkrypt

Overlord Crossbowman

Bondslave Survivor x 2

Overlord Spearman x 2

Troop 5

Taletia, Disciple of Ashkrypt

Overlord Crossbowman

Bondslave Survivor x 2

Overlord Spearman x 2

Troop 6

Bondslave Survivor x 2

Overlord Crossbowman

Taletia, Disciple of Ashkrypt

Overlord Spearman x 2

Troop 7
