I like the plating effect on the stalk, but I feel that the end of it might be better with more of an eyelid, so the eyeball is less exposed.

Overall it's shaping up to be a great sculpt.

A good tip for doing something like this when you're not sure quite what to do... Just repeat one of the forms you've already got on the figure just like you're doing with the plates :poke: .

I like the plates on the eyestalks. If you're going for a suspension of disbelief, then how would this creature have evolved to protect itself? My guess is that since it has an exoskeleton on the body it would also have the same thing on the appendages.

Wow that is a great looking beholder. I am not sure why but I have a thing for beholders. I haver never used one in 30+ years of gaming but I just really like them. That one looks great so far.

love the armored plates on the top. Looks like that'll be a fun fig to see all painted up.

Funny you should post today. Today is the first time I've been able to sculpt in about a month. Life's been wicked busy and I've been battling a bout of pneumonia that just knocks me out in the evenings.

I just finished the second concept for the eye stalks and have sketched my third concept. I'll take a photo of the second concept later, but here's the sketch of the third concept for you to comment on for now. When I have all three concepts sculpted, then I'll post them together and you all can help me decide which to go with.

Third concept sketch:

This is the mostly unarmored, gross eye concept. The claws and membrane can close the eyes. One friend commented that I could do this so that when closed the claws come together to form a spike.

Thoughts?

I like the clawed eye idea, don't know how it would look on the rest of the model until I see it though, also like the one you already sculpted. All in all, it's a very good sculpt, congratulations. All I have to say is that the eye doesn't really seem angry enough. Might I suggest you add another armored plate in front of the current front one, to make a more pronounced widow's peak over the eye. Also, I'd have it flared out from the head almost like a raised crest, so that the point of the armor piece is pointing in towards the eye. I think this might help push it over the edge towards that really pissed off look. Though it will also probably make the eye seem much smaller as well, so I'd try to keep this armor plate on the really small and pointy side.

I like the first eyestalk better than the third (although I agree that it looks a bit like a plant stem). Your beholder has a very strong "armour-plated" theme going on, and I think the eystalks should cater to that.

Thanks guys. The third eye is coming along now. I'm about 1/3 done with it. It is a bit more complicated to pull off that the other two. I'm hoping to have it done by this weekend and be able to show off all three concepts. If not by this weekend, then it will have to wait a week as my studio will be unavailable for use next week. That said I should get at least an hour of sculpting in today and tomorrow, which is what I think I need to finish it.

I think you should do at least 3 options for the eye stalks and make 'em interchangeable!

Actually, I am considering sculpting up the top two and letting the end user decide which to use.

End user? Do you have a company lined up to cast this for you? Reaper, by any chance? That would be awesome!

I would love it if Reaper were interested, but no not yet. I have had interest in it from a couple other manufacturers. I have as of yet not committed and don't intend to until it is finished, so we'll see what happens.

OK, I have all three eye stalk concepts finished. I've posted them next to the figure so you can judge them in context. Please chime in on which you like the best and why:

I've changed my mind. Seeing #3 in the green, with the pebbled surface at the base to tie it in with the rest of the beholder, really makes it stand out.

This is fantastic work! It's fascinating watching the sculpting process, you're really good at translating the 2D drawing into a three dimensions! Thanks for posting the updates!
