Are the planes pretty fragile? In the demo almost all the Xwings were missing their cannons.

* Note - Since most people learn best from their own mistakes, I try to make as many as possible, so hopefully I'll learn a lot quicker.

The plastic does seem a prone to breakage, but with care they should be alright.

I'm not so sure I'd want to get hit by a missile with a "dog brain" AI.

As small as those X-Wing cannons are, they'll eventually break off no matter what they're made of. I'm thinking that the way you store/transport them will probably have more to do with breakage than just playing with them tho. Unless you're a butterfingers and drop them a lot.

Listed age is 14+. Has anyone actually played a game yet? I have 3 5th Graders I could like get to play, but I am worried about the complexity of the game.

The rules are not complex whatsoever. Where they will have problems is grasping the basic tactics of dogfighting. Like Sarge pointed out, a lot of it is a guessing game. Since everyone moves at the same time, you've got to try to guess what the other guy is going to do and then make your moves to either get him in your firing arcs, or keep you out of his. Then deciding how to use your pilot's Actions, like Focus, Target Lock, etc. That requires some choices too, but they're not nearly as difficult.

Absolutely. That old phrase "easy to learn, hard to master" certainly applies here.
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

There are several fan-made scenarios already, especially Death Star Trench Runs.

Example:

And for DS terrain:

Or flat: http://skeletonkeyga...Base-Trench-Run

And a player community (in addition to the FFG forum):

My Death Star Trench Run boards:

Notes:
1) The table is too small, hopefully when set-up on the playing table it will fit together better
2) I'll be using blue painters tape on the bottom to keep the sections (6 of them) together better
3) The white bits at the end haven't been painted and skinned yet
4) I haven't made the 'exhaust port' yet, have the graphic printed out, just not assembled
5) I have cut the plexi (2" x 10") yet for flying over the trench
6) The scenario (http://www.outworld-...s-DSTR-v01.pdf) calls for 50" long, this is 60" long (two 30" foam core boards, and 48" wide). I don't know if this will affect game-play yet (there is a timer in the scenario). If so, the white bits (ends) are loose so can be adjusted.
7) I haven't done the turbo-laser towers and power nodes yet, working on those the next day or two.
8) I still need to do the 'lock-on, launch proton torpedoes' square (skinned plasticard?)
9) It isn't perfect, never gonna be, but it should do when complete
10) Graphics (skins for the foamcore) are available at http://www.rpgnow.co...Base-Trench-Run

Picked this up today and played it with my 13 year old daughter. She loved it and I did as well. My 7 year old was watching over my shoulder he thought it was great. I picked up one Y-Wing and one Tie Advanced to go with the box set. Of course my daughter picked the empire. Her first crush was on Darth Vader so she had to play them.

It is a very interesting game. I love that you have to guess a head of time what your enemy is going to do. This leads to you getting out of position at times. But it also can lead to you getting a complete advantage. When we play in the morning we will add the extras ie the secondary weapons and the droids and what not. I think this game is going to end up having a ton of depth. But it is very easy to get the hang of.

My only complaint is I can already see before it is said and done I will be fixing some xwings. The store also had the battlefoam foam insert that fits in the box. that was great
