...and Doc remembers when the finest in the field were not made by Reaper.

Julie Guthrie, Sandra Garrity, and others first became known to me through Ral Partha miniatures. They had the best, in their time. Grenadier, though.... Grenadier had the license.

Ral Partha even made games at one point. I still have a few of the Galactic Grenadiers. Used 'em in my Traveller games...

I really like this ad. Lots of flash and thunder, and NO credit whatsoever for the sculptors. Typical of the day. They do go out of their way to let you know that Wendy and Richard Pini created Elfquest, though...

Always nice to see I'm not the only old Parthaginian still around.

When I was thirteen, I knew where the computer was. A shiny new TRS-80, up at the high school. It was the only one for hundreds of miles around. Naturally, us gamers appropriated it. When we weren't busy with our Atari 2600s. that is.
"Crush, Crumble, and Chomp" may have been the single most boring game ever about a monster destroying a city.....

I remember when that newfangled "Fiend Folio" came out for Dungeons and Dragons. And sure enough, Grenadier made minis for it.

I found the middle mini in the dump table at last ReaperCon. I took it and gave it a fine paint job and a new home. I felt like I'd just rescued Buzz and Woody from the incinerator....

We knew how to paint our minis back then, too. Check out these amazing paint jobs....

There was only one miniatures company in Texas, though... Martian Metals. They printed their ads upside down in magazines, because... well, they were Martians. And they had the Traveller 15mm license; Traveller was 15mm because they published several skirmish games that took place on starships in the Traveller universe, and their games came with starship deck plans in 15mm. Those were happy times, gleefully running up and down the corridors, blowing each other out of our shoes. It's not a good idea to throw a grenade into an airlock, by the way; if it blows out BOTH doors, you're in deep doodoo....

Truthfully? The models are better now. There are more choices now. The market and the hobby are bigger now. And most importantly, nowadays I have more MONEY to spend on all this stuff. But if the future is the UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, then the past is always sweeter in retrospect than it was at the time...

This was a really cool little history lesson for those of us who are too new in the hobby (read "young") to fully appreciate its roots. Thanks for taking the time to post this!

Re-boxing my collection of old Dragon Magazines took much longer than it should have because I flipped through each one to see the ads for figures.

Tom Maier's Ogre on War Mammoth is one that I've always wanted -- it stands up to anything being produced today.

He also had a limited release of a male and female barbarian -- you don't see faces like that anymore and I wonder why. He's so good.

Did Maier or Garrity do the Elfquest figures? Those are all very neat.

Not sure who did the 3 inch Elfquest figures posted above, but I know that my wife, Julie Guthrie, did all of the Ral Partha Elfquest box sets that were released. Superior did the two main characters before Partha got the license.

I love seeing the old school ads. Almost as much as I love my old school catalogs.

I had boxes of Dragon & Dungeon mags, but a water heater explosion ruined the lot.
