Bones Conversion Ideas

Aside from plotting which figures will be getting the first splashes of paint, I've spent a good bit time thinking about which will go under the blade.

 

The main fantasy archetype that seems to be missing to me is a monk PC. The minis that I think might have some potential for a monk conversion are: the crouching ranger from heroes, the gnome wizard from the new 30, the male pirate hoisting the treasure chest, the hellborn wizard, and Juliette. The issue is that most of the humanoid adventurer types are heavily armored.

 

I could also see robbing the wood elf sergeant of the top of his bow and turning him into a druid type, and I am planning to cobble a baby cockatrice out of familiar bits.

 

Any ideas for my monk quest?

The grave digger is getting his shovel swapped out, and maybe the lantern too. He'd make an awesome witch hunter/vampire hunter. Big old sword to lean on, or maybe a crossbow...upraised holy symbol or book? Too perfect

I'm already planning some rough ideas of what I'm going to do to Wyrmgear. A lot will depend on how he actually looks when sculpted, but I've got a stockpile of watch parts that will be used to make him look even more amazing.

the paladin with flaming sword just seems too awesome not to use somehow. Too bad Space Marine Librarians only get shields if they take terminator armor.

That would be totally excessive, but what about customising every single one of them! Or at least, they could be adapt to build battle scene dioramas.

 

Pathfinder's Red Dragon along with iconic heroes Valeros and Seoni are all the models needed to recreate the Core Rulebook cover.

 

I think it would also be easy to swap Kagunk and Nor’Okk’s heads to create a new Ettin and Ogre Boss. Same thing for the Black Orcs, weapon swapping or simple conversions using Reven weapons and shield could look great.

 

Many character could also be converted and mounted on a Dragon or the Griffon. Arms and legs could be repositioned for alternate posture, and so on…

I'm debating whether to add Nythermaul to my order after the pledge manager comes out and try to convert him into a living dragon. It would probably be more prudent to wait until he's sculpted and see if that looks at all feasible to do.

Not really a conversion, but the Pathfinder Red is definitely going to be a blue when I get him. Even the ruins on the base sort of say "desert" to me. Which is the blues environment.

. . . . Whereas my crusaders get them as standard equipment. Although the paladin you mention will probably be a radical Inquisitor.

 

One thing I'm trying to resist the temptation to do; Get a second Nethyrmaul, and try to get him as close to the initial concept art as possible, purely as a display piece - Rock spire, shattered chests and all.

Since I mostly play modern and near-modern settings, I'm likely to focus on converting some of the Dark Heaven minis to look more modern-ish, and to modify some of the Chronoscopes.

 

Dark Heaven:

* Astrid, Female Chronicler (Klocke Classics; bard with guitar): Painted up, perhaps modified a little, to represent a modern "goth-rocker."

* Hellborn Rogue (Bedeviled): Two upraised knives replaced with pistols, extraneous trim and shoulder-pads shaved off, top "armor" turned into a T-shirt. Horns and tail removed and saved for some other conversion.

* Damien, Hellborn Wizard (Dark Heroes): Horns and tail shaved off, possibly given a hat (if necessary to fix the forehead/hair), staff replaced with a gun, putty to cover boot tops to extend pant legs.

* Virina, Female Demon (Big Bad Evil Guys): A bit of filing, putty and/or creative painting to give her some clothes or at the very least "nondescript naked."

* Zombie, and George the Zombie (Undead Horde): Via creative painting and addition of putty and "bitz," turn these guys into Kroid Shamblers for "Reich of the Dead." (I.e., try to hint that they're wearing tattered remains of WWII German uniforms.)

* Flesh Golem (Golems): Give him a helmet and some neck bolts, and make him a Weird War II / Reich of the Dead weird-science experiment.

* Pirate with Chest (Pirates): See how hard it is to remove that chest and give him something else to hold in the freed-up hand. If that works, I might buy several copies of this when it comes out in stores, and use it to bulk out my "rank-and-file" pirate crew for Pirates RPG encounters. (I'll leave ONE with the chest on his shoulder; I just don't want the whole lot of them to be hauling chests, or it'd look silly.)

 

Pathfinder:

* Jabberwock: Putty used to add a vest, to better resemble the original Jabberwocky illustration, for use in "Wonderland No More."

 

Chronoscope:

I already have all 6 of the IMEF troopers based and painted up, so I plan to use the IMEF troopers for conversions.

* IMEF Nick Stone: Remove the rifle, and use this guy as a pilot for my IMEF drop-ship conversion cockpit.

* IMEF Sarah Blitzer: Replace the sniper rifle with Nick Stone's rifle. Replace the spare clip on her back with a backpack. Use some putty to give her some chest armor. Possibly remove head and turn it 45-90 degrees for slightly different look. Paint up as a medic or other team specialist.

* IMEF Erik Proudfoot: Remove the feathers (there can only be ONE Erik Proudfoot!). See if there's some way to re-position the arm for variety. Possibly turn the head, or see if it's possible to shave off the visor and then lower it over the eyes (since nobody seems to have the visor down, and this would look different).

* IMEF Jazz Jenkins / Reggie Van Zandt: Do a head-swap between the two, for a little variety.

* IMEF Torch McHughs: Do a head-swivel.

 

* Nova Troopers: I'm getting two sets of these, and might be able to trade for more with friends. I plan on doing a few head-swivels, head-swaps, etc. (between the helmetless guy and someone else who has a helmet) for simple variety. I've also pondered doing some "corrupted" conversions for some sort of alien infestation, but there are cheaper Clix I could mess up for that sort of experimentation.

* Berkeley, Zombie Hunter: I've already painted up one of these, so I plan on replacing the chainsaw with another weapon from my "bitz box" for variety, and possibly a head swap.

* Rex, Dark Future Hero: I'm pondering using some putty to convert this into "battle-damaged Arnie," circa Terminator 2. I picked up some Cyber-Reavers recently, and was inspired to do a "tribute" figure. ;)

* Rosie, Chronotechnician: I'm torn between giving her a big wrench and painting her up to be all steampunk-like, or giving her a spare IMEF rifle (from the Futuristic Weapons pack) and making her some sort of technician support specialist for my expanded IMEF squad.

Are conversions normally patched up with green stuff? Are there any alternatives if say, you don't want to buy that much green stuff?

Green stuff, brown stuff, Milliput, Apoxie Sculpt, and Magic Sculpt are some types of epoxy putties used to sculpt and fill gaps. There are many others you can find at hobby shops. Green stuff cures with some flex. Reaper sells a small amount of green stuff and brown as well. I think brown is less flexible, but it is not one I've used. The others I listed cure hard and are easy to sand. There are model putties sold for plastic models that may also work for you, but I haven't used them. The same goes for GW's Liquid Green Stuff, which I think is similar to model putties.

      Tried to shoot for a first painted Bones 3 figure, but @Werkrobotwerk seems to have beat me to that (via the Randomness thread). Oh well! At least I can post up as maybe the first Bones 3 figure. Right?
       
      Anyway, spent about two hours on this tonight after I did the unboxing video of my Bones 3 box of goodness. Enjoy!

      Just finished up my Horned Hunter. Base coat is Army Painter Barbarian Flesh color primer. Reaper HD mixed with Citadel washes for the rest. The base is just Citadel texture paint with some dry brushing.

      Don't know why I'm so nervous to put this out there.  Really it's just for fun and no big deal, but I'd like to enter myself into a goblin challenge starting tomorrow, May 24.  Time Tbd.  Khanjira is currently still in the box.  
       
      Tonight I will dry fit, clean, and attempt to fix warping.  Tomorrow afternoon I will begin the challenge.  
       
      Just to be sure: I have a couple packs of round size 10/0, 5/0, and 3/0.  Any of those would be allowed, correct?  They are within the 10 mm long, but not sure where to measure the 1 mm wide. At the ferrule, just the bristles at the ferrule end or the tip?
       
      okay, now to clean the paint area and I'd some colors.

      I have yet to assemble a complete figure from any of the Frostgrave sprues of plastic parts, so I thought I'd start slow with a head swap.  Enter Anval Theicedamned, Evil Warrior.  His head is just begging to be chopped off.
       

       
      I figured I'd swap one hooded head for another so I chose what appeared to be an armored hooded head from the cultists sprue and after chipping away at Anval's neck area, applied the super glue and commenced to hold it in place for several minutes.  Yes, there is a better way, and it involves drilling and pinning things.  Bah, details.  It eventually stuck and I decided on a paint scheme.
       
       Much metallics of various kinds.  Sadly I only have a few.  And a non traditional skin color.  This guy with no visible face lends itself well to an exotic or alien race.  Also, there's some nice detail on that axe.  I decided it must be some kind of magic weapon, perhaps of the air, storm, lightning element kind?  So I applied an unusual color and effect on the blade.  Sparking snow and yes, alien goo.  Also tried to give him a lightning tattoo in alien goo on the back.  
       
      Here is the finished piece.  So how convincing is the new head?
