I have a macbook.

It has iphoto and some other options, but nothing seems to be quite what I'm looking for.

I'm not familiar with macbook...
generally the principle should be similar everywhere. if you have two photos (say 500x500pixels), you need to increase size of one photo to be 500x1000. Well, not the photo itself, because that would mess the proportions, but the background or layer size. now you have a place to copy and paste the second photo.
you should be able to do this quickly even in simple software like microsoft Paint.

I suggest GIMP (I prefer Photoshop, but GIMP is free) - http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

Be a gentleman. It is charming and infuriating, respectively, to exactly the people you want it to be.

My brain is not sick, my brain just is. And sometimes I need a little help to function in a society not designed for my cognition.

GIMP. I use it on both Windows and OSX.

I used to have Fireworks on both, going waaaay back (some of the fill and line options are my suggestions!), but since the government is systematically defunding public libraries, I'm learning GIMP. Bonus that I can use it for my hobby! :) All the stuff I've posted here has run through GIMP.

There is a quick and dirty collage maker in Picasa. The only issue I have ever had with it was that it likes to down res everything to web resolutions, so if big prints are needed you have to get into the preferences and change that option.

Yeah, be careful with Picasa. My dad uses it and I always get these great family photos that are maybe 50 pixels wide. I ask him to send the full res, he says that's it. Then he's always losing his photo collection.

I've tried setting him up a few times (I'm a sysadmin by trade) but he always manages to revert it somehow. Seniors and technology.
