help building a force

Recommended Posts

I am building an independent force for small skirmish play and would like some feed back.

My attack section will have two dictator 60s, an Ogre and a Rhino

My Support section will have three specters and a sovereign, sultan or mastadon.

I would like another section or two but idk what, and I think the other two sections could benefit from some extra models. Any ideas?

If you're using CAV2 I would recommend some recon models with ECM pods. You'll want another attack section. Possibly a third with tanks, or something to flank and harrass with like a recon section or a flight of gunships.

Should I add those recon/ecm models to my existing sections (which I think would be good)?

As for my harasser section what kind of aircraft?

Yes, that way they can more easily stay with the section they are protecting.

For the aircraft, any of the ones with a decent piercing attack. The Tsuiseki is good for this, but a bit slow. I like the Kikyu, but am biased being a big Rach fan. There are others, but can't name them off the top of my head.

I think you meant Kharl, not Kikyu. The Kikyu's a soft-target killer. @Mikel, if you're sticking w/Open models, take a look at the Longbow. You get 2 attacks w/decent RAV vs Hard Targets, but more importantly it has FiST, so you can call down some Air Strikes on those annoying enemy ESM units.

You can never go wrong w/Tsuiseki's though!

You're right, That's what I get for posting before drinking coffee. Not only that, but the Kikyu isn't even a Rach produced model.

Cool scoring some longbows. What recon model do you suggest to work with my attack section and fs section? Also my second attack section I want using inexpensive fast attack units. What do you suggest?

It's been a while since I've used one so someone may want to double check me,

IIRC the model with the Chain Fire Pod (CFP) rolls to see if it hit the target point or if the shot drifted and that model resolves it's attack, models linking to the model with the CFP resolve their attacks using the same target point.

If you want cheap, fast attack units, look at some tanks. A swarm of Chieftains can make a pretty good flanking force. You can put four of them in a squad for just over 600 points. Otherwise if you're looking for CAVs, it's hard to go wrong with the Dictator.

Another one of my favorite tricks is 2-4 Pumas in a Recon or Specialist section. Race them down the table and swarm your opponent's biggest group of models. Their Flamers will AOE everyone in the huddle.

As for Recon models, I'd put either a Panther or an OEM Talon in your FS section. The Talon costs more, and you'll have to give it a CFP which makes it even more expensive, but it will be able to fire along w/the other models. But the Panther is a lot cheaper and already has CFP.  Whenever you make an Indirect Attack, each model has to make a Target Point roll to make sure that they hit where they're aiming. CFP allows a model that's passed it's TP roll to automatically make all of its section mates use the same TP. So they don't have to roll (provided that they shoot at the same TP).

Recon models in non-Indirect Attack sections work a little differently - you don't want CFPs, so I'd suggest a Kahn (or Panther if you need to save points).

here is my paint scheme and my first model. I didnt like how long the stalks were on the missile packs, and the one on the right shoulder looked off, so I made some simple mods that dont change the way the model interacts with terrain game play wise, but enhanced the asthetics imo :)

thanks. HG will always have a place in my heart but considering how much the alpha rules annoy me I think taking a step back and playing CAV for a while will be a nice change. at least until Arkrite finishes their RPG ;)

I have always liked CAV's models, and the game play was what battletech wants to be lol. but the last time I played was in 2002 lol
