Painting Contest - Be a Spaceship Superstar! (ends Sept 7th, 2014)

Recommended Posts

If I do a squad, and want to also enter the squad leader as a single 'cause he's that bad-arse, would that be cool? ( I'm guessing that this will be a 'no', but it can't hurt to ask, right? )

On that note, how about building a diorama so that the figures involved are removable, and entering them as both dioramas and single figures?

No and no.  Treat the competition as you would an physical one.  The mini can only be on one table for the judges.

I understand the rules regarding nudity, what about (possibly excessive) gore? Is this something that should be linked to?

Regarding chronoscope, is zombie apocalypse stuff sci-fi?

There are no official forum rules on gore. If you are really concerned folks might find it offensive, feel free to send me a link to a pic before posting. Since I tend not to find anything offensive, I'll run it by my wife.  ::D:

Unless something happens between now and the end of the competition  , a Zombie Apocalypse isn't reality, so as long as it is a modern style Zombie Apocalypse I'd consider it Sci-Fi.

Took a few pictures as I was packing up.

Here are the winged figures I could find, for Darkmeer.

post-8239-0-32814900-1398995258_thumb.jpg

The Koralon are strange aliens that seen to be part human, part insect and part lizard, depending on the unit.

post-8239-0-21762700-1398995249_thumb.jpg

And everyone needs some winged flying armor.

I also wasn't sure if you could see the two boxes in the back from the original pics.  So I took some pics of those, but decided to put my copies of those models in front.

post-8239-0-75270300-1398995239_thumb.jpg

I've always really liked these, but decided not to keep the ones in the boxes.  Considering I primed the ones I have well over a decade ago and still haven't painted them...

If I remember correctly, the body pieces are resin, and the legs and other bits are metal. Feet might be resin as well now that I think about it.

Going to go paint now.  I have a pair of squads and a few solos to paint...  All the wings look amazing and wow... just wow.

The Bipedal robot (Korvus?) is freaking amazing.  I've never seen anything like it.

The Tiger APC... wow.  This would be fun to do in a "not-mechwarrior" universe.

I look to everyone in the WIPs and Show off.  The vast majority of them exceed my skill level by... a lot.  I appreciate the compliment, but I am FAR from great.  I do better at judgement than painting...  Y'know, the lake of fire and such

I've got some intergalactics set up on their 30mm bases, some greenstuff curing over the integral bases, and...  I'm seriously considering a diorama, which would be a first.

I first started reading this thread because contests are cool.

Then I saw the treasure trove and went  .

And I don't even (currently) have much use for sci-fi minis!!

I wasn't sure I was going to enter, but then I got an IDEA.

It was an idea I had quite some time ago, but abandoned due to my painting skills not being up to it. Now, though, I think I could pull it off. I'll have to practice my straight lines quite a bit, and study circuit boards in-depth. That's all I'm gonna say for now.

Huzzah!

I just realized, I have a Ral Partha mech dragon. If I don't paint him for this I deserve to have him bite off my toes!

Excellent. I love dioramas...that's why the diorama winner gets to pick first!   ::D:

It's great to see everyone so inspired!

You have no idea how relieved I am.  I was half convinced everyone would just go "Old sci-fi crap...boring."

In which case all these lovely figures would have eventually made it to the trade in table at ReaperCon (I WILL make it down there...eventually).

All this enthusiasm gives me hope that some of these will actually see paint, while I'm sure others will get happy homes in the "must have, might paint" boxes of others.

Since I don't have enough projects on the go, I decided to start another one.  When the Bones III Kickstarter came around I really liked the Blackstar Corsairs, so much I ordered two sets.
When the giant box o' Bones arrived I was surprised to see them on their sprues still and in pieces. Not a problem, it just meant I couldn't play with them, err, inspect them when I was sorting my figs.  So they all went in a Ziploc.
Today while pondering which project to work on I noticed them (they were hiding behind another project I have't even started a WIP on yet....).
And tonight while pondering how the Olympics ruin TV for everyone, even when it is night where the Olympics are being held, I decided to go take a look at them.

I found it interesting that all 5 come with the same "accessory" sprue, which contains a bayonet, a belt of grenades?, the visor, a sheathed knife and a gun with right hand.
But 80076 and 80080 come with the same gun on their parts sprue as well.  So you end up with a couple extra guns.
Each guy comes in 4 parts btw, lower torso, upper torso and each arm.  My plan is to do the first 5 as designed, then do some mods on the other 5.  May need to look for some weapons to swap.

At this point these guys are just clipped and friction fitted.  I'll get them cleaned up and glued together sometime soon.  The middle 3 will likely need the right arm and weapon left off until after painting the body.
Not sure if I'll use all of the accessories on all of them or not.

I'm very happy with these guys, glad I got 2 sets.  They will likely play a role in my Savage Rifts campaign at some point.  And maybe the IMEF have a new enemy to battle....

I've been running a Savage Rifts campaign (Pinnacle did a Kickstarter to adapt Palladium's classic Rifts setting over to the Savage Worlds rules).  So I decided I needed some things painted that would work in that setting.
As the Coalition is ever present but I have lots of "guys in armor" I decided to start with some Skelebots (The Coalition's disposable killer robots, designed to look like skeletons, as the Coalition is all about the skulls).
I have a bit of an issue with ordering anything from Palladium these days (Robotech) combined with their existing Skelebot figs being from the early 90s and pretty rough by today's standards, so I went for Reaper's awesome Cyber-Reavers as substitutes.
I ordered a couple of packs at Christmas then found 3 more that were left over from another project.  The plan was for a nice quick tabletop paint job, but it still took over a month, as I kept getting distracted by other things (like big stompy robots, and actually doing game prep).  Finally got around to finishing them yesterday, and sealing them today. @Glitterwolf requested (and provided) a fancy background, so I printed it out and grabbed a Sci-Fi bridge terrain piece for them to stand on.

      WIP is here.

Started these back in October, specifically the Sara Blitzer conversion.  Was working on them at Reapercon, finished them during the Minivember challenge.  Based and sprayed last night. I also completed one more of the Tisdale cousins, from the BoGW.  They are ready for the game tonight.

      From left to right: 80024, 80049, 80014, 80019, 80021, 80010.

I'm going to be running Savage Rifts some in the new year (at least until everyone gets tired of either 1) dying, or 2) being indestructible, or 3) wants to go play some 5e.
For those that don't know, Rifts is Palladium Games "everything and the kitchen sink" game setting; magic, psionics, sci-fi, monsters, giant robots, dragons, aliens... you name it.  Its actually the game I started out my RPG journey on, many, many years ago.  So when Pinnacle decided to Kickstarter a Savage Worlds version of Rifts, I had to pledge.
Since we had an open time (one game ended, our other one is on break due to renovations) I figured we could try it out.
Palladium has some older Rifts minis, and I got some of them ages ago. I'm planning to paint up some of those as needed.  I'm very reluctant to buy any new ones from them (until I get phase 2 Robotech figs, or the world ends in some apocalypse, whichever comes first (I'm guessing the apocalypse)) so I'm also looking for other alternatives (also, the Rifts minis are pretty dated, small compared to the current scale, and even then the scale seems to fluctuate between figs). Suggestions are welcome.
Some of what I'll be assembling/painting are proxies.  I've seen nothing in 28mm that looks much like a UAR-1 Enforcer, but I have a nice big stompy Weird War 2 mecha from West Wind that will be at least (scale) 20 ft tall. I've got a couple of old VOID mechs that should get some paint on them.
And starting out I've got some Reaper Cyber-Reavers I ordered aas part of the 12 Days of Christmas promotion.  These will be painted up as Coalition Skelebots.

Just cleaning them up an removing mold lines so far.  Haven't decided yet if I'm just going to put them on the slottas with a little putty or find some resin bases.  They are just mooks so keeping it simple would make sense, but they are also easily posed so could take advantage of some interesting bases. Bases I'd need to find, in boxes......hmmmm.

I'm a bit of a glutton for punishment, so have managed to talk myself into another rainbow dragon... Since I have ol' Pathfinder Red sitting in the Drawer of Doom and no real plans for him, I thought I'd randomize him (not that I don't have enough other projects that haven't been finished (or even started))..
      So, here goes:
3 Star challenge on Pathfinder Red (#89001)
Primary : Blush Pink (although I might substitute in Breast Cancer Pink since I have 3 bottles of that from last month!)
Secondary: Brilliant Green (needs to  be ordered or fetched from the FLGS - I have Forest Green but that's too dark to match, i think)
Tertiary: Heather Blue (do not have this, but do have a Sample bottle from a past order that is very close and will be used in its place..

I smidged some paint on a sheet of paper for comparison and have decided that Blush Pink is much brighter than BCPink, so I'll probably use the Blush (unless I decide to go thematic again and donate this fellow to a survivor since I know a few).  Also, Forest Green is indeed way too dark to substitute in for Brilliant Green..

Here he is in all his boxed plasticky glory!
