I decided to open a thread for all to use to report your latest mini purchases so we might oooo and aaaah at your shrewd bargaining or clever haggling (assuming your FLGS allows such a thing).

Obviously, this means I made a purchase last night at my Not-so Local but Friendly enough Game Store.

Field Report :: Tuesday, June 4th, 2014 :: Millennium Games, Rochester, NY

I approached the wall of Bones with a smattering of DHL expecting to find little I didn't already have.  Immediately, I find the Bright Orange from Vallejo.

Field Report Side Note :: Non-mini related :: Sort of because it has mini-ships in it

I found the recently released, and on my list of things to buy soon as money in hand, Firefly The Board Game expansion, Pirates and Bounty Hunters.

SCORE!

Now we can have 6 or 7 players on Friday game night.  YAY!

I managed to pick up 2 of the 3 new Star trek attack wing ships last night. Could have gotten all 3 but I am missing 3 of the previous release so i bought one of them.

They aren't supposed to be released until June 11th...

That said, the store I play Attack Wing Organised Play tourny's at is a little behind so I now have a ship that will overpower the scenario we are supposed to play. It should be interesting.

Was wandering through Kentucky last week, and stopped at the Comic Store in London, which had a nice discounted table with.... *drum roll please*  5 Reaper miniatures, all metal, for $1.50 each...  Considering two were trolls, one was the ogre chieftain (the bones one with the face-club), a dwarf, and two wererats...  not a bad stop... Then, in the box next to the minis, is a handful of Castles and Crusades modules...  13 in total, all for $1 each...  SCORE!  Since I was about to pay $3.50 each for them through the Kickstarter...

I had an incredible surprise today, it is mini related and buy-related but not really related... yeah, like that.

During the Christmas offer by Reaper, I bought minis to get SciFi Sophie and the Stocking. Long story short, I got no stocking. We had some talk with Reaper support and then Bryan, who graciously sent me a gift code to make up to it. It was really cool on his part, even when TBH I was really looking forward to the stocking and the promo paint.

Today, however, I got a package with a dozen Bones and a Sample Paint (my first! I will treasure you, mucky dark brown, forever!). So now I have a cool bunch of Bones (none that I had before) to paint! Thanks Reaper!

Excellent reports fellow field reporters.  Keep your eyes out for more acquisitions to report on.

They had several at our game store though I am unfamiliar with the game.  Wish it were closer or I'd check for you.

Another awesome tale of Reaper's customer service.  WTG Reaperbryan!

I think I got that same sample, Willien.

Guess my most recent acquisition was last week. I don't shop in and around town for figures so I was over on eBay looking for some figures to add to my upcoming diorama that I'm doing for Jasper's sci-fi contest. Anyhow, I ran across a lot of old Star Wars figures (10 total) that I immediately hit the "buy now" on. Spent $16.50 for the lot (including shipping) and later did some research and found that the bigger figure alone will sell for nearly 3x as much as the whole lot. I call that a pretty good haul!

Pics if you are interested in spoiler.

Another excellent field report.  Thank you reporter, Oober Nerd, is it?  Welcome to the Department.

I saw the post in your WIP.  Kind of jealous of Chewie and Darth.  I have a trooper somewhere and Han.

But do you have a Kellogg's limited edition Han as a Storm Trooper action figure?

Hmmm?

Thanks Thrym, sure you can call me Oober Nerd if you like, it's a hard name to pronounce.

I think I'm going to be using Darth as part of the diorama actually. I wish it would've come with an Emperor figure, but I'll make it work.

No, I do not have that Han as a storm trooper figure

I am calling you Oober from now on, to avoid reaching up for the numbers on the keyboard.

The Emperor is just a blob with cape and hood, you can do that with putty! Unless you want hands, in which case you will have to find a donor

Hooded figure ... I imagine there are hooded figure types right in Reaper's store that could be stand-ins for the Emperor.

I'll respond to Oober if you guys call me that, just another funny nickname in a long line of funny nicknames.

As far as the hooded figure, he's Obi Wan and I'll just use Darth rather than trying to convert him (he's too big anyhow) and I don't want to use a Fantasy figure for this sci-fi project.

I believe the smaller figures are actually the pieces from the first Star Wars monopoly game that came out in the late 90's.  I had one and never played it so I sold it at GenCon a couple years ago before I got back into painting minis again.....wish I would have just kept it for the minis as I only got a few bucks for it.

I just got in my most recent order from Reaper. A giant, 3 Chronoscope females, and 2 paint triads. They included a sample bottle of dark green that is a shade darker than the darkest of one of the triads that I got, so I am very happy with it. I also purchased two Ral Partha minis off ebay. A cleric and theif, both female.

Welcome, Mr. Hawkins, to the Department.  Your report needs some more details and perhaps pictures and links, but excellent work.  Is that crayon in the corner there?

Oooo!  A dark green eh?  Nice.

Which Reaper giant did you get?

I'm just really proud of this, my first work with an airbrush ever. Maybe it's not the best skill & craft work out there for finishing a figure, but I think I win some points for originality.

      What I learned...
Sometimes, inspiration comes when you think your finished (my son said "I thought you were going for a nebula") Sometimes, your wife says "It needs something iridescent" when you think you're done and she's right. Sparkling Amethyst on the spines Airbrushing means mixing and getting your consistency exactly right - I got lucky on my first try Airbrushing base colors is insanely fast, uses almost no paint and produces something much more even than I could dry-brushing Dry brushing is great for aging/leathering a piece - airbrushing is all about consistency of coverage. Trying to add red-shifted & blue-shifted stars to the star field looked like birthday cake sprinkles. Nature always has better color schemes than I can come up with on my own. I still need to figure out how to layer/thin/build up my colors.

After initial airbrushing with Violet Shadow and Clear Magenta and maybe a mix with aged bonne for the belly.

First pass at layering for the spikes. I've got some learning to do.

Another angle at the "ready for detailing" stage.

My son said "nebula" and I broke out the clear blue and thinned it, but probably not enough.

Here's the "finished" product. I detailed so many stars in the blue areas. Then my wife said "iridescent" and I added Sparkling Amethyst to the spines. It's a great touch and highlights the raised part of the body instead of leaving it the same as the rest.

For scale against another recent work, my lizardman army.

Stuck my thumb in the box of unpainted bones and pulled out a Kyphryxis.

must unbag bag and dry fit, trim mold lines and scrub, but first, the random colors...

15, ah what could that mean?  I'll look later.  Let's roll another.

seven!  Good.  Nicely spaced numbers.  Will look it up in a minute.  For the third roll...  Well darn gotta wait for the full minute so the time shown is different...  Finally!

oof!  One!  Critical miss.  Well, it's probably a boring color at the top of the table.  Let's see what this means:

      15: mint green
      7: olive green
      1: fire red

huh.  Whadaya know.  Time to go see what I've got for colors... (To be continued)

There is a page where I can see the detailed images and the names of each miniatures in Bones 4.
      https://www.reapermini.com/Bones4

Is there such a page for Bones 3? I got a lot of Bones 3 kickstarter minis but cannot figure out the name of miniatures in, say, Graveyard Expansion or Stoneskull Expansion.

Hello again all.  I have to link these photos because Kelpies don't wear clothes down there in the seaweed!  I hope this post works, I've never linked images before.
I started work on the first one thinking it was just something "throwaway" that I did to shake things up after all the undead I had been painting.  But when I started glazing the first one I was just so happy with how it was going.  Looking back now she actually could have used even more maybe, but I was happy with the work anyway.  The sand base not so much, the paint under the sand was too dark and shows through.
The second one, leaning further over spreading her arms, was a mixed bag.  The base is much better, the sand looks more like its natural colour since the paint underneath was much lighter.  She had some wicked mold lines on her that were difficult to remove given her pose, both arms forward and the seaweed in between, etc.  One goes right across her chest above her breasts, her arms have several...  Anyway I just tried not to let them show in the pictures.  Her glazing was perhaps a little more rushed so it could have been better, but I was just so excited to post them because I was so happy with the work on the first one.
Anyway please let me know what you think guys, I think I have done some great learning after attempting my first glaze only three or four miniatures ago.  I am also very impressed with my progress.  I have painted 7 minis since the beginning of August.  That is my most productive two and a half months ever!  I hope I can keep this up, I'm a beginner but have spent a lot on my setup already, I'd like to get enough done to say it was worth it!

Just a bunch of Eastern myth themed minis, mostly from Bones III and one Kenku/Tengu Monk from Stonehaven.

Oh, and some Myconids from Ganesha Games and Bones III plant monsters.  More Mario than myth, I suppose.

      Kitsune close-up:

I like the male Kitsuine a lot more than I was expecting.  His pose, with all its swagger, adds a lot of character.  I also hadn't noticed the sake cup he was holding until I started painting.
