Department of Acquisitions

Recommended Posts

Excellent reports fellow field reporters.  Keep your eyes out for more acquisitions to report on.

I managed to pick up 2 of the 3 new Star trek attack wing ships last night. Could have gotten all 3 but I am missing 3 of the previous release so i bought one of them.

They aren't supposed to be released until June 11th...

That said, the store I play Attack Wing Organised Play tourny's at is a little behind so I now have a ship that will overpower the scenario we are supposed to play. It should be interesting.

They had several at our game store though I am unfamiliar with the game.  Wish it were closer or I'd check for you.

No worries, My next OP is Saturday and entry fee is 1 ship so I will have caught up to the collection this weekend.

Also, One of the 3 I bought is the Borg Tactical Cube which has been shown to have a preorder price of $24.99

I paid $14.99...

Resistance was futile.

Welcome, Mr. Hawkins, to the Department.  Your report needs some more details and perhaps pictures and links, but excellent work.  Is that crayon in the corner there?

I just got in my most recent order from Reaper. A giant, 3 Chronoscope females, and 2 paint triads. They included a sample bottle of dark green that is a shade darker than the darkest of one of the triads that I got, so I am very happy with it. I also purchased two Ral Partha minis off ebay. A cleric and theif, both female.

Oooo!  A dark green eh?  Nice.

Which Reaper giant did you get?

It is actually Ms Hawkins reporting and here is more detail as requested.

The giant is Boerogg Blackrime, Frost Giant Jarl and I got Midnight Blue, Twilight Blue, and Snow Shadow to use as his skin tone. He is going to be my entry in the Fantasy Large Competion at Gateway in September.

The three Cronoscope miniatures are Rosie, Sascha, and Sarah. Rosie is for the Beauty Pageant and Sarah is for Be a Spaceship Superstar!

The second paint triad is the moss one. Jungle Moss, Highland Moss, and Pale Lichen.

I almost bought both those triads last Reaper order.  I paused as I was already well over $50.

Hmm, I should have some Reaper Bones inbound as I type this. Last minis purchase before that was 4 packs of Essex 15mm Gauls, and before that was a pack of Cops and Villains from Pulp Figures. Cash has been an issue lately, so keeping my purchases small...

Edit: figures came today!

I remember seeing him in that WIP of yours. I hope I can remember about it when I start on him in a month or so.

My most recent mini-related purchase were two Secret Weapon Bag O Craps. The last before that was a Reaper Swag Bag. Do those count?

My flgs has an old old old reaper angels box (2) that he's had for years that I'm waiting to go on clearance, he still has some p-65s too. I swear he refuses to put them on clearance because he knows I'm waiting.

My latest grabs were from a half-price bin at the local comic shop... A Warhammer "Supreme Sorceress on Cold One", and a "Tiger Master" from the Mega Miniatures She Warrior line that's obviously from a pretty old mold since both woman and tiger are noticeably flattened... The woman's pretty much a loss since she's only about half as wide front-to-back as she should be, but the tiger's not too terribly bad, even though it does sort of look like a frog wearing a tiger costume, lol...

My latest purchases have all been internet-based.

A 120mm "urban streets" base, and a pack of 5 40mm "cobblestone" bases from Secret Weapon.

A trollkin, and some weapon bits from Privateer Press.

A Scurvy Dog (undead werewolf), VanHelsing, The Fox, and the graveyard vignette base from Reaper.

Boris Barayev (Five Suns Smuggler), Caine (Cyber Troll), Invisible Man, John Bishop (Space Marshal) and a motorcycle, also from Reaper.

I have some ideas for some vignettes. One just 'cause, and one for the Spaceship Superstar contest.

Here's my take on this cute little guy. I tried to do more glazes on him than the way I normally paint, and his eyes are violet, which I think came out ok. Wishing I'd been able to get the huge mold line off his head but oh well. He's still adorbs.

This was my PC in the D&D campaign I played in last year.

I hadn't even realized when I began on these three that they were all from the "Castle Stoneskull" expansion from Bones III.  It was a great set for adding to the random encounters for an RPG.

These guys may represent some of the high-level dangers that one could encounter while dungeoneering in Castle Stoneskull!

The Behir.  I've been wanting one since a buddy pulled one from the first Huge set of D&D prepaints.  They even show up in Pathfinder's "Reign of Winter" and D&D 5E's "Storm King's Thunder", if only I had had this guy in time for those campaigns!

Brain-in-a-Jar.  While I was hoping this would be a human brain, it's still a really cool design.  I wonder why the legs are traditional bendy bones instead of the hard plastic that makes up the rest of the mini (minus the squishy brain), though.

The mighty Minotaur!  Bones has a lot of representations for Minotaurs now, almost as many as Orcs or Goblins.  There's the one from pre-Kickstarter, 2 adventurers in Bones II, and the whole set of Minitaurs coming in Bones IV!  Plus all the Beastmen if you want to count them, I've seen them used as medium Minotaur PCs enough times.

This guy is my favorite, though.  Must be the Gladiator armor.

This is Kassata Lewynn, sculpted by Julie Guthrie.  The base is resin, from Celtic Ruins pack BRCE0043, by Scibor Miniatures.

I love this sculpt and I love the way she turned out.  However, I had a lot of little problems that surprised me when painting her.

Somehow I managed to drop her at least five times while working on her.  I had to put a sheet of foam under where I was working to prevent further damage.  This has not happened to me before, so it was quite frustrating.  Each time, there were little white dings in the paint in the middle of spots where I was blending that required multiple layers re-painted to fix the damage.  I think I found and fixed most of them.

As I was painting her hair, the paint started drying in a completely different way.  It started snowing, so maybe it was the change in weather.  When I did the brown layer, the paint flowed very smoothly.  Part way through painting the first highlight layer, the paint started drying almost immediately.  I am using a #3 Raphael 8404, and it would dry out to the point of no paint flowing within a few seconds.  None of the usual tricks seemed to work (more thinning, flow aid).  It ended up being almost dry brushing, which is why the highlights in her hair look so chalky.

I noticed a tiny dark spot on her left collar and thought I had dabbed black paint by mistake.  I blended the brown over it several times and it just wouldn't cover over.  Then I figured it out -- there was a hole in her collar all the way through to her shoulder.  A lot of the paint I was applying to cover what I thought was a spot of dark paint was actually wicking through the collar and coming out on the underside.  You can see the dark spot in the top picture right below her chin. It could have been fixed with a spot of glaze but I decided to leave it.  Maybe she had a near miss with an arrow at some point.

Her face turned out to be exceptionally difficult for me to paint.  Her eyes have sculpted texture that I found made it very difficult for me to place the irises.  That's why the eye placement looks a little off.  Plus, I somehow managed to paint slightly triangular blobs with narrow point upwards instead of circles.  That is contributing to her slightly cross-eyed appearance.  If I paint this miniature again in future, I will probably try to smooth the surfaces of the eyes to make it easier to make them symmetrical.  Her lips also have a shape that I found very challenging.  There are cute little dimples at each corner of her mouth which give her a nice smile.  I found that if I had the paint thinned enough to paint her lips, the paint was also thin enough to immediately wick into these dimples, which significantly magnified the apparent size of her mouth.  I tried repeatedly to paint her lips smoothly, but I had to paint it over and start again each time.  I originally started with a less bright red for her lips, keeping in with the overall milder colour scheme, but the darker red didn't flow into the dimples so that's what she has.  Correcting this each time had an impact on the blending of the flesh tones on her face, which is why there looks like there is a sharp brush line down the middle of her right cheek.  That's where I gave up trying to fix the blending.  I think if I did this miniature again, I would paint the shade tone of the flesh colour into the dimples, and then fill them in with glazing medium.  That way I might still get the nice smile, but not have to fight with the wicking effect on the lip colour.  I also misjudged the overall skin tone.  I used the Reaper fair skin triad with a very slight darkening of the fair skin shadow as the darkest shade and brightened the fair skin highlight with white.  I think the whole series turned out to be too light and as a result there doesn't appear to be much shape to her face when viewed from a distance.  I should have started with a darker shade overall, maybe by adding a mid-range brown to the darkest shade colours for her skin to increase the contrast.

I created the gem on her right bracer by filling in the rune shape that was there with glaze.  I like the way the gem turned out and the colour, but I shouldn't have outlined the gem shape with black.  I think I should probably used the a darker version of the shade colour I used on the bracer, which was a mixture of nightshade purple and bronzed shadow (from the bronzed flesh triad).  The gem would have still been nicely framed, but the black is just too stark and didn't turn out very smooth.  It might look better if I had been able to make the black margin narrower and rounder.

Anyway, if anyone has any feedback to share about this model, I would love to hear it.

      Thanks,

      Geoff

Here's my final batch of new painted figures.
Bones Giant Centipedes.  A staple encounter for low-level adventurers.
Still inspired by Reign of Winter.  Sadly, Mr. Red got into the snow of Mr. Blue's base!
      Enjoy.
      C&C Welcome.
