Looking for a "Carnivorous Plant" miniature

24 posts in this topic

Hey, as the title says, I'm looking for a miniature to use for a carnivorous plant, and having a hard time finding one.  Has anyone ever found one of these?  I was going to make my own using just the beanstalk piece from Reaper's 10032: Jack and the Beanstalk, heavily converted, but I'm not really much for sculpting, as I've found.

Has anyone ever found a carniverous plant mini from any other manufacturer?  I'm not too picky on the look, just anything that's a plant and looks like it could attack some PC's that would fit in the 28mm scale.

Guys, we can't link to other stores. Give names and manufacturers for an easy Google search otherwise mods will come in here swinging bats.

Armorcast do several, just google armorcast. I have a couple and they're big, and great. They're BIG venus flytraps with additional tentacles.

Dungeon Crawler Miniatures do free-standing "plant tentacles" as well as the aforementioned "Botanimoth".

I don't own Ramshackle Games plants, but I have 2 of their tank kits and they're very good and very cheap. I certainly recommend having a look at their site!

Scotia-Grendel do a 28mm scenics line, and in that is a kit called "fantasy forest" which has a half-dozen plant and fungus monsters. Their resin kits are quite old sculpts but the few I own are very good quality, characterful models.

D&D miniatures had one in one of the later sets.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone, and sorry to the mods if I opened a can of worms asking about other miniature lines.  I think I'll find something that'll work now.

I saw your WIP, Siri, and it was amazing!  I'm too lazy/clumsy to do it myself, though.  No, I think I'll just throw money at the problem and get some new toys in the mail.

It's not the mentioning other lines that's the problem; it's direct links to other web stores that's a no-no.

Yeah, it's just direct linking that's verbotten, probably for legal reasons. It's long-accepted practice to mention, and even show pics. No linking to webstores.

It also means that drive-by link-spammers haven't got the slightest argument. I imagine it's for the protection of the boards one way or another.

The now defunct WizKids Horrorclix had an awesome one that I use.  You may be able to find that one online somewhere.  Very Little Shop of Horrors-esque.

Forumites may remember I painted this more than a year ago.

Which I did, and then I, errr forgot to take finished pictures and post them.  Sorry.  I'm fixing that.

This is Reaper's Bones kraken, #77291, which I believe was once offered in a resin-metal combo but is now sold in the much lighter and less fragile (and less expensive) Bonesium.

When I put one together for a friend, I noted that the front end would make a pretty good carnivorous plant, especially when tucked into a lotus flower-shaped candleholder we have.  It also seemed a pretty good evocation of the Sarlacc in "The Return of the Jedi".

So when I put my own together, I left the body and the front end separate, both for ease of storage and for versatility of use.  (I never did figure out how to put the tentacles on, though.  I tried to follow the store image in both the ones I put together and they still both came out different.)

I also love this model because it comes with a wonderfully elaborate base, the prow of a wrecked ship.  We have been using that as scenery.

Some of the creature has been painted with interference paint, which is either near-transparent or luminously glowing iridescent color depending on the angle of light and viewing.  I've tried to include pictures to show the change.

First are photos with a white background, to show the model clearly (I went a little overboard with underwater effects later).  A few have Dark Sword Miniatures' mermaid warrior, DSM 1197, to show the scale of the model.  This creature is BIG.

Very, very old WIP thread here.
