Waiting on a DVD of City of Lost Children - which Megan has never seen.

We will probably watch it with her mum and cousin.

The Auld Grump

That movie was really, really freaky.

It would make great RPG setting, maybe WoD? Mage?

Celebrated the new year by watching the live-action Ghost in the Shell.

Not as bad as I thought it would be, but it probably helps that I don't think the original was all that good to start with.

The lack of Japanese people in a film set in Tokyo (even future Tokyo) was a little weird though.

Oh I thought it was pretty decent. I especially liked the ending and I help myself saying that it took another approach on the topic and the theme.

Rewatched The Raid and The Raid 2, the action in those films is just amazing!

Gave away my copy of the Russian superhero film Guardians to someone at my last job - it's definitely worth watching at least once. It's fun, and it's pretty. Considering that it's the first ever Russian superhero movie and one of only about five films to come out of Russia that year with an actual Hollywood-level budget, it's somewhat impressive.

It's also only $10 for the dvd at Wallyworld...

Is it a great movie? No. You can't really compare it to the Marvel movies (see previous sentence), but it manages to hit all of the major notes of a decent superhero movie reasonably well. It could have been better with a few minor tweaks, but it's definitely not terrible.

Only three things really keep it from being as good as it could have been  - first, (much like the opening sequence of Watchmen) the movie does a bit of a quick info-dump to set up the backstory during the opening credits but there are certain things (such as some of the characters' powers and the history of the team after their creation) that aren't really explained in the opening sequence in as much depth as they should have been; and second, the major plot twist that allows them to defeat the bad guy just comes out of nowhere with almost zero foreshadowing three-quarters of the way through the film. The movie needed to be about eight to ten minutes longer to paste in a couple of exposition scenes to bring things about the backstory and plot together more cleanly.

And then lastly, from a technical standpoint, the subtitles are somewhat poorly translated and the English dub isn't great, so you kind of have to watch it first in Russian with the subtitles and then in English to truly appreciate the dialogue of some of the deeper scenes...

Overall, though, it's a fun film and definitely worth watching - the characters are interesting, the visuals are pretty, and the CGI on the bear with the machine gun is outstanding.

Oh, yeah, and did I mention there's a giant were-bear with a cybernetic mini-gun?  ::D:

I dunno about anybody else, but I can forgive a lot of minor flaws in a movie that has a giant bear with a machine gun, lol...

Overall, I'd rate Guardians as being about on par with the Fantastic Four movies - the first two, not the most recent terrible one...

Since they also threw in a Marvel-style after-the-credits scene to set up a sequel, I'm looking forward to seeing if they do another Guardians film.

I watched Bright recently and liked it a lot. And want more set in that world.

Jason Bourne (the latest one) (that I haven't seen before) also liked it a lot.

Also watched Ghosts of Mars for the first time....it was OK. Probably would have liked it more if I had first seen it a while ago.

While not technically a movie, although it did feel like one, I just finished watching the first season of Westworld on Bluray.

Really liked it.

While I don't own a copy of the 1970's original movie, I do own the paperback book which includes photos from the movie and I'll be reading that.

I watched Trailer Park of Terror this past weekend.  It has the coolest redneck-demon-zombie-guitarist I've ever seen on film.  I also appreciated that he provided the soundtrack for the movie.  Most of the time when you hear music, it's happening in-universe because he's rocking out atop his trailer. :zombie::lol:

Though parts of the movie are legit uncomfortable to watch and almost torture-porn-ish; so stay away if gore squicks you out.

Atomic Blonde

That's the one I want to see.

I'd like to see the new Star Wars movie tomorrow but I want to rewatch The Force Awakens first.

Looks like it's going to be a late night.
