Recommended Posts

This guy was an experiment in a bunch of things.

Trying to underpaint then glaze - I feel like I learned a bunch even if the results don't show it. Didn't turn out how I wanted it, but I also like the end result.

Trying to do a basic OSL - I think I have an idea of what to do when I want to try it more seriously.

Another try at fluorescent medium (didn't work) - this was the lure and the OSL.

I forgot to add VGC Warlord purple to the gills, and I didn't feel like going back after I noticed.

The WIP is available here

I wanted him to look a bit shiny - so I went over the scales with a gloss coat on top of my usual gloss then matte varnish but for whatever reason this guy just looks wet all the time.

Thanks guys. It's not that I'm dissatisfied, it's just that this guy was about trying stuff and the end result wasn't as important. It's perfectly fine for the table which is all I wanted.

I think I broke down the colors in the WIP.

I was surprised by how quickly the OSL took over where applied. It was so light/ thin. I have a pic I meant to post on the WIP.

I'd felt like I was banging my head on a wall with the main mini that I was working on lately, so I set that aside to work on this as a something simple to make me feel a bit better.  My first try at NMM, too (which shows ).  All I can say is that the contrast really did look better to my eyes until I started taking photos of it.  At least it's somewhat made up for by how nice the eyes and the gem on the left bracer turned out.

More photos and thought process at my blog: link

My D&D group's cleric picked the torch and scythe wielding townsfolk from this pack: http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/townsfolk/latest/03123

My D&D group's cleric is an herbalist cleric. He provides the.... healing... herbs. Medicinal use herbs. He's an exceedingly chipper and happy character, much to the annoyance of the emo necrobard.

But he uses a scythe, and decided to go with this figure. I don't like this figure. It has an ANGRY face. Super grumpy. All of the grump. Terrible choice for that character.

Player told me that I didn't have to go high on the detail with it, so I didn't do as much as my usual. I still practiced OSL and I tried to turn the frown upside-down. I think the result is that he now looks like a very happy mass murderer, instead of just generically pissed.

Anyway, rip it to shreds, lemme know what I can do better in the future. I didn't do the most exciting blending or layering or glazing by any stretch deliberately, though.

I also was using a different location for my camera and I didn't feel like getting a perfect setup, so stuff is crooked and I'm not going to go back and take more photos. *HARUMPH*.

Painted some three weeks ago... Great mini, seems easy to paint but in practice it is quite hard. Not completely happy with the result...

PS. Books and jug are some random casts from HirstArts molds.

I have a suggestion for how some minis are handled in future kickstarters and sold at retail.

Some items in the various bones kickstarters were offered as part of a set or combined with a group and not available on their own. For the most part that makes sense. The items are grouped and to offer them separately means that people might only buy the thing they want and the less popular items might not be justified.

But some things make sense in multiples. It would have been great to have them to have been allowed to be bought on their own, or  in multiples or to be sold in bundles of themselves.

As an example, The wall of fire... I wanted to get 180' of wall of fire recently... at each one representing a 5' square, that's 36 individual pieces. They sell in set of 3 for $5. So the 180' is $60 worth of wall of fire...

Most stores (including reaper) don't have enough in stock.  It would have been very convenient to just stock up on them during the kickstarter. There are a couple figures like that in the bones 4 kickstarter too...

So my suggestion would be for things that make sense in multiples. Offer then on their own, but in a number that makes them usable. Like the wall of fire could have been offered as a "wall of fire bundle" with 10, or 20, or 36 for whatever kickstarter price would be appropriate. So 10 for $10, or 36 for $50... but with the reasoning that one does not need a single 5' wall of fire... This could also be done on the Reaper store... A pack of 4 is fine, but the option to get a pack of 10 or more would be great as well.

      Just a thought.

So this guy was a relatively quick paint job - I worked on him over a couple of nights in between other figures and while things were drying.
I had originally basecoated him a couple of months back when I decided that I was absolutely going to paint something using Breast Cancer Awareness Pink, as I have something like 8 bottles of it at this point. This was the figure that I pulled out of my Bones drawer. I’d basecoated him and then he made his way to the Shelf of Shame unfortunately.
I saw him sitting up there and decided I would just have fun with it.
The lemures do come 2 to the pack and are in 2 different poses, but this one is the only one I have painted thus far.

I hope y’all find him as fun as I do!
