Real life places that would make great models for terrain

Recommended Posts

There are all sorts of cool spots to inspire, most not all that far away. Over on the WAMP Malifaux Group, there's a thread with inspirational sites

http://www.wampforum.com/VB4/group.php?discussionid=202&do=discuss

I'm not sure if the thread will be visible to everyone; [ ... ]

The thread wasn't; what do you need to do to view it?

The storm drains under Tokyo, Japan.

The Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong, now demolished. Closest thing you'll find to a sci-fi dystopian city.

Are those pics that you took? If so, what's the story behind them?

I love the third one, BTW.

the first one is just a flooded cemetery, but there is a super cool one that is underwater in poland (?) that has some really cool history.

the second one is not a picture I took, but I have a very similar one from my trip there. It's Bagnoregio in Italy, and it is amazing. there are only like 15 people that live in the town and they (at that time) still brought a donkey down to get the water.

The last one is just a cool picture that I like to look at how moss grows and drapes and whatnot.

Also, I want to have a picnic there.

Pinnacles National Park in California; not only for its interesting landscape but that it was declared a national park just two years ago, so it won't be immediately recognizable like features of other national parks. Also it's a release area for California condors.

As you know we went to Corfu ( Greek Island) for our vacation.
Let me bore you people with a few pics.

First of all, the efforts of MEOW and R.I.B.B.I.T. agents to stealthily follow us were in vain.
We saw you! @OneBootand @Froggy the Great

Greek Cities/ Architecture/Art and Historical sites, hope you enjoy it. The guy in the black hat you see from behind is the evil Glitterwolf himself!
For security reasons only pics from the back.

If you ever been to Greece and heard that chirping noise all the time?
      Cicades,
This is one of those critters,

      Red Dragonfly

And of course the main event, THE thing why I go to Greece, Lamb Kebab..my girl had Seabass..
Below that Mezes, a mix of several smaller treats..

Can I ask people's considered opinions about the history reference books from Osprey Publishing?

I had been vaguely aware of them Wherever Games Are SoldTM.  One or two have fallen into my lap and proven useful.

But I have heard mixed things about them.  Some, I hear, are more reliable than others.  And I have heard a few rumors that academia doesn't exactly smile on them or those who write for them.  I haven't heard anything about those who illustrate for them, but I have an interest in that too.

Since the InternetTM can be unreliable in these things, I thought I'd ask people who stand a better chance of having some experience.

      Hey all,
Wanted to take a break from painting big stompy robots (CAVs) and get back into something with curves. Someone in my pathfinder group just made a new character, a female slayer... So I used that as motivation to paint up this awesome sculpt.

I looked around and got heavy inspiration from these two posts by Pingo and Evilcoatrack:

      http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/61985-scáthach-scotswoman-warrior-77389-highland-heroine/

      http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69147-77389-highland-heroine-wip/

I decided to try a few new things with this mini, including thinning using matte medium, and a tartan pattern. Tartan is really hard to make look good... If anyone had any tips, I am all ears. I just finished the hair and am really happy with how it came out, and this is probably the best face I have ever done as well (with eyes, no less!). In fact, the irises went on a bit thick, so there is a little dollop that creates a shadow under strong light to mimic a pupil ... Kind of like the opposite of what Roman sculptures do. A fortunate accident.

Anyway, C and C appreciated. I reckon I'll have her done by the end of the week. I'll be trying nmm on the sword and shields. Pingo and Evilcoatrack, thanks for the inspiration!!!

Recently caught this on TV, the Slow Mo Guys filmed a home made fire tornado in 4K. It's quite hypnotic.

Seeing a few of the screen captures going around, in my mind it became *the* flame reference for so many subjects.

It also made me realize something that's been bugging me about the clear plastic fire elementals. They should be a far lighter orange, near yellow even instead of that dark reddish orange.

So in the spirit of ReaperBryan's Redecorate My Office thread, I'm going to ask you guys for some help with part of my basement game room.

Unlike Bryan and his office, I do sort of have a theme for my game room which is basically medieval times meets Stargate address archive meets nerd cave. (I didn't say it was a good theme).

Anyway, my wife, who is a stained glass artist, promised me she would make me six pieces of stained glass of my design for use in the window shutters I started for the three basement windows.  The shutters will replace the shades, and by having them glass, I'll be able to leave them closed, but still hopefully let a lot of light in.

My problem is that for the last three years, I haven't finished my part of the project because I can't decide what designs I want for the stained glass. Which means my wife can't do hers.

The problem isn't coming up with a design or two, but coming up with ideas that look good together, can be paired (each window will have two pieces - one on each side of the shutter), AND can be made with at least 60% lighter translucent colors of glass to allow light in.

So what do you think would look cool for stained glass in a game room?  Each piece would be approximately 12" wide, by about 14" high, and as I mentioned, each shutter would have a right and left piece.  I don't care if the pair in each window are part of the same design, or just along the same themes.  I do want them to be somewhere in the sci-fi or fantasy realm.

I do have to draw all of the patterns myself (or commission someone to do them, which cuts into my glass budget).

here's some pics to give you a better idea:

Here are two of the windows in the corner with the video games:

Here is a sample of my book shelves with gaming, reference and fictions books, as well as some overflow hobby stuff. like Bones creatures:

And finally, here's one of the other walls near the bar area:
