You attempt to pick the lock & you think you have it figured out but at the last moment, the last pin inside the lock fails to catch with your picks. Failed attempt.

To be fair, he never specified that it could be picked by a first level character. ::P:

If it matters, could you elaborate on "different then a normal one."  Are we talking decorative or sized to accept an item we have seen that also has a similar shape.

Bregan moves up and begins slowly, deliberately working on the lock with his picks. Take 20 on Disable Device for total of 26. (Figured if it was trapped Sanishder would have set it off.)

The lock or at least the key hole is shaped differently. Possible key could be the mithral daggers with the notched blades perhaps? As you ponder this question, Bregan starts to work the lock. After about 10 minutes of slow, careful work, you hear a clear "CLICK" as the door is now open!

Opening the heavy iron door, it creaks loudly as it swings inward. Using the torch, you see a large room roughly rectangle-shaped (130 feet x 60 feet). An area along the south wall is enclosed in a cage of thick iron bars that extend from floor to ceiling. Within the enclosure sit seven black iron chests.

To the north, the stone wall has collapsed, revealing a rough-hewed tunnel. There are no other exits for this room.

"Well now, this looks promising." Bregan heads over to the cage and inspects it, perception (d20) 13+7=20

Where about are you inspecting the cage at? Northside, West or Eastside?

Upon looking around the cage, you do see 2 slots in the floor. One is one the eastern side & the other is one the western side of the cage. There appears to be a key slot in the eastern side. You haven't seen the western one, unless you make your way over to it to inspect it.

The eastern key slot, doesn't look like a regular keyhole.

Most likely, it appears to be the same shape as the door. It's not a normal shaped keyhole.
