Legitimate Xvart, or Buglips' Nemesis

Recommended Posts

So to go along with the Goblin Leader that is the hangout mini of the month for April, I decided to do a companion Xvart...

He is a Gobbo from the Ben Seins sculpts, but I thought his head looked a little bare, so after cutting off the broccoli, I decided to sculpt a 'Stahlhelm' on his head....

first layer of putty....

Should I sculpt Jackboots too???

Thoughts and comments welcome!

not sure how sculptors stay sane, as trying to add tiny bits of green stuff in certain places, and have it stick, was driving me nuts.....

looks like he' having a bad hair day right now, don't it????

What are you using to lubricate your tools? I use vaseline to keep my tools from sticking,  If I don't wash it off between layers, it also prevents the next layer of putty from sticking.

So I did moar work on his helmet tonight...

Part of me thinks I would have been better off with a helmet from another mini grafted on, and part of me thinks that the position of his head, the way it is hunched down makes me think it wouldn't have worked...

Not perfect, but acceptable...

He is pinned in a rather unlucky way. Poor guy...

That helmet's not too shabby; good work!

As for the boots: could go either way; jack boots should (in theory) be easy to sculpt, since they're supposed to be relatively smooth and form fitting on the legs, however due to the pose of the figure, you'd need to worry about getting the creases/wrinkles around the ankles right.

Could look good; probably going to be tricky to do.

baaaa....   Green stuff cuts off really easy if it doesn't turn out. Just sculpt the boots over the feet and if it goes sideways, just cut it off and repeat until you get the results you like, or give up.

A really quick and dirty set of scenery using mantics library mini crate.  All told I have maybe 2 hours into the set.  I think it came out pretty well.  I wanted to see what these looked like and the could double for additional scenery on my Saga game.

Air brushes brown primer, followed by a drybrush of woodland brown and then a bunch of colors for the actual books

Hope you like what you see...

I Don't have much to go on with this dragon.  its another one that has been sitting half finished on my shelf forever.  the bottom has some script on the bottom that looks like FWS and an 8.  other than that I don't have any clue where it comes from.

but I finally dusted the mini off, freshened up the red (It was becoming a pink dragon) and decided to display it here.  hope everyone enjoys!

What else to finish off the month of January but another dragon from my shelf of shame?  This is Ollie.  Ollie is from Impact miniatures and is supposed to be a mascot for one of the bloodbowl teams.  Tom Acquired the license to produce him and I got a copy.  I used him to test a number of different red effects and styles while working on another, bigger dragon.  The skills may not have panned out like I wanted but Ollie still came out pretty well and deserved to be finished and shown off.  Pictures are still with a phone camera but at least I got to my light box!  So without further ado:

I needed some drow type critters done up in case my group manages to skip ahead in our current campaign and go straight underground. I also wanted to clear a few more bones minis off my shelf to free up more room in anticipation of bones 4. I know these aren't all dark elves, or even elves, but they all seemed to kind of go together when I put them on the work bench. So three very rapid paint jobs later and I'm ready to do a little underdark-ish campaigning if the group gets there before all the stuff in the darkreach expansion gets to me.

Every once in a while I get the hankering to do some Nolzur's Marvellous Miniatures. I like the monsters and have bought a few, but I can't stand the itty bitty truscale of the humans though -they are simply too small for my tastes, the shallow details disappearing beneath the oft-to thick primer.
Here are Xorn, the three-legged three-eyed earth elemental with a massive maw! There are two to a pack, and I think they are supposed to represent a low-level and a high-level version. However, they are the exactly the same size, so who can tell the difference in power level?
I stuck them on 32mm bases, as they fit well.
They come pre-primed, so I painted them by sloshing on some thin greenish grey, followed by drybrushing with sandy yellow and some bone white. I put some old citadel imperial purple in the maw, and slathered the things in dark tone quickshade ink. Well. maybe not slathered. I made sure to draw off most pooling before they dried up leaving those horrible tide marks.
I did the teeth and claws in bone white, and the eyes with several shades of blue with a white centre and some gloss varnish. Not really happy with the eyes, so I might revisit them at some point.

These also are good as some sort of Cthuloid entities or chaotic daemonspawn somethings for Conan to send back to the Abyss!
