Plastic multi-part fauns (male and female)

Recommended Posts

This project is designed to fund the production of a plastic injection mold, which will enable us to mass produce 32mm fantasy table top fauns.

Summary

After rgdgaming's first initial production runs with the Ghoul King and the Minotaur Brute, we wanted to create our first ten man box set, featuring our faun renders in plastic.

Our goal is to provide a ten man box set so players have the option to field tribal archers, javelin throwers, and miscellaneous warriors using fauns.

Initial Sketches of Fauns Initial Sketches of Fauns

Based off our sketches, our renderer proposed that we use a 3 in 1 pose for the torso, which allows the faun to be armed with a bow, a javelin, or a sword and shield. We initially played with the idea of rocks underneath, but for the convenience of the player we eliminated them. We loosely based the fauns off the idea of thracians, whom were valued for their skirmish warfare.

Faun Faun

Faun without Rock Faun without Rock

The project was promising, but we knew that modelers would eventually want a variety of options to choose from. We started with some different heads and a female counterpart. This led to some sketches below.

Faun Add Ons Faun Add Ons

Females are sorely under represented in many tribal type armies, so we tried to combine huntress concepts, such as the cloth along the thighs, longer hair, and agile frame. We are looking for multiple head types to go with the torso, and a new female torso to match the male counterpart and weapons

Proposal for the Sprue

We have been given multiple quotes for the .CAD design and we have two options: a simple sprue featuring two torsos, with all the options for bow, javelins, shield, heads and accessories for around $200-$300 designed, or we can try one sprue with ten times the amount of accessories for around 2k. The larger we make the design, the more we have to account for the mold design. One sprue with ten models would be ideal.

Who are We Making These For?

The faun box set is intended to offer Kings of War players the ability to field tribal archers and javelin throwers for their Herd army. Though the other is the apparent lack of faun miniatures on the market.

We wanted to open up an opportunity later for a new box set, which would allow the fauns to adapt the thracian Rhomphaia, the miniature version of the deadly falx. With the lack of armor they would make an ideal spirit walker. Put this together, and you have an incredible table top army in the works.

How are These Being Made?

When weighing resin vs plastic we had to pick and choose the option that allows us to provide a great model set at a price that people appreciate. Resin is cheaper to make a mold for, but costs several times more material wise than ABS plastic for example. So we decided to shoot for an injection mold.

Injection molds allow machines to make plastic impressions at a rate that is far faster than resin casting. As a result, it is far less labor intensive. This makes it relatively cheap to use no matter which country you enlist to make the product

  • To design the mold blue print, we are enlisting a .cad designer from http://camppixel.com/.
  • To make the injection mold and miniatures, we are working with http://www.kamings.com/ (has done work with previous kickstarters, and work for our minotaurs)
  • A professional renderer and 3D sculptor.

To avoid wasting the funds on a bad mold, we will be testing the .cad design with a rapid prototype in the US, giving us a good clue to the viability of the sprue. From here we can refine the mold.

What Do We Need?

$2900-$4000 for the mold

$200-$2000 for the .cad design

$500-$800 for the option of extra bits, heads, and torsos

Cost of materials and shipping of the product will be handled by RGD GAMING LLC to satisfy the minimum order needed to make this project happen.

Timeline

A realistic estimate is somewhere between 4-6 months. We have cut down the time it takes with our initial renders, but we have to take into account production time of models, changes, and revisions of the mold. There will also be the communications and forwarding of shipments.

Risks and challenges

Our biggest challenge is funding the initial plastic injection mold for this project. Plastic injection molds are cheaper than steel molds but offer comparable precision, is ideal for mass production, and pairs well with plastic models. Resin offers cheaper molding opportunities, but is not ideal on a cost per model basis.

What we have done to make this project relatively easy is carefully vetting companies and partners for quality. As a result, we have many of the crucial elements a wargaming company needs.

A concept artist
A professional 3D sculptor (for the renders)
A .CAD designer (blue print for the mold)
A production company who can make the injection mold and produce the miniatures
Initial renders and sketches paid for in advance
Most importantly, a retail company who is dedicated to timely results

To insure funds for the mold are not squandered, we will be prototyping the .cad files with local production companies, before green lighting the injection mold. The process is cheap and offers a quick turn around (5-7 days).

We estimate the project will take 4-6 months to allow time for the design and production of the mold, add ons for the miniature sprue and shipping from mainland china to the US. From here we can label and ship products from the United States. A lot of the time will be cut down because of the initial time and investment we have already committed toward the faun project.

Concept for kneeling fauns in line with main poses

Fauns Kneeling Fauns Kneeling

Creator advised this in the comments.

The background of the fauns is loosely based off of tribal concepts of the thracians. They were known to use light armor elements so they could run fast, hence you will see wicker shields (other concepts use animal fur for shields). As was the area, you will see javelins, spears, bows, and the rhomphaia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhomphaia). The females sport a small close combat knife on the leg.

Females are not a stretch goal, we are adding them with the male counterpart pose so we can interchangeably swap out the parts. My job here is to vary them enough so people don't just see one pose.

We have an artist working up concepts for everyone as we speak.

My thoughts too. I want to see some more of the concept art that should be posted soon. I am at $1 right now. but will probably go for the $50 for 3 boxes. I am not a fan of kneeling poses. And I have male beastmen so am more interested in the females. But I like what I see so far.

Hello, I should introduce myself. I'm Robert from RGD Gaming. A critical design challenge is narrowing down the right poses to complement two ranks of men/women fauns when firing a bow, a javelin, and holding themselves in a line side by side with spear and sword. Ill be posting more concept art soon, once I get the idea across to my concept artist.

Using only the poses shown, it would be very static, but can show how we can adapt variations using one torso. Adding a second and or third would make this sprue what it should be.

We went away from the shield wall concept, because the primary purpose of the boxset is light infantry, skirmish warriors etc. The wicker shield is understandable from a fantasy and historical concept, as it can be interwoven by craftsmen, but still be durable enough to be used in combat.

As a Beastmen addict, consider me hooked ^_^! I've never had anything to do with Kickstarter but this looks like I might be joining the cult program. I've been wanting some more neutral looking beasties as of late for reasons (eg, solo game) and these look like they'll fit nicely.

GW's beastmen represented chaos, whereas in Kings of War fauns can serve either noble or dark pursuits. They are a part of a society that is conscripted against a greater danger in the forests they reside in.

We wanted to pair this up with another of our creations, the Minotaur Brute.

Minotaur Brute looks good. Maybe open that up as an addon? I know its on preorder on your website.

I'm liking what I see so I upped to the $50/3 box level.

Swarming out from several enormous dimensional Rifts, a horde of giant invaders, so different in shapes and sizes that they couldn’t belong to the same species, had apparently decided the time had come to bring Humankind to extinction. They got damn close to it too! Two years went by after the first invasion, years in which two thirds of the Earth’s population was wiped out. In order to survive, every single nation left aside any ideal of independence and united under the flag of the Earth Federation, dividing cities into Metropoleis and Refuges and attempting any possible strategy to stay alive…

War Titans: Invaders Must Die, actually tells us a story deeply rooted in a distant period preceding the birth of our Sun, thus revolutionizing the Darwinian concept of human evolution. Our tale makes us discover the Shik’har, a magnificent race of space warriors. For an incredibly long time, the Shik’hars have fought triumphantly against any single species, creature concealing the seeds of evil, and has banished them one by one inside inaccessible dimensional prisons.

      About this project
      Hello,
We are so excited and honored that you are taking the time to consider our project. Our tabletop journey has brought us so much joy and satisfaction to be able to play with friends and family. The quality of the product that our terrain engineers have developed is truly a reward all its own. That being said, we would like to continue as a team to provide versatile, durable, and affordable terrain to everyone who might be interested in it.
We created our terrain with the Game Master in mind. It is our mission to provide a suite of tools that could be provided that empower off-the-rails playability. We look forward to all of the community input so that we can tailor our efforts to bring to life the answers to the problems that we, as GMs, face throughout the multiverses.
With your help, we hope to become an additional tool that can be wielded in the moment it is needed most.

1 Set Our basic set comes with the following:
6- 4x4 inch tile floors 8- 4 inch walls 4- 2 inch walls 6- 1 inch walls 2- 1 inch doors The floor tiles and walls are separated so that the GM can manipulate the field as they see fit. There is no prep time needed because the walls can be dropped in place immediately and configured in any conceivable fashion. Our walls lock together with magic so that they are stable without needing to be connected to the floor tiles.
We designed the walls with playability in mind so that everyone at the table can still have a good view of the dungeon without needing to stand up and peer in. Standard 28mm miniatures are easily visible, and even paper tokens can be seen without requiring additional effort.
By using the standard grid as a basis, we wanted to make sure that our product would enhance your existing setup, not become a replacement.
*Add-on purchases are available for backers who purchase two sets or more.
Our Forest Pack comes with two types of trees. We designed the trunks so that the leaves could be removed for those players or enemies who enjoy scaling the trees to hide or fire from a better vantage point. The $25 purchase comes with two trees, each of our small and large platform trunks.
It is our great pleasure to offer our Caravel Add-on. This vessel connects with the same magic as our walls. The ship is stackable so multiple levels can be purchased if desired. The masts, sail yards, and crows nest are designed so that dramatic swashbuckling action can take place above the vessel itself. The masts can be removed if needed and can be replaced with the mast slot cover, in the event that the vessel is driven by oars or some other means.
The ship is made up of three locking pieces: prow, aft and midship. The prow and aft can be connected to form smaller vessels and additional middle sections can be combined to create mighty warships or trading vessels.
The undercarriage of the ship has four pillar slots that can be used to prop a ship up giving the GM the ability to place lurking sea creatures underneath. This also enables the GM to utilize the ship as an airship if desired, flying above the battlefield and exploring the skies.
The $149 purchase comes with the prow, the aft, and the midship. It also comes with three masts, three mast hole covers and one crow's nest.
Our $99 Galley Add-on comes with the prow, the aft, and the midship. It also comes with three mast hole covers.
The $22 Support Pillars Add-on comes with 11- 3 inch tall support pillars that can be used to raise your ship off the ground or can be used as flying platforms to keep track of PCs and enemies in the chaos of battle.

      About this project
In what we hope is our first set of TerraScapes, we present to you a natural Caves & Grottos core set. With the full range of 10 nonlinear modular tiles, you can quickly create ultra-realistic cavern scenarios for any of your spelunking endeavors! If you've ever found yourself in a cave, you know how under represented they are in the games that we love to play. There is nothing linear about spelunking and caverns aren't flat! Caves are twisted sections of open air encased by cool moist rocky walls.
TerraScapes on TerraTiles! A match made in heaven! TerraScapes: Caves and Grottos strives to simulate these realities for optimal immersion. To maximize the possibilities every tile is double sided! This means you get twice the tiles for half the material costs! Each tile is designed kind of like a table where instead of legs, you have stalactites and large rocks. When they are stacked up, this gives your layout real depth and introduces a whole new dimension for increased strategical encounters. Whether it's for your big boss battle, wargame or random encounter, everything you'll need for an endless tactical cavern layout comes with our core set of Caves & Grottos!
What's in the Core Set?  The Core Set of TerraScapes: Caves and Grottos will contain 9, premium double-sided durable resin 3D tiles and includes 1 exclusive Kickstarter Campaign tile. This is everything you'll need to bring to life any dynamic cavern scenario that you can dream up! We have split and organized the Core Set into 3 subsets of 3 tiles each. You can purchase any of these Packs or the Exclusive Kickstarter Campaign Tile as Add-ons during this campaign!

      Core Pack:A
      Core Pack:B
      Core Pack:C
      Exclusive Kickstarter Tile:1!
Why pledge? How about because these are super schweet man...  I've got a lot, and I mean A LOT of stretch goals in mind.  Most importantly there is a wisdom in crowds.  I can't wait to hear your Ideas for this Project too!  This platform for releasing a product is successful because of the Backers who contribute to its development.  I really want to develop this Project with you.  I'm certain that together, we can make TerraScapes a game night treat!
"So What makes TerraScapes so special?"
Quick Setup: These tiles are not like their linear cousins. Placing down just 1 tile covers the same area as 4 to 8 terrain pieces from other 3d terrain makers. You can create an awesome, natural looking layout in under a minute! You can literally throw them down and get right back to the game. There is a near infinite amount of possibilities. Modular Variety: Any part of any side of any tile can be placed next to or on top of any other tile. Be creative!  They are also double sided! I guess that gives them twice the infinite variety then! HA! Realism: No other 3D terrain can match TerraScapes ability to create the most realistic looking Caves & Grottos. If you have ever ventured outside, you know that the natural world is not linear. This is the beauty inherent in a nonlinear terrain system! It's non uniform but structured design simulates a natural cave effortlessly.  I can honestly say, even I didn't think they were going to work as well as they do.  I'm floored every time I design another completely different layout than the one before. Scale Compatibility: The tile designs have been optimized for 15mm, 25mm, 28mm and even 32mm miniatures!  Terrain Compatibility: Already own a fine cavern set or terrain set? Great! These tiles will enhance ANY other terrain set whether 2D or 3D that you may have already invested in!  There is no guarantee that TerraScapes will be compatible with any 4D or higher dimensional terrain. Game Compatibility: Whether fantasy, sci-fi, western or modern, you may find yourself spelunking and adventuring your way through the deep!  For Enthusiasts AND Hobbyists: We are offering 2 finished options for your set of TerraScapes only during the Kickstarter! The unpainted set is fresh from the mould to your hobby desk. They are ready for prep, primer and paint and of course any other accoutrements. The painted set comes prepped, primed, professionally painted and sealed by TerraScape's own design studio, MGStudio!  i.e.  My monkeys and Me! Durability: Made with 100% Dorkenite (a.k.a very sturdy and hard resin).  I have thoroughly tested the material by throwing my first prototype into my hardwood table in a fit of nerd rage!  Not a stalagmite was injured during this test!   100% American Made! This wonderful product is being produced by gamers just like you. It gives us great pleasure to contribute to your games and enhance the stories being told around your tabletop!  I am both proud and honored to announce that Effin Cool Minis will be producing TerraScapes.  I am also happy to announce that their studio is less than a 2 hour drive from mine!  Moving from production to fulfillment won't involve any overseas partners, boats, shipping containers, or customs.  Scale Modelling made easy! The caverns that you'll discover with Caves & Grottos practically build themselves.  Some of the most interesting caverns I've seen made with TerraScapes were constructed by my 10 year old son.   Shipping Information:
All Domestic and International shipping rates apply!  I will be using a 3rd party Pledge Manager to account for all shipping charges!  Here is a rough estimate for what to expect when shipping a Complete Core set.
