CAV FM: TVP / Flexible / Bonus

Recommended Posts

Building a force in the CAV Force Manager and there is a category called Flexible that allows me to spend more than the 3000 TVP my starter force is set to.

I can't find any mention of this in the CAV:SO book. Is this legal?

I see a similar category called Bonus which appears to be for buying upgrades. I don't see anything in force construction for this either...?

From a noob's perspective the game could use some examples of force construction in a 'stickied' post or 12. :)

10% of your points may be spent on upgrades. In a 2000 point force, 1800 have to be spent on unit and 200 could be spent on either upgrades or units. That's your fixed and flexible.

In addition, you get 20% of your forces value in 'free' upgrades. For a 2000 point force, that would be 400 points of upgrades *only*.  That's your bonus.

Thanks for the reply!

So, in a 3000 TVP game 3000 is a hard cap. The software allowed me to add another 300 points of units and I didn't see any error messages. I probably overlooked it.

I found the rules about 'Force Specialization' on page 42 and 128 - 141 (in case anyone else else finds this thread with a similar question).

I have not found the flexible spending part but I'm still looking.

I ... Don't think that's what likely happened. if you type in 3000, what you get is 2700/300/600.

you probably spent the 2700, the spent the 300 flexible points

J-

I will have the program designer check to make sure its adding correctly but as Club mentioned a 3000 TVP battle would allow you a 2700 point force group, with 600 point of specialization with an additional 300 points of flexible spending if you decided to go that way.

The flexible spending in on p 42, the first paragraph under the battlefield bullet list.

On a side note has anyone found this amount to be too little or too much as they design a force group? If so, either way, please let me know why.

These points are design to simulate  a force group that been out in the field for awhile allowing for more experience and access to equipment, upgrades or just tinkering around but not at the expense of making every model overly superior.

Club is 100% correct. The program gave me 2700/300/600 I was too inexperienced to realize what was going on.

Thanks for everyon'e help!

I was going to ask this question myself, but saw that it was already asked and answered.

I was confused when I was adding a CAV into a list and it seemed to go past the the Remainder TVP, but took points from the Flexible box.

It makes perfect sense when you know what's going on, but was confusing at first.

For the three forces I've built, i think it works nicely.  Any more and it gets burdensome.  For my original CAVCon Templar force, I was able to make all nine units veteran and purchase a few bolt on upgrades (FCS) before using the Templar doctrine that gives ANOTHER 10%.  Things got silly there as I had like a couple orbital bombardments, FIST guy ect.

For my mercenary force, I was able to upgrade a squad of CAV's to ODST trained, as well as making that unit, a unit of four Chieftains and a Cougar Veterans.  I had to keep my unit of Manticores regular due to the limits.  I think the limits are a good thing as it would encourage tricked out Ace pilots if there was too much more.

Well that sounds to me like to many! :)

I like putting the speed mod on imperiators. Makes their assault equipment actually do something.

@hjorhrafn and I are working on our first campaign. I've not really tried the 'upgrades' very much but we intend to allow a selected sub-set of them. I think that'll make for some very interesting games.
