Maledrakh's 3D printed Beholder

Recommended Posts

That is awesome! I want one. But uh, I don't have a 3D printer. Sadness.

I need a beholder mini though. And Reaper's eyebeast just isn't imposing enough to stand in.

In any case, this looks great! And I'll bet at the table the stepping isn't noticeable at all. Do you intend to game with it, or is it for display only?

Turned out good. The principal of the local elementary just got one of those for the school and was interested in printiñ off minis for the kids. Are there any good sites I can direct him to?

Like you said, the stepping isn't really too awful unless you really look for it. I can see it a little on the teeth, but that's all.

Nice model, and cool paint job!

Hello and thank you for your kinds words all!

@sirgourls: I would use it in game if I had the chance. I don't really get to game much these days :(

@tjrez, I can't publish links as that goes against Reapers' policy as they are also commercial sites, but you can PM me.

@Lorathorn: superglue. The support is a paperclip superglued underneath the base and comes through a hole that I drilled and under teh beholder it is bent in a 90 degree angle so the mini rests on a horisontal support a few millimetres before the paperclip is bent 90 degrees again to enter the hole I drilled for it in the beholder. if that makes any sense.

The beholder is hollow (the printer fills it with a wide honeycomb-structure inside for strength) and does not really weigh much. The PLA is quite light.

Wow looks nice and a nice sculpt. On top of this, I am impressed at the quality on a cheap printer.....this may push me to finally order a printer. I have been waffling on buying one for a couple years now.

What a miniature is made of & how it is produced isn't as important as what you do with it once you have it in hand. At least that is my take on the subject.

That is an IMPRESSIVE creation, AND BEAUTIFULLY painted...I love the tongue. VERY WELL DONE!

Some friends are doing this, under their Infinite Dimensions Games, though I'm not involved. The Kickstarter will take place in March and is for digital files for 3D print. If I remember correctly there are no physical rewards. While people should hold off until the details of the crowdfund are released, my understanding is that the core set is done, any stretch goals will pay for the labour of doing the design/sculpting of those items only, so the core set would be ready as soon as funding period is over.
They have a Facebook and Instagram and more for lots of previews (but I'm not linking because I'm not sure what on those sites will break forum rules), and if anyone is attending BreakoutCon this year in Toronto, they will be there displaying.

I'm back to being late again!

Please see the main post here for rules, questions and general chatter, while using this thread to keep a list of links to your show-offs or show-off related comments in a single post: A reminder to please adhere to miniatures posting guidelines as usual.
All the information you need should be here.

Due to the revised format, there will be more than one bonus challenge available for this month. Including a "Hard mode" which Is some combination that may or may not have a source behind it.

      Your challenge is: 9!

      Bonus Challenge the first:
March 26th is National Purple Day (raising awareness for epilepsy) - so paint a figure in monochrome purple. (Yes I know a slime would be an easy candidate)

      Bonus Challenge the second:
April Fools' Brigade - Paint a mini in a completely nonsensical paint scheme or other silliness. ex: CAV with a giant bullseye on it, Adventurer with a shield that says "I'm with tasty ->" or something similar.

Bonus Challenge the Fiv Three, sir, three!
Monty Python and the Holy Grail released 33 years ago in April - paint up a figure to resemble a character from the movie

      Good luck

The game is made up and the points don't matter

[MOD]Please use the full SKU and name of Reaper minis in the titles of your Show Off threads, per forum guidelines. You can find this information on the blister card or in the online store. I also like to give credit to the sculptor in a tag, so people can find their favorites.
We have a high volume of posts generated from this challenge, which is great! But it's also creating a lot of work for the mods. Ladystorm has already urged folks to comply with these guidelines.[/MOD]
As an experiment, this project has been moved to be a bi-monthly challenge last year, that seemed to have worked so until further notice that is our format. The longer time frame theoretically will give less stress to painting, and allow more complex jobs, and more sinister challenges.
      Reaper only? - No.
If going on vacation, can I paint a mini(s) ahead to cover that time frame? - Yes.
Are speed paints acceptable - Yes.
Can it be a mini started previously? - Yes.
      Based or unbased? - Yes.
Do minis for exchanges count? - Yes.
      NEW RULE - Size Equivilancy
(This list is subject to change as bones 3 releases)
Medium and smaller = 1 ea
Simple Terrain (plain floors, walls) = 1ea
Complex Terrain (http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Terrain/latest/03518 or such) = 2 ea
Large (Giants and the like) = 2 ea
Huge (Most dragons, Demon Minotaur Lord, etc) = 3 ea
Bigger (Kally, Khanjirra, etc) = half of quota – rounded up
      Colossal ("Tianot,") = quota
Due to the variable nature of a CAV I compare them against a generic 28mm figure and the Avatar large figure. I take height and bulk into considering if it is worth 1 or 2 figures.
If it's not in this list, it counts as 1.
If you have a question on the size, please post it here, and I'll address them individually.
Much like last year, the idea is to help those of us that normally paint VERY little, to start painting more.
      You challenge begins...now!
      And Our Mantra:
If your name is missing, or you believe your count is incorrect, please PM me. Please note: to make counts easier, you must post in the bi-monthly thread.
      The objective:
To paint 52+ minis throughout the course of the year via bi-monthly quota
(each bi-monthly thread will have the quota listed as well as the master list)
      What qualifies:
      Darn near anything!
      Any material!
Shelf of shame minis from ages long forgotten!
      Exchange minis!
      Speed paints!
Armies! (Though I'd encourage perhaps something outside the army as well)
      Any Size!
Etc! (I think that covers everything)
      Jan/Feb: 8: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/78658-janfeb-rpchallenge/
      March/April: 9: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/79997-marchapril-rpchallenge/
      May/June: 9
      July/August: 9:
      Sept/Oct: 8:
      Nov/Dec: 9:
Again, I request that when tagging your posts, please use "RPChallenge" to help with locating minis from this.

Lithia surveyed her surroundings warily; the battle for this ship wasn't over yet. Thanks to the warning from that ELz-1 protection unit that their unusual passenger had, they were aware of the raiders almost as soon as they struck. The rest of the ship's security and crew had broken up into small groups to ferret out the attackers. Thanks to her background with the commandos, she was scouting ahead of the main group by herself, which was exactly how she liked it.
I found this figure on the melt table at Reapercon; she was headless and had some damage to her back, but I liked the figure and grabbed it anyway. I recently rediscovered her a few weeks ago while I was looking for something else, and decided to fix her up. Her head came from ShieldWolf miniatures plastic shieldmaiden kit, and I covered up the damage on her back by giving her a backpack/comm unit/tech thingy made from part of a GW plasma pistol, and bits of Bones sprue carved to shape.
      Thanks for looking.
