Thanks! Those are some great looking designs, but sadly I need to do something fairly simple as my freehand skills are not up to par for more complicated designs and I am running out of time.

Thanks!

I am still debating on the design, I seem to change my mind hourly. I really want to do something different but I want a fairly simple design and I have not found one that is perfect. I thought I had one but I couldn't picture it with the metal ornament on the shield. So feel free to offer suggestions!

I would go with a simple two color pattern. Something like that green/white half/half shield at the bottom .

or this

With simpler patterns on the side.

Stop reading my mind! I was actually looking at designs to do something similar to the bottom picture. I was also looking at circular designs and I found one I like.

It's not as simple as I want but I think I can pull it off. A dragony ouroboros is also somewhat fitting as I met these friends playing D&D.

Yeah, it has grown on me and I think I am going to attempt it. I just have to finalize my game plan for how to actually do it.

So I bit the bullet and started on the design. I taped the shield and used a cut out of the design to sketch the outline on the tape. I then cut the design away, leaving the open area ready for paint. There is probably a better way of doing it but it works for me. I then applied some Linen White and after it dried, removed the tape. Up next is applying the lines of the design in black and weathering it.

For the design you're doing, freehanding the details is probably the easiest way to paint it. (I like where this is going, btw.)

In case you have other occasions that are a bit different, another technique it to mask the overall outline as you did, then paint that in the line color. Then mask the lines and paint in the "background" color. Then remove all the masking. It's conceptually backwards, but possibly the easiest way to handle a complex design, especially if you're using an airbrush.

Hm. It seems I fell back on following this thread. I really like the outcome of the shield so far.

You chose a nice design, and I am looking forward to seeing it finished.

Thank you for the suggestion, I had actually considered something like that but I thought the curves and fine lines might be problematic. If I had the time I probably would have tried it as Tamiya has masking tape for curves that would probably have worked but I am out of time.

And it is actually done, I cannot believe I was able to pull it off. It's not perfect but it works. Now say goodbye because it did not last long.

As it soon after became this...

Shields of warriors don't stay perfect long. Now some washes and onto the metals.
