We wish you could go, too.

I really think we need to get more serious about replacing the GenghisCon painting track with a Denver painting con. Which probably means we need a real trail boss. Any volunteers?

You buying?

I don't think our budget runs to bringing in* a con runner from New York. If we can get it going, we'd love to have you out for it (on your dime, though ::D:).

If I can ever get Portalfest back off the ground, you guys are naturally invited to invade with painting shenanigans. ;p

Pretty sure we're salty enough not to need any additional brining.

I have learned much from the gardens question...

Question for Rcon attendees: Are you all set to pick your classes for ReaperCon??

I have a list of classes I'd like to take. Since my wife and I haven't decided if I can go, I haven't purchased tickets yet so I'll see what classes are available when the time comes.

Weekend Questions: July 14/15/16...

Forget unlikely Sci-Fi things like phasers, what do you think near-future weapons advances will consist of?

Sci-Fi minis and models, do you have any? How many? (answers may use goblin, elven, wizardish, or Arabic maths; we're not picky.)

Bonus Quest: (to complete by the 16th) paint something that looks like it has a Zap-beam, Death-ray, Phazer-bank, etc.

Double bonus: make it look like it glows somehow.

7/14: I'd hazard to guess we'll see man-portable/usable railguns and sonic rifles in the near future.

7/15: Not yet, but I've pre-ordered Paizo's Starfinder basic books, so I'll probably start getting into sci fi minis and models thereafter.

7/16...I'm not going to have any time this weekend.

Near future: For personal weapons, caseless ammunition, then railguns. Work is ongoing, as I understand it. For vehicle-mounted weapons, railguns. Because of thermal blooming (which requires a great deal of power to mitigate), I think that high-powered lasers will likely be a special purpose item limited to fixed installations and perhaps navies.

ETA: I actually think that space navies are more likely to use smart projectiles than beam weapons, because projectiles don't attenuate with distance and terminal guidance is only possible (AFAICT) with matter.

SF minis: Many. I have ships for Full Thrust, vehicles for OGRE/Dirtside/whatever, including quite a bit of CAV stuff, and a lesser quantity of 25mm and 15mm people (broadly construed).

We'll see about the quest.

1-I would hope that in the future near or otherwise, that we could move away from organized murder unlikely as that is.

2-I have some 40k Orks that some one gave me years ago, & I had some painted ones that I had given to one of our Forumites recently.

That's it; I've never developed much interest in Sci-Fi. I find the idea of Future Wars depressing.

3-Sorry; I don't do future weaponry.

1) Drones, all the drones.

2) The vast majority of my "collection" is Sci-Fi.  I've always preferred Sci-Fi to Fantasy.  I have many 20's of Sci-Fi miniatures and models.  I had an accurate count a few months ago, but recent purchases that have made it larger by 20 or so more models.

3) I was actually planning to make some time for mass painting this weekend.

Teleporting Helium Nuclei  into people from the other side of the planet.

A few. My introduction to miniature painting was buying a sandwich bag full of 40k Eldar from a friend in high school.

Not sure I have anything that sci-fi but I have plenty of translucent sprue thanks to Bones III.

Well, there's your problem.  You were in *that* state.

I don't think it's necessarily a Michigan thing. I ate plenty of chili with meat that had chilly powder in it when I lived in Michigan.

However, my mother would make chilli with not much spice, (But it still had meat.)

A greek style chili is also popular at some 'coney islands'. It would still have meat, but it would have cinnamon and cumin undertones (and it still had chili powder in it.) Greek chilli is more famous as Cincinnati chili.

I found Minnesota to be more in line with serving sauces and chilli that were just tomato sauce, without spice than Michigan was.

I made a SNAFU and double booked myself for the Paint by Die Roll. The great kaiju has used his powers of internet and corrected it. However the Friday event had to be canceled. My apologies to everyone who was so kind to preregister. We have scheduled 2 new Paint by Die Roll events, One Thursday and one Saturday. We also added Survival Speed Paints after dinner every night. They are on the schedule and can be reserved. Again my apologies for messing up people's schedules!

Penny ^ ...New model in blister. ^

This guy is big enough to take up the footprint of four infantry skeletons. The penny is 19mm diameter. The plan is to give the figure a 40mm square, equivalent to four 20x20 bases arranged in a square.

He will count as four members of the unit he'll be assigned to.

Hey all! Last year I did this via PM, and it was a PITA. So this year I will be doing it out in the open. So, those of you who were on the cards last year, or got a card last year know how the game works, so you can skip the next paragraph.

What is Forumite Bingo? It's a convention game I came up with last year and was well received so I will do it again this year. The game is just like what a bingo game would be, but rather than calling out numbers to fill your card, you must go around and introduce yourself to members of the forum who are on your card. Say hi to them, and you can cross their box off. Once you've made "bingo", return to me for your Bingo ribbon. Blackout isn't required, but several people did it for the grins. And there's nothing to 'prove' you met those who you have said you have, just the honor system. You only punish yourself by cheating yourself out of meeting wonderful people.

Last year there were more volunteers than spaces, so not every one was on every card, and hopefully there will be enough volunteers again this year. It made for a good variety. So, this thread is not for signing up to receive a card to play. This is a signup for people who are willing to be on a card. The cards will be freely handed out at the convention. Just come find me, and potentially my wife who may have my materials. Be aware, volunteering to be on the card will mean that complete strangers will be coming up to meet you, and they may not be actually signed up and be on this forum. That happened more often than I thought it would last year. If that makes you uncomfortable, then reconsider volunteering.

So, a bit few ground rules:

Last year I excluded all the Reaper peeps since they are all pretty accessible. The game's purpose is to meet the less visible and vocal. I will continue that. Sorry peeps, we love ya, but I feel that's best. The free square in the middle will be me, since everybody has to meet me to get the card it seems the fairest way. You must be going to ReaperCon to be on the card please! And if possible, the full Thursday to Saturday at least. It's unfair to those whose card you are on if you don't show, or are a Saturday only person. I will not exclude you if you are a Saturday only (or similar) limited attendee. However, people who have you on their cards will get to cross you off without meeting you if you aren't there when they need you for bingo. By replying with the information below, you are giving your permission to use the picture provided and your name provided, and to be inundated with people introducing themselves to you. Once I've printed the cards (much closer to the con than I want), they are set in stone. I can't remove people from the cards, and they're a bit pricy to just toss. Plans change, life happens, and if you become a no-show, you simply become a gimme square and are crossed off automatically by those who need your square. It already happened last year, and well, it will probably happen again. We'll just roll along in those cases. Signups will be open from now until October 1st. That gives me a mere two weeks to randomize the cards and have them printed on card stock. I'll get a mod to lock this thread on that date, and once the thread is locked, no more volunteers will be accepted. One does not need to be very active on these forums to be on the card, but it helps people to recognize you. But I will not turn away anybody that isn't very active if they really want to be on the card. If there's a question about any of these numbered questions, please quote the text since the numbering is automatic and I can't control it if there's an insertion. I will update these rules as questions and issues come up.
All ready to sign up? Good! Here's what you need to do. Reply to this thread with:
The name you want to use. I prefer your forum handle, so people might have some idea of who you are. They can always write your real name across the square as a way of crossing you off. What picture you wish to use for your square. Again, I prefer your forum picture, but if you are someone who changes it often, I might grab one that isn't current so having you explicitly give me one helps. What days you will be at ReaperCon. I'm planning to put the days you are there on the square somehow, and this will help us know if your are there that day or not. I'm only using Thursday thru Sunday, with Wednesday as a simple bonus day.
I think that's it for now. See you all in a month!

So I was at the World Model Expo in Chicago last weekend, meeting Corporea and a whole bunch of Reaperites and ogling some of the finest miniatures painting and dioramas the world has to offer (the PA system requested fluent translators at a number of points).

I took some pictures. Normally I've been putting up galleries on Photobucket, but they turned evil quite recently, so I'm attempting to put some up here to share.

Anyhow, much of the show was historical miniatures, a category pretty new to me, and almost everything was much larger scale than the 28mm I'm used to.

As for the vendors, I regret to say that while for the larger figures the men were young, old, noble, peasant, ugly, handsome, heroic, villainous, commonplace, extraordinary, leaders, followers, white, black, Asian, Elvish, Orcish, cowboys, Vikings, soldiers, and fops; there were far fewer women figures and they were overwhelmingly pin-ups.

Not that I have anything against pin-ups, per se.  I just prefer painting other things.

I did pick up one very nice 54mm armored woman to give a try, only to discover Kuro Cleanbrush had done the same with the same model months ago. Good taste, Kuro!

( @Liverpuncher also put up a thread for his World Expo photos here.)

Here's a couple of @Wren's pieces, including my own rough approximation of 3D photography: cross your eyes and it's 3-D!
