I painted a mini for a BattleMech that has a laser weapon.  Does that count?  (Doesn't glow though.)  It was already assembled and primed but no paint was applied until Friday evening.

Definitely counts. Is BattleMech different from BattleTech?

Weekend Questions: July 14/15/16...

Forget unlikely Sci-Fi things like phasers, what do you think near-future weapons advances will consist of?

Sci-Fi minis and models, do you have any? How many? (answers may use goblin, elven, wizardish, or Arabic maths; we're not picky.)

Bonus Quest: (to complete by the 16th) paint something that looks like it has a Zap-beam, Death-ray, Phazer-bank, etc.

Double bonus: make it look like it glows somehow.

Future weapons:

Drones and mass surveillance. I foresee some countries conscripting autistics into intelligence services to find hidden things in satellite and surveillance data. There's already more surveillance data than can be analyzed by traditional methods and machine learning combined. Which will lead to strange and unique methods for defeating mass facial recognition software: weird hairstyles, body mods, fiber optic jewelry, cyberpunk fashion finally happens in real life. It's the Shadowrun future!

Oh, you meant weapons against hostile powers, not a country's own civilians? Ah. Sorry. There you're looking at the fading of conventional warfare and the rise of cyberwarfare. Bots, AIs, trojans, viruses. Also EMPs. Mertvaya ruka will not be impressed, she might just launch missiles to get people to shut up.

Sci Fi Models:

I found this box of Star Trek ships while unpacking. Also I have an Aquan Prime fleet for Firestorm Armada. People are trying to get me into Star Wars X-Wing so I have access to a communal bookshelf of Star Wars ships, dunno if that counts.

Painting Challenge:

Nope. I'm still unpacking from the move. My painting table is covered in stuff.

A battlemech (big robot) is what you use to play Battletech (the game). I got into it just after they had to change the name from Battledroids because Lucas didn't like it. Sad part is I only own a few mech models because I was a poor kid then. Keep thinking I should buy one of the new boxes with the plastic mechs but not sure if I really want to get back into it.

To expand on what @Zink said, a BattleMech is a type of unit in BattleTech, like, for example, a warjack is a type of unit in Warmachine.  There are different kinds of BattleMechs with their own properties and appearances.  The mini I finished painting is an Uller (or Kit Fox, depending on your faction and how much you care) painted in the colors of Clan Diamond Shark's Gamma Galaxy ("dark green color scheme with blue and silver accenting").

Ok, so mass painting didn't happen but I did finish the test figure for all the Space Marines I just finished assembling. I haven't sealed it yet nor have I decided on how I want to do the base.  Here it is though in it's almost finished state.

Part one: no idea. I'm hoping they figure out magitech soon though.

Part two: um, 20?

Bonus part: did not do.

That is: Warmachine®, the game, from Privateer Press, with the clanky, stompy, steam-puffin' robots (called Warjacks in the gameverse).

Credit to @Gargs for suggesting today's question.

I know nothing if the seemingly voluminous literature behind Games Workshop's ridiculously expensive minis.

Well, okay, I know they have a thing for space marines. And that they seem to hate their fans (judging by the complaints).

Happily Warmachine® is a totally different franchise from an entirely different enterprise.

:cough: Indeed. Yes, I see. :consults the google: The privateer press thing? Wouldn't the question then be, is steampunk sci-fi?

That would (or might) be a more General form of the question. So related questions:

...for July 15: Does Warmachine count as Fantasy rather than pure Steam Punk?

...for July 15: Does all Steam Punk count as a subset of Science Fiction?

Hey all! Last year I did this via PM, and it was a PITA. So this year I will be doing it out in the open. So, those of you who were on the cards last year, or got a card last year know how the game works, so you can skip the next paragraph.

What is Forumite Bingo? It's a convention game I came up with last year and was well received so I will do it again this year. The game is just like what a bingo game would be, but rather than calling out numbers to fill your card, you must go around and introduce yourself to members of the forum who are on your card. Say hi to them, and you can cross their box off. Once you've made "bingo", return to me for your Bingo ribbon. Blackout isn't required, but several people did it for the grins. And there's nothing to 'prove' you met those who you have said you have, just the honor system. You only punish yourself by cheating yourself out of meeting wonderful people.

Last year there were more volunteers than spaces, so not every one was on every card, and hopefully there will be enough volunteers again this year. It made for a good variety. So, this thread is not for signing up to receive a card to play. This is a signup for people who are willing to be on a card. The cards will be freely handed out at the convention. Just come find me, and potentially my wife who may have my materials. Be aware, volunteering to be on the card will mean that complete strangers will be coming up to meet you, and they may not be actually signed up and be on this forum. That happened more often than I thought it would last year. If that makes you uncomfortable, then reconsider volunteering.

So, a bit few ground rules:

Last year I excluded all the Reaper peeps since they are all pretty accessible. The game's purpose is to meet the less visible and vocal. I will continue that. Sorry peeps, we love ya, but I feel that's best. The free square in the middle will be me, since everybody has to meet me to get the card it seems the fairest way. You must be going to ReaperCon to be on the card please! And if possible, the full Thursday to Saturday at least. It's unfair to those whose card you are on if you don't show, or are a Saturday only person. I will not exclude you if you are a Saturday only (or similar) limited attendee. However, people who have you on their cards will get to cross you off without meeting you if you aren't there when they need you for bingo. By replying with the information below, you are giving your permission to use the picture provided and your name provided, and to be inundated with people introducing themselves to you. Once I've printed the cards (much closer to the con than I want), they are set in stone. I can't remove people from the cards, and they're a bit pricy to just toss. Plans change, life happens, and if you become a no-show, you simply become a gimme square and are crossed off automatically by those who need your square. It already happened last year, and well, it will probably happen again. We'll just roll along in those cases. Signups will be open from now until October 1st. That gives me a mere two weeks to randomize the cards and have them printed on card stock. I'll get a mod to lock this thread on that date, and once the thread is locked, no more volunteers will be accepted. One does not need to be very active on these forums to be on the card, but it helps people to recognize you. But I will not turn away anybody that isn't very active if they really want to be on the card. If there's a question about any of these numbered questions, please quote the text since the numbering is automatic and I can't control it if there's an insertion. I will update these rules as questions and issues come up.
All ready to sign up? Good! Here's what you need to do. Reply to this thread with:
The name you want to use. I prefer your forum handle, so people might have some idea of who you are. They can always write your real name across the square as a way of crossing you off. What picture you wish to use for your square. Again, I prefer your forum picture, but if you are someone who changes it often, I might grab one that isn't current so having you explicitly give me one helps. What days you will be at ReaperCon. I'm planning to put the days you are there on the square somehow, and this will help us know if your are there that day or not. I'm only using Thursday thru Sunday, with Wednesday as a simple bonus day.
I think that's it for now. See you all in a month!

So I was at the World Model Expo in Chicago last weekend, meeting Corporea and a whole bunch of Reaperites and ogling some of the finest miniatures painting and dioramas the world has to offer (the PA system requested fluent translators at a number of points).

I took some pictures. Normally I've been putting up galleries on Photobucket, but they turned evil quite recently, so I'm attempting to put some up here to share.

Anyhow, much of the show was historical miniatures, a category pretty new to me, and almost everything was much larger scale than the 28mm I'm used to.

As for the vendors, I regret to say that while for the larger figures the men were young, old, noble, peasant, ugly, handsome, heroic, villainous, commonplace, extraordinary, leaders, followers, white, black, Asian, Elvish, Orcish, cowboys, Vikings, soldiers, and fops; there were far fewer women figures and they were overwhelmingly pin-ups.

Not that I have anything against pin-ups, per se.  I just prefer painting other things.

I did pick up one very nice 54mm armored woman to give a try, only to discover Kuro Cleanbrush had done the same with the same model months ago. Good taste, Kuro!

( @Liverpuncher also put up a thread for his World Expo photos here.)

Here's a couple of @Wren's pieces, including my own rough approximation of 3D photography: cross your eyes and it's 3-D!

      Any forumites planning to attend?
I'll be there hanging around the Reaper Paint and Take.
I know a couple of forumites who will be there but it's always Grrreat to meet more.
