Conan: The Book of Set

Recommended Posts

This is a small follow on campaign to the Conan kickstarter. It is only running 5 days (4 left). The only new offering is the Book of Set, a scenario/art book. They are also offering leftovers from the first project, king pledges and all-in pledges. The book looks pretty good, a 100 page hardcover with 50 pages of scenarios and the rest devoted to concept art + painted minis and descriptions/background for $18+shipping ($30 total to Canada).

They are promising a quick turnaround, expecting to ship in November.

Only played the game once ... it's too complicated for the taste of my wife and Kids (but that's because it's almost a skirmish and not a pure boardgame?).

The miniatures: Mixed bag. Some of them are not really good, most I'd say are CMON quality (which I consider paintable, but that's just me).

Carp!

Forgot to look at this one yesterday and, unsurprisingly, the very small amount of All-in pledges have gone already.

Oh well, at least I'll have the money for their Batman game now.

Thanks for sharing this.

Is the game good?  Do the rules work well?

What is the quality of the miniatures like?  Paintable, or board game quality?

I like the game. The mechanics are not like anything I've seen. It combines gem/resource management with dice rolling and can be tricky until you get the hang of it. A couple of the scenarios seem unbalanced, but for the most part they are quite challenging. It is a versus game, with one player running the monsters and the others playing individual heroes. It is a very different game for either side, but both sides have fun. My biggest complaint is the lack of scenarios. There are a dozen or so scenarios in the game book, but there is only one 2 player and two 3 player scenarios. That's why I'm glad to see this book, 20 more scenarios is great, especially the seven 3 player ones. I have a couple friends who are always looking for something to do.

Knight of the Dinner Table is right about the minis, most are pretty good with a few weaker ones.

Thank you!

I was just looking at the table of contents for the new scenarios and it appears that some of them require KS exclusive add-ons, which are already all snatched up.  So unfortunately ebay looks like a better option ....

Monolith will also have another Conan KS in 2019.

They've kindly added an unlimited Book of Set pledge which is expecting a delivery in Feb since the community freaked out that it was a limited supply and a lot of people didn't get one. Talk about underestimating the demand lol. I don't know why they didn't just have a wave 2 pledge with the unlimited from the start. Could have avoided a turdstorm.

I'm currently backing, but not sure I'll stay in.  Mostly I care about the scenarios, and those are all going to be free on their website.  I already have the new Conan RPG, so I have lore covered there, I think.  And I'm not a huge fan of Martin Grandbarbe's painting style.

As for the game itself, my group loves it!  Challenging no matter what side you're on, and the resource management really makes every decision count.  And I agree with the minis assessments.  Sadly, it's typically the player characters that have the worst detail in my opinion.  But maybe that's just the colored plastic.

After a successful 1st kickstarter project earlier in the year I am back with a second.
This time I am looking to extend my existing range of 28mm scenic bases with 3 further lines. I already make bases as part of my business and have paved bases, lava bases etc. along with various bits of terrain in my range already.
Moonkraft is a fairly new start up and I am looking to add many many more goodies to what I already sell. I have a brain overflowing with ideas, the only trouble is deciding which to do 1st.
If you are like me and are a miniature painter and gamer, then you already know that a good base will give you miniature the finish you want and can really make or break a good bit of painting. Also this bit of modelling can be a little tedious and time consuming and if you are painting a new army those minutes soon add up and turn into hours.
I have created 3 new sets of bases, Rocky outcrops, Skulls and Rocks and my personal favourite Atlantian Temple Ruins. I need to raise just £500 for the moulding costs to produce all 3 of these sets of bases. which I will add to my growing range of terrain and bases.
The bases were sculpted by myself and I have made them in 3 sizes, 25mm, 30mm & 40mm so they should fit all the sizes you require.
The pictures don't do them justice.
25mm Temple bases 30mm Temple Bases 40mm Temple Bases 25mm Skull & Rock Bases 30mm Skull & Rock Bases 40mm Skull & Rock Bases 25mm Rocky Outcrop Bases 30mm Rocky Outcrop Bases 40mm Rocky Outcrop Bases I do things the old fashioned way, no 3D printing or computer software, I build and sculpt, then I make moulds, then I cast. If necessary there may be a 2nd mould made to improve casting after any adjustments have been made, but this is a rarity as I am an old hand at the process.
The funds will be used for the silicone to make the molds (the expensive bit) and also go towards the resin.
Postage. We will be shipping the set out as soon as the funds come in and the prices are set to the following 3 zones: UK, Europe & Rest of World. Prices are based on Royal Mail to calculate the cost.

It looks like quite a good way to get a large number of figures, all rather old-school and not at all expensive.

There is an early-bird add-on of a goblin pack-bearer, which I like the look of.
