Pets for the Not-So-Good Guys

62 posts in this topic

Let's say you are a Goblin; maybe a Goblin Wizard.  What kind of pet would you have?  I don't see a goblin wizard sitting at a desk with a cat on their lap (or any other typical human-centric pet), nor do I see them using a typical game related familiars.  I'd expect a goblin wizard to be into something a bit grittier, but I'm looking for ideas.

Of all the fantasy critters out there, what would you have?

That's a good question. It's gotta be something that couldn't double as food ( or else is nasty enough to protect itself from the other goblins ).

Spider or scorpion might work.

Imps would be good.

Maybe an undead something or other?

Snake?

There are some nice Reaper Familiar Sets.

For a Goblin I would choose:

sizes would vary on how powerful theI9 magic caster was

Evil intelligent goblin = Imps, minor demons, carrion birds, poisonous/aggressive lizards, constrictors, mixture of two animals (like a minor chimera = scorpion tail on weasel or something), elemental

Evil smarter than average goblin = scraggy animals, rats, bats, toads, frogs, small lizards/snakes, insects (scorpion wasp?), arachnids, stirge

Neutral goblins = aggressive fish type in bowl (Watched Mastermind, so piranha in a fishbowl is stuck in my head),

Good goblins = non-standard pet types =  boar, goat, ferret, badger, porcupine, donkey, small dragons

Good intelligent goblins = birds of prey, pack animals (they're stubborn enough to annoy the goblins hehe), elemental

If the familiar is meant for role playing, it's always fun to have opposite alignment for the characters. Good aligned ending up with demons/imps, evil aligned ending up with flumphs or something. The good aligned characters would have to learn how to negotiate/bargain/word their commands without the familiar causing too much trouble. Maybe the familiar becomes more submissive/pleased with their summoner through the actions or power levels gained. Evil aligned learn that while they have their familiar, their magic powers are 10 fold and attempt to keep some semblance of alignment with them. Perhaps, dismissing them if they needed to cause wanton destruction or pillage villages. Great, I'm picturing a goblin chasing a flumph trying to whack it on the head because the flumph raised a building instead of razing it.

A feral pig named Bacon.

Bacon defends himself. Bacon has big tusks and a fuzzy ridge. Bacon makes neat grunty sounds. Can't eat Bacon, Bacon finds good mushrooms and helps eat pesky adventurers.

Reminds me of the pig in the animated flick "Pets" Tattoos due to being a "test subject" for aspiring tattoo artists.

For the We be Goblins pregens, at ReaperCon this year, I'm debating on changing out the druid's animal companion to a goat for some reason. As of right now, he is of the swamp archetype & he has a frog familiar (part of the archetype changes).

Many of todays pets were used as food earlier...

And people are even keeping pigs as pets today.

Great ideas everyone.  I'm liking the thought of an imp, and Bacon the boar could be very interesting.  Even though he is food, I like the back story that he defends himself.

I think the obvious choice would be a toad. Up to you whether it was always a toad.

I also think I'm going to be buying some familiar packs.

What is the thing on the far left of Familiar pack II?   https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/familiar/sku-down/14087

Is that a baby treant?

Yes, or more like a stump-ant.

Dress it up, slap some make-up on it, and it could be a strump-ant!
