Vera funny.  More specifically highlighting and shadowing those big flat areas.  And doing cockpits.

You may want to check out my WIP.  You may get some stuff out of that will help with those questions.  Someone already mentioned something about doing cockpits in that thread.

Just describe a CAV in fantasy terms.  At a basic level, painting a CAV is like painting a golem.  Cockpits are like a big eyeball, the same idea as dots of light and reflective lines on an beholder main eye.  Camo is like animal stripes, for example try thinking of it like tiger stripes.

I'm reposting a bit I wrote up about cockpits that might be of some help...

Cockpit Canopy
A question that is commonly asked (mainly by those painting CAV minis) is what color should the cockpit/canopy glass on a CAV be colored?

The cockpits of the future are made up of ballistic glass using layers of polycarbonate materials designed to stop the penetration of kinetic weapons and dispersing the focused beam of any energy weapon. Incorporating “smart” glass technology, a layer of polymer dispersed liquid crystals are also placed within this layering t...hat can change its reflective properties by the use of applied voltage to “rearrange” the crystals into the desired result.

Typical configurations include:
Transparent (allowing people to see both ways, inside and out).
“Blackout” producing a matte black finish, blocking anyone from the outside to “see” through the cockpit glass.
Reflective, especially useful for removing unwanted thermal heat on planets with intense solar activity.

There's at least one article in The Craft.  But the point I'm making is stop worrying about it and paint the suckers.  You'll learn along the way.

Not so much worried.  Just have to get around to it.  Once I get my desk cleared off the rest of the way, my wife may come out and start painting with me, so I'll hopefully be spending more time at it.

The science behind it is all CAVs have a nano coating that can be changed at will so they can have camo that matches the environment or parade colors. It's not good enough to be considered cloaking but it does make them harder to see.

So I've thought a lot about this, and it's shaping my ideas of what base colors I want on a battlemat for the table.  I've seen a lot of earth-green layouts, but I've been painting my hills a more neutral slate-grey with brown and red overtones.

What are other people doing for terrain colors besides the standard earth tones?

I've tried matching US/coalition tans from the 21st century for my Legion and then added sparse "teal/turquoise" highlights.  After four different tans, I found that Vallejo's Iraqi Sand is the best match at this scale.

Mastergunz did Terran unit (3rd Legion, The Home Guard) in a dark blue with brown accent and black/grey details (weapon barrels, missile ports etc.)  Those images are on Facebook.

@Savage Coyote I think he's asking about what colors to use in his terrain...?

@CarlZog I think a table done in rusty browns and reds could look really good. Sand can be many colors and I think you could get some really neat affects with Red/Orange/Yellow as your base colors. Then do something SUPER contrasting with the foliage - Turquoise???

You could also make the red/orange/yellow table a winter table and put white snow across it in various places? If you had rocks that poked through the surface that were basalt black with grey highlights that would look great.

If you are talking about Guindy's babies, they are more likely to eat the dingos.

      Hello All,

Newbie here I though Id share a project that I've been working on to use when we play Talon Games Combat assault vehicle (CAV) when being shown the game I wasn't sure about lying the metal figures on there side to show they are destroyed or just removing them from the table I wanted something to represent them on the table as obstacles for troops and vehicles.

So here it is as it stands

I took a metal unmade Cav  and positioned it on some putty added a few rocks and used the Oamaru to made a mould

after moulding I painted it up (not finished yet) but you get the idea

Well I finally got the project on the road heres my test pieces almost finished just needs the bases finished off

Started with an archer, raptor and Ronin Cavs with 2 ashigaru's missile vechiles

did a base coat of purple with a dry brush afterwards

then added camo scheme as per my other link with tester pieces of paper

      finished group

quite pleased with the result look decent from a distance on the table no unit symbols or markings will decide on these at a later date

      ############### ORIGINAL POST BELOW ########################

I come to the Reaper Forums from the Privateer Press forums. In my time there I got involved with a Secret Santa (SS) exchange where a group of people got together and agreed to paint and gift a model for a randomly selected member of the SS exchange.

In an effort to generate more community activity on the CAV forums I'm curious if there is any interest in a CAV-centric gift exchange? I haven't put together my thoughts on how to organize it yet but thought I'd see if their was enough interest to make it work.

I like CAV, I like the Reaper forums but the CAV sub-forums seem very, very quiet.

I'd honestly like to get to know more of you and what better way than to paint a mini for my CAV neighbor in the spirit of the season.

Reading the thread below gave me the idea to organize a friendly 'KitBash' competition. Something like... everyone chooses a CAV and converts it in some meaningful way. Competition runs for a calendar month. We post a before and after image and then @CAVBOSS picks the winner(s).

Just something fun to do really...

Any interest...? Now that the CAV Secret Santa is winding down I'd be happy to manage the little bit of 'admin' the contest would require.
