Getting to Know You, Jan 2018

I am sure many are contemplating Resolutions for the New Year. This is great, however, before I get to the usual questions on what are people's resolutions, I want to do something a bit different.

Many improvement specialist's recommend visualizing your 'ideal state'. By visualizing where we want to go, we not only start to make it real in our minds, and create a direction for ourselves. Usually the person would draw their 'ideal state'. I am ok with people describing it here in text, but if people would like to draw it (or get even more creative) I highly encourage it!

The 'Ideal State' is vague on purpose. This could be "What I want to be when I grow up." or "What do I want my life to look like in 5/10 years", or Hobby related "What would I like to accomplish with my hobbies".

January 2nd

What is your 'Ideal State'?

Please provide a drawing or a description of the visual image of what that ideal state would look like.

Epic Level Bonus: Create Diorama of your Ideal State using your minis and mini supplies.

(Given that many of us have a lot of fantasy minis, it could be either a fantasy allegory to your goals, or just your ideal state but set in a fantasy setting.)

(I will post my diorama a bit later, but I can't wait to see what other people come up with.)

My ideal state is to to be in a place where I'm surrounded by friends and we all do fun and silly things.

Oh wait, I'm there now. ^_^::P::winkthumbs::bday:

I did a similar "life plan" process that I found online a year or so ago. I started with describing my stresses, writing out my thoughts until finding the root of each stress, and then how I would fix each one.

I wrote out my ideal typical day, which involved art, my husband, plants, and pets. ^_^ It's something that I know we can work towards together.

Mentally though, my ideal state would just be emotional stability. I could achieve my ideal state so much faster if I wasn't fighting myself all the time.

My ideal would be waking up refreshed every morning after 9-10 hours of unbroken sleep, and find myself with no pain.  I can handle anything after that.  Otherwise, I'm satisfied with a home, a loving husband, good friends, no debts, furry friends, and more minis than I can paint in my lifetime.

Yes!!! <3

Something similar to the pic only not quite so austere and definitely within the contiguous United States.  (according to the website I pulled the picture from, the castle is French.)

(Post pictures, or links to Show Off/WIP threads.)

There were a lot of bad things caused by a cascade of things not dealt with due to mental health.  I began taking those steps last year, and that is a good memory.  Having deep and honest conversations with my sons was amazing.  Even being unemployed, having time and actually having memories of things with my children this year has been amazing (mental health, it's a good thing).

Hobby-wise, I've started painting minis as part of building a portfolio and, frighteningly enough, my parents have assisted as they obtained a compressor for me (I now have all components I need for my airbrush!).  So, I get to start new-skill building, and I have been able to enjoy painting things I would not have otherwise painted (Legion of Everblight, which is an absolute joy, by the way).

Honestly, despite all of its failings, I would choose Federation Earth from Star Trek post the Dominion Wars.  I think that I could find things to do and enjoy my curiosity, and I'd never have to wear a red shirt (I'd be a science officer or a diplomat... somewhere not near Cardassia or the Dominion).

I am having a hard time deciding if I would like to be fully self employed, and be totally in control of my hours, but only get paid when I work. Or continued to be employed. The risk of the being self employed is that I get really into the projects and I end up working too much, and I end up neglecting my hobbies. (Or I need to spend more time securing and negotiating new work than I would like.) Or I end up wasting more time being leisurely getting to work, without gaining more time for hobbies.

However, whether or not I am self employed, I want to continue the work I am doing on mortality, and further my expertise in the subject.

In this picture I am protecting innocent lives from the ravages of death. Which in many ways, makes a 'nice' visual of my Ideal State. ::D:

Hobby Related Bonus: What is the hobby/craft thing you are the happiest with from last year?

(Post pictures, or links to Show Off/WIP threads.)

I know I'm late but I wanted to at least answer the bonus question.

I'm not sure what my happiest memory of 2017 was.  I'm having a hard time focusing on happy.  I know I'm skating close to stress-related burnout and that always takes its toll on my mental well-being.

I got to go on an actual vacation where work didn't bother me too much.  I saw totality in the year's solar eclipse.  My wife and I finally got to see the Cirque du Soleil show Ovo.  My wife and I finally got to celebrate an anniversary without calamity.  (Well, fine, it was only our second anniversary, but still.)  But I don't know which of these were my happiest memory -- or if another memory was my happiest.

The hobby thing I'm happiest with from last year was getting over my anxiety and joining these forums.  I almost didn't join because I didn't want to seem like a fool to people whose work I admire and respect.  But... here we are.  This is a wonderful, supportive community and I've learned much (and not all of it painting- or mini-related).  So, to everyone, thank you.

Several, but one was actually mustering up courage and asking a girl out for a date, followed up by several more. Unfortunately, we did not mesh. After several years of moping and attempting to regain my confidence, I'm sure I'm heading in the right direction.

Hobby related, I was happy with the free hand I did on my pirate. See Steig in my signature. ^.^

Well, I already took some steps and got my PhD applications in, and have been in good communication with professors at my top 3 schools - and things are looking up for the first pick.

I need to renew my passport. So yeah, that's on the list. Even if I don't end up in another country for school, I want to travel more, so I need that done.

And uhh..... try to be awesome a lot?

Bonus:

Work on doing bases.

Figure out how to squeak in a little painting time even if I am stressing. Lately I could have painted, but have tweaked hard enough to prevent me from sitting down to do so.

Keep trying to be awesome?

You don't get to be awesome without practicing. Therefore, I am going to practice being awesome.

I've been arting every day and been brave enough to post them, even the awful practice stuff.

I made a list of things that help me derail bad spirals, now just to get the energy to use them....

.... 2 steps is enough for now.

1) Pick up brush

2) Put brush in paint

3) Apply paint to mini

Whether it's being where I want to be or advancing my hobbying, the answers are the same for both.

In life/destressing? I'm pretty sure killing people is illegal :ph34r:SooooI'll just answer it as the bonus.

  1. Finished
  2. Not
  3. Perfect

How to type this without sounding emo. My brain at times causes me to think about my future and when I perish. Most of the time, it's just worrying that I would die unloved (romantically speaking). I have my family and friends, but would greatly appreciate having a partner in my life that would experience it with me. :)

Does anyone else feel like Thes is trying to trick us into doing like, self help stuff?

Let's see, most of my stuff is making myself healthy. So:

1: get off my tush and exercise

2: keep exercising, even when I feel sore

3: don't stop exercising because watching tv is easier.

For hobbying:

1: paint

2: keep painting

3: don't stop painting

And yes, those are serious answers. Most of me not doing things is just pure laziness. I just need to DO THE THING!

Yup. When I was coherent enough to plan questions, I was going for one-two sad-happy punches instead. Thes is far more beneficial :poke:
