Vacaroja's New Year's Resolution

Recommended Posts

My New Year's Resolution is a 2-part thing.  First, no buying of minis. . . .until August.  Because I know I won't be able to stop myself when we Gen Con this year.  And second, paint these -

Not my whole collection, but the ones I'm really interested in right now.  Some are to be conversions.  And some are going to be in a diorama I'd like to bring to Gen Con if I can complete it in time.

Gathering it all together now, I think I just intimidated myself.  Eep!

Now work out a schedule for how long you're going to spend on each piece, and then put everything back but the pieces you're currently working on. Assembly-lining several similar pieces at the same time (all minis of a certain type, or all pieces that are going to be using a certain color, etc.) will make the work much quicker.

No, but sometimes she wants to be involved in my hobby too and rearranges my paint and brush locations with her body or tries painting herself by stepping all over my paint palette and leaving colorful paw prints around the room.  So I created a very effective cat trap.  If it fits, it sits!

I know myself well enough that doing several at once would be my downfall.  Too much to focus on and I'll just stare and obsess.  2, maybe 3, at a time.  At least when it comes to painting.  You can see, I started the 3-stage shaman.  I started those 2 months ago.  I look at them occasionally, thinking I'll take a "break" and add more color to them, and then just end up going back to the big ol' dragon.  But I'm going to think positive and use this thread as a catalyst to help me obsess less, learn some new habits, get more technique in, and accomplish the goal.

With the big Ma'al Drakar completed, I'm moving on.  These guys are my first foray into human skin.  After doing a little research, I decided to try a certain technique.  And they're currently in three different stages of it, the left being complete.

For those who don't know, these are old Ral Parthas - 3 stage Witch Doctor: 01-338.

As I'm trying to decide what to paint next with the witch doctors getting close to finished, I pulled the Wizkids Dragonborn Paladins out of the package to inspect them.  A little disappointed with the amount of things that need cleaning up.  The many little hairs primed onto the mini bother me the most.  Trying to decide how serious I take them on.  Do I give them the love because I adore dragonborn or do a practice speed paint job because they're cheap.

Witch doctors complete.  Just wanted to show the difference in size between them and the next ones I'm working on.  Look at that giant dwarf!

Did a little conversion work this week.  Around Christmas, I finally hunted down some minis that properly represent my D&D group's characters that we've been playing since last year. (When we started I used some Dark Sword Antropomorphic Animals as character reps.)  But I needed to convert a couple to make them really work.

These are the originals - 03724: Thund Bloodwrack & 03389: Deckard Nightveil

Thund was a fairly easy conversion.  Flaming sword and shield added.  Shield is just tacked on, so its position will probably change once I finally get it secured.

Deckard was a bit of a different story.  The character is suppose to be a Dragonborn Cleric of Talos.  Removed the skull emblems and replaced them with a 3 lightning bolt symbol.  5aa1d7886aa4f_20180307_222934(640x361).jpg.dc6ce67e4e1387883a245e3c78abe2a6.jpg

I based the image off of Odin's horn designs.  They became 3 bolts encircling a center point because trying to make ones that intertwined was a little too complicated for me.  A little hard to read in the pic, but I think it'll look good once painted.

New face, new foot, and a new mace head finishes it off.  The face comes from the Dragonman Conversion Kit: 03457.

The skulls are from GW.  They came out with a box of nothing but skulls late last year.  So many skulls!  I admit, I only discovered them last month.  But got super excited because I'd been trying to figure out how I'd get the mace done without a lot of crafting. This is actually my first attempt at detailed green stuff work.

Anyway, I ended up buying the skulls.  The hubby tries to comfort me and says I didn't break my resolution because they were not minis but conversion tools.  I'm still conflicted.  He is, of course, now expectantly waiting for me to find something to stand on a mountain of skulls.

Thought it was a good update moment.  March into April was a very busy work month meaning I haven't been able to focus on painting until recently.  Here's what I've been able to get to in the last couple weeks.

5addeb9b43137_20180423_091154(800x572).jpg.4dae6256af561427ad0494b9299d47b1.jpg

The Wizkids Dragonborns were two different attempts at seeing what I could do under time limits.  The lower one was what I accomplished in an hour.  Very much need to work on how to speedpaint.  Will more than likely take the time to finish him off.  The other, in red, I did within a day.

As for the other four, I'm taking my time.  I've also found I love painting skin and faces.  I was a bit afraid to do it when I first started up.

And then there's this guy already posted in the Show Off forum -
