Stop Thief: Mousling Diorama

Recommended Posts

I adore this diorama! It is thoroughly cute and fabulous! The portrait of the wizard is wonderful! The detail on the wizard's glasses is fantastic.

Feedback? You are somewhat inconsistent with use of contrast. Look at the portrait of the wizard - lots of contrast in the face, and well distributed. The thief next to the portrait has a lot of contrast like that too. He has a ton of detail with contrast and color. The wizard himself however has less contrast, or not as distributed. The beard has black and white, but less contoured. The pointy hat is also low on contrast.

All much more nitpicky details, but you asked for some feedback so... tada! Truly, the diorama is awesome though. It is really enjoyable to see the storytelling detail you put into this.

i liked it already before i saw the backside... i was marveling at how brilliantly you froze a moment that captured the whole story

then i saw the back and the story got ever more delicious!

really nice work - a well deserved win!

I love the diorama, and especially the portrait. Wonderful job !

Thank you! The portrait was a gamble as I really suck when it comes to 2d painting. I really wanted to do it and so I cheated by painting over the black and white photo from the Reaper store. That gave me an idea of where to place the shadows and highlighting.

Thanks! I always like to add something to backside as an "easter egg" of sorts. Also I liked the idea of the wizard catching the one thief but the other escapes with some loot.

The mouseling minis are a great addition to any collection and this diorama is full of character

Thank you. Yeah, the mouslings are awesome. I wasn't sure about them at first but after painting my first one, I fell in love.

I got a camera to take better pictures of some of the miniatures I've been painting. I hope my GM can use them!

Following the conclusion of Storm King's Thunder, our group has started The Curse of Strahd, and I decided to play a thief. Going through my collection of minis, the River Widow mini from ReaperCon called out to me. As usual, after cleaning the few bits of flash and mold lines, I paused... How did I want to base her. I've made extensive use of the Ruined Temple Courtyard stamp from Happy Seppuku... but for this game I decided that I was going to use the Fishscale brick pattern which I'd picked up during their Black Friday sale. I clipped the tab connecting her feet, leaving only 2 spikes from each foot to anchor her into the greenstuff.

Once the greenstuff had cured, I glued her in place, and after waiting for the superglue to dry, I primed her with Reaper's Brown Liner. I then immediately tackled her eyes, trying to mirror what Derek did on his.  Seriously check this out, it's amazing...

So... I didn't quite achieve this, but it's probably the closest I've ever managed. Also I don't have a camera (or the skill) to capture a pic of this quality.

I basecoated her flesh with Ruddy Flesh, and then used Tanned Shadow on top of that. The bodice is based with Rich Indigo with Burgundy Wine over it. Her hair and lips are Auburn Shadow.

So far, so good, but I've got a lot more work to go.

Among my first finished minis of 2019 (finished in, some started...well, this century), a lot didn't fit into any category.  Here's the random ones.

      The Ladies (mostly Reaper)

      60036: Visbaronetess Delour Aulamaxa

03845: Mina Splinterheart - River Widows Captain

      07012: Dungeon Dwellers: Caerindra Thistlemoor

      03061: Anushka, Female Fighter

I now realize this is a Warmachine Pirate, not Reaper...but she snuck into the group shot already!

The Jason Wiebe tribute miniature, "Johann Rumbleguts".  I only noticed the missing part of the base in the photos...time for new glasses.

      50268: Bill Foster, Lumberjack

A very strange miniature, 02044: Cadwalon.  He's supposedly an ugly human but he's Halfling sized!

And trailing far behind with all the equipment for these weirdos, the simple Pack Mule

      Stuff I painted this year.

I decided to paint a few mouslings as Christmas presents for people.  For the most part I think they turned out decent.  The Santa was a little rushed so he's a little less detailed than I would have liked.  And yes, I did get the basing idea for Asiago Jones from a diorama at Reaper Con.

It was also my first time playing around with basing.  I'm having a hard time with putting on a second layer of basing materials, like the snow over the grass on the Santa.  Maybe I didn't wait long enough between layers but trying to spread glue on the grass ended up just pulling up a bunch of the grass.  So suggestions and thoughts are welcome.
