Fade Wood Nymph - an ub3r WIP

Recommended Posts

I’ve been in a rut for the last few months not producing or working on anything. Partly too busy over the holidays and partly feeling uninspired. I want to get back into it, so to that end I’m going to do something different and pretty and light-hearted.

I present “Fade” from Mirico. She’s a gorgeous bust with very striking details and a lot of room to interpret artistically. I hope you all enjoy the WIP while you follow along and please feel free to offer your comments and critiques!

She is lovely!  And I look forward to seeing you stretch your skills and try something fey.  ^_^

Thanks! I’ve got something special planned for the base/plinth as well. ::D:

Did you select this piece specifically to break out of your funk, or have you done some others to get the juices flowing?  I've been lacking that umph for the last few weeks and have been looking for ways to get rolling again.

A very lovely sculpt, can't wait to see how you turn her into a barbarian fey. ;)

One of my favorites, can’t wait to see what you do with her!

Mine as well. Very different from

my normal stuff.

Awesome bust!

Any ideas yet?

Will she get a non human skintone for instance?

A few ideas percolating... non human skin tone. Green hair. Flowers growing in her hair and along her elbow.

The base will be scenic and help portray her story.

Yes, to break out of my funk and get the creative juices flowing again. Needed something “pretty” to paint is how I decided on her.

Nope, no barbarian for this delicate piece. Going very feminine and whimsical. ::):

I'm in the same funk. It might be related to having so much crap on my work table right now due to organizing & not cleaning up after last year's months before ReaperCon activities. I need to thou, I've been wanting to paint just I see that mess & go eh tomorrow.

Roger that.  I've done my share of cleaning over the past few weeks.

I like Uber's approach.  I'm going to just start something new; something thing pretty.

Nice! I saw a few of these as well. The bottom one was the one I was looking at very closely and which I was most inspired by.

I like to spend a night to clean up everything before I start a new project. It helps me not get distracted or overwhelmed by the other stuff.

Primed with Stynylrez Green and then some highlights picked out with Stynylrez Yellow through my airbrush. Going to let it cure overnight and then start painting tomorrow. Will be using a lot of glazes and taking my time to get her to what I envision in my head.

Very nice sculpt, I'm looking forward to seeing how you umm... tackle her?

No need to tackle, she's delicate and I'm going to take my time and build up the layers with glazes to try to get a very smooth paintjob on her.

I'm trying to decide on how to do the base right now, I have an image in my mind and it comes down to trying to execute what I see there.

      Time to paint another bust.
This one is from El Greco 1:12th scale and comes in a nice tin.

A depiction of a seasoned Crusader.
I will paint him as a Knight Hospitaller instead of the often seen Knight Templars.

This means mine will have a Black Cape, A Red Surcoat and a White Cross.

This is an awesome sculpted bust by Creepytables Miniatures.
I painted her in a DIas de Muertos style with a Diamond Back Rattlesnake.
Did the skulls on the plinth as sugarskulls/luchador style skulls

So, I'm back. And I decided I needed to paint lots of skin. Recently watched the painting DVDs from Dark Sword, specifically the Marike ones. So I'm going to be trying to practice glazing.

Note: I know this bust won't be perfect. But this is me attempting to improve, so all advice and comments are appreciated!

Moving on, here is the bust in question, the beautiful maiden bust from Reapercon 2018.

And here is my progress this far:

So, I wanted to post this because it is relevant to the blending I'm doing. This is from the class I took from @Corporea last reapercon, with some blending with glazes attempted.

I hadn't got this right at the con, and would love for that progress to be checked on here! I'm going for high contrast, but not as high as here, so I thought this would be a better way to get some judgement on blending.

I seem to be losing a lot of contrast in the process, and would like some advice on what I might be doing wrong.

Some pretty good deals in the early bird specials:
      https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/399883540/orc-warband-collectors-by-yedharo-and-gt-studio-cr

Offering 30mm, 70mm, Busts and 1/10 () Scale figures.  Something for everyone!

I got the early bird 4 bust deal.  FWIW I have some of their earlier figures and they've been very good quality.

Okay, so I may never go back to painting 30 mm...! JK, but I did seriously enjoy painting this bust. It's my first, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

It's Joaquin Palacios' "Drogor" and it was also my first attempt at using the airbrush. I used it to do a shaded basecoat, and then brushed the rest using a combination of Vallejo, Master Series, and Golden acrylic paints. I wanted a strong directional light source, and I think I achieved it fairly well (comments and tips are much appreciated.) Given my 2D painting background, I use glazes pretty heavily, as you can probably tell.

Anyone know of a domestic source for nice wood bases? I've ordered a few from Sockelmacher, but they will take sooo looong to get here. This is just a chunk of balsa I used to paint on and he needs something nicer.

      Happy painting!
      Laura
