The first miniature I painted was a space marine that is LONG gone painted with horrible craft acrylics.

2/17:

Best miniature is so subjective.  To date?  I'm not sure anymore.  I'm thinking Abyzarran from a couple years ago, but I've improved since then and I've got an amazing PP shredder I did recently that I'm very proud of the basing, the top, the model, everything.  Jury's out.

2/18:

Amusement mostly.  I paint to enjoy myself and the games I play.  I enter the state known as "Flow" when I paint, and the world ceases to exist for a while.  While in that state, I am content in ways I cannot describe, it is a self-created drug of a sort.  No wonder I want to paint and do artistic things.

First mini ever was a Skeleton from a...Grenadier? set. No pics, but I do still have it.

Earliest mini I have a picture of was also the first Reaper mini I ever bought, Olley's Nord Kegbreaker. You can find the photos through the Show Off Index in my sig (I'm on my phone, linking is hard).

Best is objectively the Dark Sword Frog Jester I painted for my mom a few years ago... He won silver at Reapercon. But I also feel really good about the Not-a-Hobbit I painted not too long ago from Victoria Miniatures. Both show off threads are in the index, and the WiP for the Hobbit is also linked in my sig.

I paint mostly for games, now... But I also love the activity rather a lot, and when I have time to just come out with a mini, a paintbrush and some tea... Well, that's a good day.

Got an unfinished Teclis in the thinkaboutit box. Haven't had the courage to dig him out and finish him.

Yet.

I don't remember how long ago I painted him. At least 15 years. There was a how to paint him article in a White Dwarf and I just did it step by step exactly how they explained it.

That would be the Ral Partha (now Iron Winds) Evoker.

When I started, I had less than two dozen paints and inks, lousy brushes, no knowledge aside from a Citadel Miniatures painting guide.

I have some good ones I'm proud of for different reasons, but I don't know if I have a "best" one yet.

I could probably go and say that my current favorite is the Bones Innkeeper because of the freehand I did on it (though some lines are way too large).

This is the same mini I took to the ophthalmologist to show just how small the miniature we paint are when considering

My main reason to paint is for gaming. And since I've always been artistically inclined in my hobbies, painting them to the best of my ability also came naturally.

I don't really paint to show off my skills, and I don't have my minis on display anywhere, but when I game, I like having a little avatar of myself nearby.

First miniature:  "Custom Cast 1975 -- Hobbits"  came in a blister pack of eight.  I got them in 1979.  I've lost one.  :(

I feel like this is my best miniature:

I paint to clear my mind.  If I didn't paint, I'd play computer games a lot.  I feel much more positive and productive after painting a miniature.  Oh yeah, I also paint miniatures to produce new and deadly beasts to kill the players in my D&D game.

My first miniatures were from the Battlemasters game in the early 90s IIRC.  Testors enamel and testors brushes that didn't have a very good point.  There is no shading or highlighting, but there was freehand.

I'm not sure what my best is, but I've probably given it away in an exchange.

I started painting for gaming, but now I just paint to paint.  Recently though its mostly been prepping figures and little painting.

First ever mini I painted was a goblin...I forget the maker, but it was an atrocity.
Proudest mini ever...I'm trying to figure one I'm really proud of since I'm pretty elfing critical of my work
Why do I paint? Cause I don't look good in orange and the coffee in prison sucks.

17: Not sure if I have a "best" miniature. Some that I'm proud of include my Burrowing Horror, my Minotaur Demon Lord, and my current W.I.P. (which is my first commissioned piece).

18: I paint because it's relaxing and It allows me to hobby around in between d&d sessions with my friends.

First miniature was an Asgard Miniatures Dwarf Lord (DA3) I bought almost 35 years ago.  I have him around here somewhere . . .

I've painted too many pieces to keep track of a "best" miniature anymore.  Suffice to say, I improve with every mini I paint.

Partly for money.  Partly to relax.  Partly as a creative outlet.

2/16 The first miniatures I painted were little green army men with Testors enamel paints. Can't remember exactly when- I gave it a go when I was in 5th or 6th grade and set them aside til I was in the 8th grade.  That year I saw some Grenadier boxed sets at a local toy store and got them.  Let's see if I can find a pic of the first one I got...
Painted them up and repainted some of them several times before finally selling the majority to a high school friend in the early 2000's.  I'll have to get pic's of them to post up one of these days.
2/17 Cadwallon 10000 Paces Jailor is the latest piece I'm most proud. Once again I need to take pics.
2/18 I paint because I have to create.  Or at least think about creating, something :;):
The Golden Quest continues...

Ah ha!  I bought that kneeling female magic user as a single figure sometime back in the 80's and have been trying to figure out where she came from ever since.

I started painting because the figures were cool, paint was cheap (~.35, I could afford that as a teenager) and I liked doing creative stuff.  Later I found that the extreme focus required helped me get through some unpleasant situations where I might have resorted to self harm instead.  Now I am back to painting because I enjoy it, and I have an awesome group that uses figures when we game.

First big miniature purchase was Rogan from Ral Partha, from Dark Horse Games in Boise ID. My grandmother helped me buy it as I was short of cash but really wanted it ::):

(Not mine but from Lost Minis wiki)

RP-10-212-scan.jpg

First mini ever was this one:

RP Chaos Wars warlord:

RP-10-414i.jpg

Lord Nimrod

He was bought in a drug store where certain minis are turned into "pewtah collectahbulls" by adding fake gems & such to various places. His was on his belt buckle. (Yah I know, he has no buckle.........). I'm not sure if I still have him or not. I'll look at my shelves & post if I do still have him.

Best mini?

Hmmm I'm not sure I have one. I guess I could say the last one I finished. As much as I don't paint as I'd like to, any minis that I finished are a plus these days.

Why do I paint?

Well in the beginning, it was cause I wanted to get into the hobby. We played D&D & I always thought the miniature aspect of the game was pretty neat. Eventually I started to acquire various minis mainly Ral Partha & occasionally Citadel. Along with RP paints & few Citadel paints, away I went. These days I think I love the figures more then I do painting. Being able to go to ReaperCon the last 13 years & being able to meet & become friends with the various sculptors has been a very rewarding experience. As far as painting I like seeing how a raw metal figure that small can turn into something so colorful & lifelike. Hey, it beats collecting cars!! Cheaper too!!

I’ve played with toy soldiers longer than I can remember.  In my mind’s eye, it has always looked something like this:

Nowadays, by painting and stage setting, it mostly does. :poke:

Here’s a table view from that game. Immersion is easier when you stay focussed on the closeup view.

By the way, here’s the picture for the 16th, of my oldest Marx Viking serving as a Frostgrave statue:
