Chaoswolf 87848 Report post Posted April 16 R Lee Ermey, the foul mouthed drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket, died yesterday of complications from pneumonia. His role in in FMJ was one of the very rare instances where director Stanley Kubrick allowed an actor to improvise dialogue.

The best Directors have long ago recognized that sometimes the best direction is to let the actor go with their gut feelings. GEM
malefactus 28760 Report post Posted April 17 I remember him for his series Mail Call. He was a lovable old loony in the series; a far cry from the sadistic drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket. You have earned your rest Old Warrior.
SamuraiJack 15252 Report post Posted April 17 'complications from pneumonia' usually means Sepsis.. and I wish they would say 'Sepsis as a result of pneumonia'. Its what killed Patty duke and its what nearly killed me 2 years ago.. 'Complications from Pneumonia' isn't really helpful for Sepsis awareness. *steps off soapbox* I keep watching FMJ videos.. I can't believe he didn't win more awards for that

paintybeard 2080 Report post Posted April 17 Regularly re-watch FMJ, but usually stop after the first half. Everything after Mr Ermey seems so tame.
