Getting to Know You, May 2018

May 14: What is your favorite way to relieve or temporarily escape stress?

Listening to music, with or without a small glass of single malt. Also, imagining and sometimes writing encounters for 5e.

I find that most of my stress these days comes from organization/scheduling and other highly-structured tasks. As a result, I find the greatest relief doing creative, less structured activities.

Several! I have a couple of Studio McVey limited edition resins that I am still working up the courage to begin. And I have a copy of Joek Minis' "The Dragon Hunter" that looks so fragile that I'm scared to even take it out of the box!

Just got http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Telephone/sku-down/80037 and planning to gift it in September to my wife, but the coming detailing (writing!) are keeping me from starting. Having finished all of 1 mini at this point.

Some of those delicate darksword minis, with their teensy tiny eyes.

I'm on my second copy of Tom Meier's Swan Boat (a flying boat with swan parts and an elf princess), having sold the first one because it was too intimidating.  All the white...

Finding a quiet spot to sit with my eyes closed for a while works best for me.

Not really, I take the 'just get on with it' approach to painting minis.

But I do have a trio of Eldar figures who are waiting for me to figure out how to paint gems, they're covered in bajillions of them!

ALL of them. I usually need to work up the nerve to paint the ones i purchased because they were aesthetically pleasing.

I have a small collection of busts and large scale minis, every time I start one I'm terrified to ruin it.

So far so good I guess.

Especially the Roman Centurion bust and the 75mm mounted Celt  gives me the creeps and I still haven't found the nerve to paint those.

Yes, there are quite a few. No, more than that. More. More.

I'm supposed to be trying to work through at least 1 or 2 of them in an effort to kill the 'I'm not good enough' beast, but it hasn't been going too well so far. But, I'm back in the saddle, so there's still hope!

There are a few minis that I have sitting in The Vault that I love/admire AND haven't touched. They are all highly detailed creations. I'm not really afraid to do them; it is more looking at all that fiddly stuff & thinking that "this will be a REAL drag". Being turned off by what attracted me is, I am sure, some form of mental illness.

For me, its probably Kaladrax that stands out the most, though to be fair there are a number of models that are on my "Ehhh, a little more experience first would be good" list.

Huh usually I put one of these up sooner than this. Just been busy I guess.
      Who's all going?
How did you fair in the hotel lottery?

       So Sunday was event registration.
Did you get into the events you wanted?

My group did fairly well at the hotel thing this year even though we had to split the group this year. both hotels are fairly close.
I got into most of the events I wanted. had some issues with the priority system preventing me from getting into events because it conflicted with another event that I would only be going to if I hadn't gotten into an earlier time. Yet some how it did allow me to sign up for 2 Speed paints that conflicted with other events that I got into. (and I only realized one before paying)
Also I just a bit ago remembered that I wanted to do a Frostgrave event but they are all sold out already.

Blame @Bathory for the thread title and unofficial goal for this month...

If you're like me, you've got a bunch of unfinished projects collecting dust. Rather than start something new, why not finish something old?

      My goals:
Finish stone giant and these guys

I was at the 2018 Adepticon in Schaumburg, Illinois last month helping out at the Reaper Paint & Take tables.

I took pictures of the stupendous international Crystal Brush competition entries and other minis and terrain with an eye towards the interests of the people on this forum. Also some fun cosplay and miscellaneous interest.

I can't guarantee my photographs are great. I was using two cameras with very different capabilities and strengths and I am not a professional photographer. Some of the pictures use a very harsh flash because it allowed for super sharp enlargements of detail, something I thought painters here would be interested in.

I didn't know which entries would win the Crystal Brush competition, and as it turns out I missed the third-place winner. I have got pictures of the first and second place winners.

So to begin with, here is this year's first place entry, "Apocalypse", a diorama by Michal Pisarski.

And this is the second place winner, "The Name of the Wind", a diorama by Sergio Calvo. My pictures of this are not so good, I'm afraid.

      The roolz:

      The obligatory rules posting:

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question.
1.5. If I fail to post a question, Inara (possibly) will post a question of her own choice.
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted between 6AM and 8AM EST
3.5 (Rule 3 may be the 2nd most broken rule.)
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to me.
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why are always fun).
      7. Weekend questions may take the form of two or three day challenges, often starting on Fridays.
