Getting to Know You, June 2018

Recommended Posts

So I tried the online Spirit Animal thing.

Spoiler

You‘re The Deer

Deer Spirit Animal

What It Means To Be The Deer

When you have the deer as spirit animal, you are highly sensitive and have a strong intuition. By affinity with this animal, you have the power to deal with challenges with grace. You master the art of being both determined and gentle in your approach.

The deer totem wisdom imparts those with a special connection with this animal with the ability to be vigilant, move quickly, and trust their instincts to get out the trickiest situations.

I'm a bear. Rawwwr.

Not due to some quiz or something, this is a thing that dates back 25 years. I still have some of my bear fetishes from my teenage years. I do best in life when I eat a bear-like diet (fish, nuts, honey, fruits, green things, the occasional deer carcass).

Now I even have a job that gets me time off on furlough every year (I hope) so I can have my 3 months of sleeping in.

I took that test and it said I'm the Veydra master pack of lenses, and/or the 12 and 16mm cine lenses.  Oh wait, that was the ad.

Apparently horse.  According to them.

I once worked with a guy who was big into astrology.  After the first hour of talking with him the day we met, he says to me "You're a fire sign.  What month were you born".  I didn't know what the elf he was talking about.  I was born in August, which I knew was a Leo, but that is about it.  His only reply was "I thought so" and basically left it at that.  I later Googled the topic and he was right, so he either stalked me online, or I am somewhat in tune with an archetypal Leo.

My Chinese zodiac sign is a Rat.   That's pretty fitting as well.

Lion it is, then... which is only fitting... unless I messed up one of those squirrely answers that could have given me Tiger!

At least it is a Big Cat!  But really... when Danger Shows Up?  And those are my ONLY options?  And for the Chakra section... am I going from color, design, what the actual chakra is?

Probably there was no Sabertooth Tiger on the list...

Took a quiz and got an owl. Then sat here, skeptically pondering the veracity of an online quiz in determining one's spirit animal...

Typical owl, suspicious of my own owl-ness...

Hoot.

According to that website, I am a lion-virgo-rat-wolf/raven-Celtic swan.

June 8: Are you in any clubs or organizations? Have you started any?

Thanks again, TGP!

Outside of small gaming groups, no.  I have attempted to start leagues for various miniatures games, then the companies stop supporting them (aka D&D miniatures right after Chainmail flopped).

June 9 and 10: What's your favorite way to treat yourself?

Are you thinking about doing that this weekend or soon?

Thanks, Crowley!

Ice Cream.  Painting time.  Yes to both.

Thanks, Xiwo Xerase!

I'm a big fan of Abyzarran, given I painted that dragon up.  I'm also a fan of their early dwarves and their entire Anhur/Breonne army pack group.

If you're gonna be a bear, be a Grisly Bear that can fly and swim to uncharted depths, burrowing through granite as well as ice and swimming through liquid Magma.  Nowhere is safe.

I know he's a (fictitious) sentient being, but can I pick Zathras?

June 13: Where do you find mini painting or general art inspiration?

A place, a show, a song?

I get it from a lot of sources, namely random ideas that pop into my head...

... As for inspiration to keep the flow going?  Usually mixes of some kind, sometimes favourite albums, but almost always something many would consider dark, and fast.  Mmmmmm, gabber makes painting so much fun, same with DnB (Drum N Bass).  Aesthetic Perfection has some absolutely awesome albums to paint to as well.

Huh usually I put one of these up sooner than this. Just been busy I guess.
      Who's all going?
How did you fair in the hotel lottery?

       So Sunday was event registration.
Did you get into the events you wanted?

My group did fairly well at the hotel thing this year even though we had to split the group this year. both hotels are fairly close.
I got into most of the events I wanted. had some issues with the priority system preventing me from getting into events because it conflicted with another event that I would only be going to if I hadn't gotten into an earlier time. Yet some how it did allow me to sign up for 2 Speed paints that conflicted with other events that I got into. (and I only realized one before paying)
Also I just a bit ago remembered that I wanted to do a Frostgrave event but they are all sold out already.

We're still going strong! Incredible. It's been a bit, so poke me if I ask a duplicate. I've missed y'all.

      The roolz:

      The obligatory rules posting:

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question.
1.5. If I fail to post a question, Inara (possibly) will post a question of her own choice.
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted between 6AM and 8AM EST
3.5 (Rule 3 may be the 2nd most broken rule.)
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to me.
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why are always fun).
      7. Weekend questions may take the form of two or three day challenges, often starting on Fridays.

I will be posting late the night before as I won't be awake super early in the morning.

Blame @Bathory for the thread title and unofficial goal for this month...

If you're like me, you've got a bunch of unfinished projects collecting dust. Rather than start something new, why not finish something old?

      My goals:
Finish stone giant and these guys

I was at the 2018 Adepticon in Schaumburg, Illinois last month helping out at the Reaper Paint & Take tables.

I took pictures of the stupendous international Crystal Brush competition entries and other minis and terrain with an eye towards the interests of the people on this forum. Also some fun cosplay and miscellaneous interest.

I can't guarantee my photographs are great. I was using two cameras with very different capabilities and strengths and I am not a professional photographer. Some of the pictures use a very harsh flash because it allowed for super sharp enlargements of detail, something I thought painters here would be interested in.

I didn't know which entries would win the Crystal Brush competition, and as it turns out I missed the third-place winner. I have got pictures of the first and second place winners.

So to begin with, here is this year's first place entry, "Apocalypse", a diorama by Michal Pisarski.

And this is the second place winner, "The Name of the Wind", a diorama by Sergio Calvo. My pictures of this are not so good, I'm afraid.
